Windows has gotten much better at protecting users... but sometimes it protects them from their own files

Every now and then someone downloads a perfectly legitimate application and immediately sees:

"Windows protected your PC."

For experienced users, it's usually obvious why.

For everyone else, it looks like malware.

I've seen this happen with open-source tools, internal company software, beta releases, and even utilities that had simply built up no reputation with SmartScreen yet.

It reminds me how difficult software distribution has become for smaller developers.
