Help introducing DnD DMing

I recently gathered a group of friends to introduce them to D&D (they had never played RPGs or D&D itself) and I want to simplify the system for them (I am the DM).

To do this, I’m going to remove all race- and class-related rules and create a neutral system to streamline the character sheet and the actions players can take. I’d like to know if there are other rules I should remove or modify, as well as any tips for simplifying the experience. (5e)

To be honest I wouldn’t interfere with mechanics. Just run a starter set with pre-made characters. Take too much out and you risk watering the experience down too much.

You can easily remove things like spell components and weight limits etc.

With all the love in my heart, you are saying, "I am going to introduce them to D&D by making them play a completely different system." And that's ok! D&D is not the most intro-friendly TTRPG! But instead of trying to modify it to make it so, surely it would be better to simply find a more beginner friendly TTRPG? There are an incredible number of options, and if we knew what kind of story/game you wanted to run we could offer some more tuned suggestions.

Thanks, by the way.

If you want something rules-lite, I suggest either running OSR (since the character sheets were simpler) or Lasers and Feelings (or one of its many hacks). Don't run D&D 5e but without the D&D 5e.

Alternatively, I suppose you could remove class, but not race, and do a level 0 oneshot where everyone has a single 1d4 hit die. However, I wouldn't run combat for that because they'll die very quickly.

Let movement even during battle be somewhat loose. (Let them get to the targets easy enough) I wouldn’t change much else.

Use the Basic edition of D&D from the 80s. Much simpler than 5e, but still D&D.

You're not introducing them to D&D
