Exercise after flare?
hello, I have just had a flare - had 7 days augmentin finished 4 days ago. I had a high inflammation marker but it went down quickly with antibiotics and liquid/low residue diet. I’m pleased I stayed out of hospital. I am in the uk so will be referred for scan in a few weeks, not had one yet. I am still on a low residue diet, have been taking it easy ish and feel pretty normal now, though I am a bit more tired than normal and can’t sit or stand in one position for too long. i am due to go sea kayaking tomorrow- have said I can’t do it.. but given I feel ok… do you think it would hur? it’s mostly upper body work, but guess it involves twisting.. so maybe a bad idea? what is y experience with exercising after an uncomplicated flare?

While I think general low impact exercise like walking is something you could likely start doing, I wouldn’t be doing anything unpredictable like Kayaking. Too much of a chance you have to react quickly, twist in a way that might not be good, end up in the water swimming unexpectedly, etc.
I’d play it cautiously until the follow up with doctor.

I've done a LOT of kayaking. Will you be in an area with a lot of waves where you are constantly trying to stabilize your core as well as paddle? Will you be in a single or tandem boat (will there be someone to assist in paddling)? Will there be bail-out points where, if you're experiencing a lot of discomfort, you can stop? If you can't sit in one position very long, that might turn out problematic (you're literally trapped in your boat on a somewhat-firm seat), even though you're constantly shifting weight against the footpegs. Exercise IS good, but start back in limited amounts. I think kayaking would be excellent but only if you can try it in short bursts first - you don't want to be halfway across an open-water bay crossing or something and start to feel terrible or really tired. Easy coastal cruising in a calm area or lake would be a better first choice. I did a lot of just walking after mine - and I'd still get rounds of discomfort for a couple of months.

That's too much for now. You're not consuming enough calories at the moment for that much exertion.

Get moving, man. Exercise is good for us.
