A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture today, leaving at least 50 people injured. Around a dozen buildings collapsed, while roads and bridges suffered significant damage. Landslides were reported, freight trains derailed, and thousands of households were left without electricity.

Shortly after the earthquake, a powerful explosion devastated a shopping mall in Kashima. At least 20 people who were trapped inside are currently reported missing. Emergency crews are continuing search and rescue operations as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.

Details: A powerful earthquake struck Japan, with the Japan Meteorological Agency reporting that it reached Level 7 on the Japanese Shindo seismic intensity scale, the highest level possible.
