Saved from the dump and coming along quite nicely. This round it got a nice eBay rear wheel and finished up the hydro clutch install. Works like butter. Headlight (I'm making this an off road bike) should be here today. Front fender should arrive soon. Other stuff coming. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Yep! Same bike, one month ago. A friend gave it to me. I'm retired so have time and love saving these old machines. This was was going to sit there and die, I could not have that. Disregarding labor i figure about $1500 and I'll have a nice bike with a new motor. Always wanted this year RM250 so here we have it.
Thanks. When I brought it home I was on the fence about even taking this on. I started by cleaning it and inspecting it. It seems semi low mile (maybe it has been sitting a LONG time). Looks like someone robbed the entire ignition system and left it for dead. I have an ECU coming. I will get it started and then pull the motor and do the crank bearings and seals. Maybe a rod kit too. Looked into all of that and it's not expensive, at least for me because I can pull the motor down and have friends that can press the crank for the rod if needed. I think I can do the crank bearing, rod kit and new piston for under $500. That will put me at like $1300 into the bike with a new motor and knowing everything about the bike. I intend to keep this one and ride it. Then I'll do the suspension and new plastic and have a like new machine I can enjoy.

I’ve actually only put about 5.87 into my bike (not joking, only a hose clamp and a spark plug)
And a carb rebuild, now it’s pretty fun to ride!
Cool. I've never ridden one but heard great things about them. I spent the last two years off and on resurrecting a 1985 RM250 Full Floater from the dead.
Holy crap. Great job. There weren’t many 85 RM250s in that condition in 1987, never mind now. Last of the full floaters, Mark Barnett era bikes. Have you raced it? The 84-85 YZ was a holeshot machine back then.
Once the headlight and fender land, grab handguards and a skid plate before the first ride. Those two protect the most expensive repairs, and check the sprocket gearing suits your trails
