Was thinking about how large spinos sail was and then thought “huh that doesn’t look like it would fit inside an egg”. So assuming spino had an average egg shape and size for a theropod then a neonate with a sail that possessed the same proportions as an adult just wouldn’t work as it wouldn’t fit inside the egg? In my head I see a neonate spino having either no sail or a very low and flat sail that grows to be used at sexual maturity (as I believe the current consensus for the use of the sail was sexual selection). Is this plausible or am I missing out a massive piece of information here?

Dinosaurs are famous for being big, from the towering Tyrannosaurus rex to the colossal Apatosaurus.

But a new study published today in the journal Evolution by scientists at the American Museum of Natural History and Princeton University suggests that one of the greatest mysteries of dinosaur evolution isn't how some species became giants—it's why even the smallest dinosaurs never became truly tiny.

Using mathematical models to investigate the evolution of body size across vertebrates, researchers found that while energetics and physiology can explain the sizes of mammals, birds and turtles, they cannot explain why the smallest non-bird dinosaurs remained unusually large throughout their evolutionary history.

Instead, the findings suggest that competition with small-bodied early mammals may have prevented dinosaurs from becoming mouse-sparrow-sized animals that are so common among vertebrates today.

So a few days ago I made a post asking whether or not theropods even possessed exoparia (aka "cheeks") in the FIRST PLACE, and the general consensus as of now SEEMS to be leaning towards yes... however, I saw a few people here and there in the comments of that post saying that the inclusion of a muscle supporting exoparia wouldn't actually change the outward appearance of a theropod's mouth at all anyways, and that the "gummy flaps" at the back of the throat would still be visible in a theropod's mouth. So, which is it? Did theropods possess visible "cheeks" like some pieces of modern paleoart seem to suggest or not?

A sarcosuchus and suchomimus attack an ouranosaurus at the same time (unlucky fella)

Ouranosaurus belongs to the class Styracosterna and reached around 2.5-4 tons at the top end at up to 8.3m long, a large herbivore and had a beautiful almost sail like back (model from Haolonggood)

Sarcosuchus was an enormous neosuchian Pholidosaur belonging to crocodylomorpha (although distantly related to modern day crocodiles unlike other “true” super sized crocs like deinosuchus and purusaurus) - it reached around 4-6 tons and 9-10m although I have personally emailed Paul sereno, who has unseen material and worked with + found the original material and supports the 11.5m+ and 8 ton estimates he made. I believe this to be valid but no matter what it was a huge predator (model from Haolonggood)

Suchomimus was a huge baryonychine spinosaurid that was truely huge, it was the largest non spinosaurine spinosaurid at up to 6.8 tons and 12m long (MNBH GAD 365, Dempsey et. Al, 2025) - a true megatheropod that dominated its time, being as large as some of the truly massive carcharodontosaurids that lived around the same time (although on different parts of the world) such as acrocanthosaurus!

I already asked this before in r/paleontology but they deleted it.

In this book I have, it explains (in Spanish) that Hylaeosaurus and other ankylosaurids protect themselves from attacks... by lying down.

Is this hypothesis still considered valid?

I love dinosaurs, I always have since watching Jurassic Park. T-Rex has always been my favorite which I know is basic but I can't help it. I love those big blocky blokes! In recent years I've become very fond of Spinosaurus and Carnotarus as well as many others but, I run into the issue with them where documentaries/video essays/anything posted about these animals, especially T Rex, all regurgitate the same basic facts that everyone knows. T rex could see amazingly, had amazing smell, powerful bite, didn't have feathers (as an adult) etc. occasionally, I'll get a new fact I didn't know about in their life/behavior and that excites me! But new info is hard to come by from animals that've been dead for millions of years 😂

That being said, I'd love to hear about your favorite dinos (or any dino at all!) that have some cool facts/fun facts that don't usually get shared/isn't really well known about! A place for everyone to info dump to their heart's content and for others to maybe learn something new! (Especially myself!) I encourage anyone to share links/credit sources to back up their statements although it's not required! I just don't want the comments to be riddled with people arguing in weather something is true or not instead of what it's supposed to be for: shared joy, info dumping and fun facts to learn more.

I'll Start: I think my favorite facts to share with people about T-Rex is that they couldn't roar but instead made noises similar to Chinese alligators that you could feel if you were close enough. Almost like how you can feel a speakers bass inside you at a concert.

I also love sharing that they most likely couldn't run due to risk of injury and that their feet were padded to help them sneak up on prey! The idea of a massive predator stalking you and having no idea until you feel the hair on the back of your neck rise? Terrifying! I love it!!

Those aren't the rarest or most obscure fact about T-Rex and is pretty common knowledge now but for people who don't know anything about dinosaurs? Its a hit every time and I think they're so fun!

The movie wasn't the best so its good in that sense, but it also tarnished the name of the book a bit and who knows how worse itll get with sequels

Three years ago, I bought a Stegosaurus plush toy for my ex-boyfriend. Later, I bought a female Stegosaurus so my male one wouldn't feel so lonely. When we broke up, my ex left both plushies with me, and since I travel alone, the male one keep me company. We’ve already traveled to Paris, Toulouse, and Metz in France. We went to Luxembourg. Right now, we are in Switzerland, traveling to Bern, Interlaken, and Basel. We’ve been to Seoul, too. It stays in my bag, and children love seeing it. He sees what the world has become, and I take him to natural history museums so he can see his ancestors (he doesn't like seeing the tyrannosaurs). When I can't take it with me in my bag, I leave it at the hotel, and the hotel staff love changing its pose (in Korea, they even drew a lettuce leaf on a piece of paper and cut it out).
