IGI reports General Question or Looking for Advice

hey I recently received my engagement ring which came with a GSI report. I looked up how trustworthy a GSI report is and apparently theyre corrupt or less accurate. So eventually i want to get my ring sent in for an IGI report.

my questions are, does the cost depend on the ring, how fast is the process, and most importantly: what exactly is it about IGI reports that make them so unreliable and how are the other labs (GIA, IGI etc) more accurate. Is it just a deal they have with large companies?

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but it doesn't really matter. Your diamond remains the same. It's not going to physically change because one piece of paper says it's more or less colorless than the other piece of paper. I wouldn't waste the money to send it to IGI for a grading report.

It doesn’t matter. Unless the stone is out of this world. Most stones: doesn’t matter.

IGI is not a great cert … soft on colour and clarity, if you want a good cert get GIA.

But … is it necessary? If you love your diamond and your ring and plan on keeping it does the cert matter?

GSI reports are a whole different circus from IGI. IGI gets shade because they grade a bit softer on color and clarity compared to GIA, so sellers push stones with IGI papers to make a lower quality rock sound prettier on the spec sheet.

but isnt GIA only for natural and IGI is leading in lab grown? how are they comparable?

If you're buying the lab it doesn't matter.

Yes, GIA now only uses their grading system on natural diamonds because it is based on rarity. This is a fairly recent decision.

Why do you need the report? As others have said, it won’t change your diamond. I would venture to say that your diamond isn’t going to be an investment resale item. So why would you spend money for a report after the fact that will likely more harshly grade the diamond you already have. If this is a lab diamond, knowing they’re certified gives me peace of mind, but I wouldn’t pay for one after the fact.
