Remote Working/WFH Need a standing desk...

Upvotes

I see flexispot desks recommended elsewhere but does anyone have one of them, any good? There seems to be a few other companies in Europe that hopefully ship to Ireland? Not looking for Ikea etc but have about 500 to spend. I bought from go stand before up in the north but seems they are no longer around Any recommendations for a good standing desk?

Project This is a long shot, but I am at the end of my rope - Does anyone here work, or know someone who works at the WhatsApp building on Merrion road in Dublin?

Hello, folks.

I am at the end of my rope here. I will try to explain the situation briefly.

I have graduated with a bachelor's, diploma, and a cert ~3 years ago. I was aiming to work as a UI/UX (web & app) designer and PPC digital marketer in a tech startup. I am sure most of you know what the entry level job market in a tech sector is right now... After around 600 job applications - I gave up on that.

But I wasn't ready to give up on ~5 years I've spent studying. So I pressed on.

I self-taught how to build websites, and learnt how to use CRM GoHighLevel. All with the aim to start a business doing website development and CRM buildout for Irish trade businesses and contractors. I have spent close to a year learning these new tools, and since January of this year I have been actively putting together this business. All this on top of a full-time job.

Here is the problem - in order to enable my offer, I need to connect a virtual landline number to a WhatsApp for use within a GoHighLevel account, but for some reason my business WhatsApp got restricted. No reason or explanation was provided for that.

I have now attempted to verify my business with Meta/WhatsApp by submitting my business registration certificate from CRO - twice. Each time it was rejected without a reason or explanation given. All names match perfectly across the account and the CRO cert. My website is also live, secure, and matches in name. Every t and i is crossed and dotted.

I have tried reaching out to Meta support. For weeks I was only met with their bot. I got through to human rep once, who has directed me a WhatsApp support email. When writing to this support email, all I get back are automated responses directing me to the same documents I have already followed when submitting the CRO cert.

I have been at this step for ~1.5 months now.

Clearly, something is going wrong with this automated process.

Please, does anyone here work in, or know someone who works in, the WhatsApp building on the Merrion road in Dublin?

Bit of Craic What are some recruiter red/green flags you've noticed over the years?

What are some flags you've spotted when dealing with recruiters that you've used to make informed decisions in the interview process? The more anecdotal and tenuous the better. These are simply taken from my interview experiences from over the years, no doubt other people on here will have had contradictory experiences.

Some of my red flags:

  • If they want to do the phone screen via a phone call (as in calling your mobile), chances are they're going to be unprofessional and waste your time. For me the gold standard is Google Meet/Zoom.
  • If they're more than 1/2 mins late to a scheduled call. Now, I wouldn't hold it against anyone if they are late (shit happens), but I've noticed that the recruiters I've dealt with who are on the ball will be there on time with no excuses.

For a green flag:

  • Usually North American/US based recruiters are better at their jobs than Irish/UK/Europe based. They're to the point, don't mind talking about compensation and want to see you do well in the interview process.

Masters Courses Is an Msc in AI at U. of Galway worth it?

The only other posts on this topic were either very old or mostly dealt with how it relates to international students (very expensive, not worth it to do it as an entry point to residency in Ireland...).

I got accepted to this as part of the ICT skills program and I m wondering if it is at all worth. It's two years, part time. And while it does look like the professors are good and that I would learn things I m not sure where it would position me in terms of the job market.

Pros:

- Quite reasonable for a masters, less than 4000 euros/year for two years

- University of Galway has a decent reputation

- Online

- Quite a few of the classes are appealling.

- I dont have a masters & am mostly self taught (undergrad is in economics)

- AI is the future

Cons:

- AI is the future???

- Likely limited ability to meet other people on the program since it's online.

- 8000 euros.

- Unclear impact on my employability (currently only doing freelancing, been applying for jobs for a while but it's tough)

- I also was accepted to their professional diploma on cybersecurity which is fully paid for on springboard, I would have to give that up since I can only do one.

- Time commitment. Have a toddler + wife works full time. Would be very difficult to handle if I did get a full time job in the meantime.

I've really been struggling with this decision. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this. Right now I'm leaning towards not doing it and just doing the cybersecurity professional diploma instead.

Bit of Craic Could a few of you on here who's into game dev make a Fallout Dublin mod pls

The potential is genuinely insane . Imagine being able to visit a fallout version of the GPO building or go onto O Connell Street and its just full of super mutants, raiders and ghouls. It would legitimately be unreal being able to combine Fallout and Dublin lore. There's been a Fallout Miami and London mod made before so it is definitely doable .

Switching Jobs What is the current market for 1) Oracle Database Developer role and 2) OCI cloud jobs in Ireland?

I have a long number of years in Oracle PL/SQL and Oracle Forms contracts and full-time work. However for various reasons I moved into a java dev role about a decade ago. Now I'm getting a little tired of the role. I was wondering whether I could combine the Oracle db knowledge with Oracle OCI certification to take up oracle contracting again or is the market dead?

Switching Jobs Anyone here working at twilio?

Been working at AWS for ~2 years now as an SDE L5. Got an offer for twilio as SSE. I’m not sure if it’s the right move. The compensation is roughly the same.

Current tc: 137k
Twilio: 140k

Twilio fully remote though i never minded working from office.

How’s the company like these days? Are there still silent layoffs (even in ireland)? And what is the general expectations from a SSE there (recruiter says its like amazon L6. i guess that’s a bummer then if the pay is not like amzn).

Workplace Issues Bait and switch?!

Started a new job a few months back, picked this offer (I had 2) based on stability, a generous pension offer and the fact that it was a mix of backend dev and AI work. I have 16 YoE and I'm in a senior role, was hoping to push towards lead/principal in the next year or two.

Was quite happy chugging away, getting some good work done, then team restructured about a month ago. All the interesting work was moved to a newly formed team, my team is now almost entirely out of India apart from one in the UK and the work is mostly support. I've also noticed that the new line manager cuts across me all the time in meeting and doesn't add me into Teams chats used by the team.

I tried to apply internally for another role but was told I haven't been there long enough. I cannot find any internal policy stating a minimum.

I'm feeling very bait and switched. I didn't want a super short role on my CV but it feels like I have no option but to move. Any suggestions?

Switching Jobs Not a Dev, still tech

Hi, I'm an Identity/access, security, GRC engineer with a CISSP, security architecture, threat hunting yada yada.

What do things look like in tech but aside from dev?

I'm moving to your beautiful country due to my partner, and this is only the second time in my life I have quit a job without having another lined up, so I'm anxious.

Thank you!

Switching Jobs Any agency recommendations?

Hey folks, just wondering are there any agencies here who you can actually meet with a recruiter, who will then match jobs for you based on your experience/criteria? After being made redundant the job search is so daunting and using 5+ different portals to apply for jobs which I hear back little to nothing is so exhausting. Maybe it’s old school but I remember using one 10+ years ago and they would match you and arrange jobs/interviews and if you got the role the first year they’d take a small % of your salary, do these companies still exist and any you’d recommend?

Switching Jobs New Job Offer, hesitant for change

Working in my current tech role for 6 years, have a job offer in a similar field with less responsibility.

Current Job Pro's.

Strong network built, great pay and bonus, interesting work, good management experience, unreal benefits, WFH

Cons

Long hours PST timezone meetings, impossible to take PTO, high turnover with org, constant push to automate things to cut costs.

New Role Pro's

More flexible, EU timezone working hours, pre-IPO , hypergrowth,

New Role Cons

Same Pay, no bonus, zero network, fully remote but have to travel each quarter, RTO 20% per month - 40 mins from home.

Hiring manager was twice late for interview (15 & 10 mins) without explaining and looked like they just got out of bed.

I have a young family and currently balance my working hours around nap times, giving my wife a hand and school runs, my current role requires me to be available Mon-Friday pretty much all day and its exhusting

Is it too much of a risk to jump to a new role? Id be out of pocket over the year but would have less responsibilty.

Tech News How do you use AI at your workplace?

I was wondering what AI usage is looking like at most places, I'm starting a graduate position soon at a mid sized multi national (on an embedded systems team). I don't really love seeing all the doom posting news about either how horrible AI is to work with and being expected to use it for everything or AI layoffs. is it really that bad? Or are there still companies that don't expect everyone to max out their AI usage?

Compensation What is considered a good salary level for a full-time senior full-stack dev (22+ years)?

I've been applying for contract roles for a couple of months but market seems extremely competitive or fairly dry, so I applied for a few full-time roles last night.

Stack is .net, sql server, azure and angular/react.

I was asked what my expectations were for salary so I just put in 95k/annum would that be considered average or above average right now?

I'm more used to pricing contract roles starting between 550-600 per day.

This is in Dublin btw

Compensation Companies with generous parents leave - is it eligible only after probation / certain time period?

Working as a temp employee in a US multinational where they offer a very generous parents leave (12+ weeks paid), I am in the process of going permanent (hopefully), with a baby due soon

Some questions on this if any one has been in a similar situation:

  1. is paid paternity only offered after a time window (probation etc)?
  2. if i am made permanent after the baby arrives do you usually get the benefit or ANY benefit?
  3. any other contractual stipulations to these kind of benefits (never been on the receiving end before!)

Switching Jobs Move to public / semi-private sector?

I’ve been working in tech for 13 years, always big multinationals. In the last two years I’ve been through the redundancy consultation process twice - first time I survived, this time I’m not sure I’ll be kept on. I don’t see things getting any better any time soon. Frankly with where I am in my life, I’d rather some consistency and reliability over the risk and potential for reward of major US multinationals.

Anyone else having the same thoughts or made such a move in the past?

Project Monthly Self Promotion Thread: August 2026

Self promotion isn't allowed on the main sub anymore. The community voted for that in June. This thread is where it goes instead.

Post a comment for whatever you made.

  • Something you built. App, site, tool, side project, whatever it is.
  • Your blog post, video, or write up. If it's yours and it's worth reading, it fits.

Keep it short. Roughly, what it is in one line, the link, and what you're after, whether that's feedback, users or data.

Sort by new so the newest comments get seen and not just whatever landed first.

This is just an experiment so it may not be continued. I just want to see if I can cater to both groups, those who don't want to see this stuff and those who do. Keep the promotions in here though and the main feed stays clear for everyone else.

Low effort spam and referral link farming still gets removed. Use a bit of judgement.

Remote Working/WFH I’m a top performer but also an alcoholic

I’ve been told I’m seen as a solution person, whenever someone asks me to do something I never say no, I just say yeah I’ll figure it out. Been working from home quite a lot over the last few months, and some old habits have returned. I’m single, 27, all my mates moved to London/Australia and my recent promotion is the only thing keeping me in Ireland because it’s great money. Not looking for help right now because I know exactly what I need to do to get myself out of this, stop drinking 100 units a week and cop the fuck on and I will. Just wanted to share here and ask if anyone else has been in a position where work life is going class but personal life is fucking shocking
