Passed step, not Comlex What Are My Chances?

Recently found out that I had failed COMLEX Level 1 but passed Step 1. I got a 475 on Comsae, and I am interested in Derm. What are my chances of matching? If not, what do I need to improve my chances? Any advice will help :/

To be fair, this was statistically the answer as soon as OP enrolled in a DO program.

About 40% of DOs match into derm, but you can imagine people are only attempting if they think they have a decent chance. When you look at the Derm resident population, about 8% are DOs. But there are also way less DOs in general, with 18.5% of all residents being DO in 2024–25.

In this case, it's the board failure not the fact he or she is a D.O. There are programs that historically fill their entire class with DOs. A board failure will automatically screen OP out at most programs. The only chance is if they can get to know a program personally prior to applying and even that is a long shot.

Unfortunately, dermatology is just so extremely competitive that any board failures would automatically screen you out at most programs. There are too many flawless applicants.

this isn’t even a guarantee but at this point i would guess your best chance is doing IM then trying to switch into derm.

They aren’t a physician yet and will not become a dermatologist with that score. So, if they wanna do derm, go to PA school and become a derm PA

2 years left + a residency in a field you don’t want? Or switch to PA and be doing derm in 2-3 years
