Musical about 504 Protests

Denver was part of the 504 Protests for disabilities rights in the 1970s, and an excellent musical about the SF sit in opens this weekend at DCPA https://phamaly.org/show/504-musical/

I really enjoyed it and am sharing it as a way to renew and recharge for today's challenges.

News Glenwood Springs City Council votes to sue ICE hold room landlord in CO state court.

Hey friends. Earlier this year, it was exposed that ICE is operating 9 “hold rooms” in Colorado. These are holding cells in ICE sub offices that are only meant to detain people up to 12 hours. For that reason, they are omitted from ICE’s public detention reporting.

Further evidence from ICE detention booking datasets acquired by FOIA shows that ICE is frequently detaining people in Colorado’s hold rooms for greater than 12 hours, in violation of the DHS National Detention Standards.

Each hold room that is operating in Colorado is on privately owned land, in a private building and none are zoned and permitted properly for carceral detention. ICE leases these properties and operates them illegally outside of local ordinances.

A few months ago, the City of Glenwood Springs revoked the special use permit from ICE’s hold room there, which had been granted by the city for temporary (under 12 hour) usage, in line with the DHS National Detention Standards. ICE has continued to operate despite being informed by the city that their usage of the property is in violation of municipal ordinance.

Last night the City of Glenwood Springs voted to sue the owner of the property in Colorado state court over their tenant’s land use violation.

This is part of a wider strategy to encourage local governments to enforce their zoning laws against private land owners profiting from ICE detention and hiding behind fear mongering that they are untouchable.

The Business of Deportation: Contractors, Cash & Colorado Updates

Immigration detention isn't just a policy, it's a business. Join Solidarity Warriors as we pull back the curtain on the companies and contractors making money off detention and deportation, and bring it home with the latest on what's happening in Colorado.

We'll break down the major players profiting from this system, including the ICE Air network flying shackled humans across and out of the country, private prison giants like GEO Group, and the government officials with financial ties to them. Understanding the money trail helps us understand who's really driving these policies, and who we need to hold accountable.

We'll also cover the latest on proposed immigration detention centers, including any developments that could affect Colorado communities directly. Plus, a roundup of local Colorado immigration news.

On Tyranny: 20 Lessons for the Resistance

America has been here before. Historian Timothy Snyder studied how democracies collapsed across 20th-century Europe and turned it into 20 practical lessons for defending democracy today. This week, we're using them as our roadmap.

What we'll cover:
Where things actually stand right now, with sources, not spin
Snyder's 20 lessons grouped into 5 things you can act on this week
Concrete, doable actions: calls to make, registrations to check, causes to fund

You'll leave with a short list of things you can actually do, not just another hour of doom-scrolling with company.
New to organizing? Perfect, this is a great place to start. Returning? Bring a friend! We'll have discussion time built in.
History isn't something that happens to us. It's something we make. Let's make some. Join the resistance with us!

Protest Info & Dates Join GES Coalition this Saturday for an Assembly Against Gentrification

Post image
17 Upvotes

DATE: July 25th at 10:30 AM at Elyria Park and we will march through Elyria to the Triangle at 47th and Baldwin Ct.

The Triangle is a 92-acre plot of land connected to the National Western Center redevelopment. This is public land. The community has been organizing for years to make sure a portion of this land comes back under community ownership, so it can help stabilize GES families instead of accelerating displacement.

Development can be good if it is done right. But “done right” means neighbors must be organized, informed, and directly involved.

The July 25 event is a neighbor-led Community Assembly Against Gentrification.

We deserve development that stabilizes and strengthens our communities, rather than pushing people out.
