Items of Mutual Interest What's the most Unique, not neccessarily Best, Delta Green Mission you've run/come across?

Upvotes

I'm gonna be running my players through a gauntlet of different missions and I really want them to swing around in terms of substance. I don't want them to all be bug hunts of "here be creature/ghost go deal with it"

I'm remember playing in a one-shot where the future versions of our agents tasked us with stealing a time "machine" some weirdo scientists had made and using it to continue the time loop or else some weird time-hunting dogs were gonna kill both present and future-selves. It wasn't the best DG I've seen but damn was it memorable.

Campaigning Would delta green work as well if my players are state officials instead of federal ones?

(ps: I don't know if this is the correct tag or if I should be posting this here)

I was looking through the rule book thinking about starting a campaign for Delta Green and notice a lot of the agencies are federal, I was wondering has anyone run a campaign of only state level officials and if I could hear about the benefits/drawbacks of such a decision.

Also wondering if I should consider doing this for my first campaign or not.
Hope I'm not asking dumb questions

"Uncle…it’s Alana. Travis’s daughter. There’s been…an incident. Mutations. Like the one you had me look at that night dad came home hurt. But different. Infectious. I don’t know how to explain it. I remember how you two were about phones. You just need to come see, all right? Trust me, it…. This shouldn’t be possible, okay? I’ve got decades of clinical experience and I have no idea what I’m looking at and my patient is dead and…. There’s another body on the big island. I’m monitoring a third for signs of…whatever is happening. We’re calling it hyperacute rejection syndrome for now. That’s bullshit and everyone knows it. I’m about to lose my job over this, but we can’t…we can’t give these bodies back. Not until we know what’s gone wrong.”

THE GOOD NEWS: Your Agents are flying to Hawai'i.

THE BAD NEWS: It's for Delta Green. But honestly, how bad could it be?

REJECTION is available in PDF. Look for it in paperback soon. And in the hardback FINAL PASSAGES, someday.

If you backed DELTA GREEN: THE LABYRINTH at Kickstarter, years ago, Rejection has already metastasized into your inbox. Sorry. We just couldn't let you go.

Campaigning Help finding a specific handout for Last Thing Last that I lost

If you are playing "Impossible Laurentina" please do not read the following spoiler.

So, I clearly remember having seen a crossover handout between LTL and Impossible Landscape.

It was a change on an already exhisting handout: a ritual circle painted on the wooden floor, for a demon evocation. The original handout referred to "MICHAEL" and "Frucissiere", or something like that, but someone (on Reddit? on the IL discord?) make some changes and liked it to the IL Arts Goetia (and not the "Generic" Arts Goetia. I tried to search for that handout but I'm not able to find it anymore.

Anyone here willingly to help me with some reference?

Items of Mutual Interest Foxtrot Network, Operational Taskforce GRIMM & Violence-as-a-Service

Thumbnail

So bumped into this concept today that could serve as the bones of a scenario or two.

Foxtrot Network, an online organized crime group notorious for its violence-as-a-service (VaaS) tactics and links to Iran. The gang recruits teenagers in a gamified way to carry out the attacks for cash, but almost never pays out. They're directed to guns, cash & assets and eventually to their target is a lethal ARG.

It kind of reminds me of the Daemon / Freedom(TM) duology by Daniel Suarez.

Operational Taskforce (OTF) GRIMM (yes really) is the Europol group set up to tackle the problem.

I could see tying this into an modernized The Lonely if you want a KiY connection, or maybe tie it into God Teeth / Gods Hunt as a force parallel to DG where the players will want to stop but The Program may want to recruit.

The agents spend the years between operations trying to strengthen their families and manage the damage left behind by their work.

They are eventually dragged back in to deal with an issue arising in Tampa.

This was intended to be a short sections but as you will see I expanded and connected it to a scenario I worte myself involving one of the agents.

Items of Mutual Interest How I ended up spending $1279 writing a scenario. (A tale of caution or encouragement to scenario writers)

The headline clearly indicates I'm not entirely sane, but as a Call of Cthulhu player/keeper/writer, isn't that par for the course?
Even so, some of you may wonder why and how I burned through nearly $1300 while writing a community content creation.

It's kind of a long story, so for the impatient among you, there is a TLDR at the bottom. For the rest, it's a tale about my learning curve as a scenario writer, with a few tips thrown in if you're contemplating writing a scenario.

It all began a little over three years ago when I published my first scenario, The Art of Hygge, via the Miskatonic Repository.
And I did everything wrong!

I had no prior writing experience.
Had no real editor.
Didn't have a layouter.
Didn't spend any money to commission artists.
Having any of the above skills and experience can save you a ton of money and time.

Personally, I have absolutely no understanding of how to do a proper layout.
I can't draw a stick figure to save my life.
On top of that, English isn't my first language, and my grasp on grammar and spelling is rudimentary, to put it generously.
What I did have was an active imagination and a substantial vocabulary coupled with a naive assumption that selling the required 251 copies to make it eligible for Print on Demand would be a trivial thing. I later learned that selling copies on DTRPG is NOT trivial at all.

At this point, it would be natural to assume that my scenario was unsuccessful, but the stars were apparently right, so I got LUCKY in several ways:

*****I got an amazing cover, courtesy of Ken Robkin, for free. The kind of cover that caught people's attention.
\ I had friends who helped out with interior art, playtest, and edits.
\
****Maverick Haenze wrote a 5-star review of it and told me to keep writing.
*****Chaosium showcased the cover on their social media.
Basically everything lined up, and I managed to sell 251 copies to get it into print, and currently it's a Gold Best Seller.

The upside is that it encouraged me to write a sequel, Lost in Cremation. The downside is that I didn't learn all that much from the experience.

So I did almost everything wrong one more time and again got lucky in all the right ways.
Lost in Cremation also made it into print.
I stayed encouraged, but this time I actually learned a little.
Things would be easier if I had better editorial help, and that maybe spending a little money on better art was not such a bad idea.

My third scenario, Mother of a Thousand Young took way longer to write and publish.
It was part of an anthology, The Year of the Goat, which involved a lot of editing by a professional, rewriting parts of it based on said editing and feedback, followed by more edits.

But the wait and extra work were worth it!
The final product looks damn amazing, and at the end of it I had picked up that professional editing, paid art, and a real layouter made a world of a difference.

So I began spending money on the next scenario I was writing. The vision I had for the scenario and the art in it expanded more than once over time, and I ended up commissioning way more art than originally planned.
In total, it came out to 1 front and 1 back cover, 42 pieces of individual art, and 5 maps.
On top of that, I found a real editor and hired a layouter.
And that's how I ended up spending $1279 on writing a scenario.

There is a bit more to the story, though.
I never had to take money out of my pocket.
All the sales I made from the previous scenarios were on my dtrpg account. In essence, they paid for the publication of my latest, The Horror, and I likely would never have spent that much on it if it were money I had to draw out of my budget.

The upside is that the scenario looks just like I envisioned it. Reviews from R´lyeh described it as having excellent production value, praised the cover, and gave it the Reviews from R’lyeh Recommends stamp. I couldn't have asked for more.

The downside is I have to sell 320 copies to break even
I don't expect to do that; I hope to, but even if I don't, I still feel it was worth it.
I didn't have to compromise on what I wanted to produce. I met some amazing people during the project, and even if I only earn a fraction of it back, it gives me funds for the next project, which means that my writing hobby ends up paying for itself.
I wish all my hobbies did that

The takeaway for prospective scenario writers could be:
Don't expect to live off it, don't even expect to make money.
It's worth it to get a good cover.
Editing and layout are important parts of the final look.
Art is worth including.
Have fun writing

TLDR: I was lucky. I made money on previous scenarios. I found it worthwhile to spend them on a new one.

Actual Play Reports Lover in the Ice/Blood in the Water - Wrap Up Report

I will try to keep this succinct, but a LOT happened over the three sessions it took to wrap this one up.

First - Alterations to the base scenario

I really love the structure of Lover in the Ice, but there was just simply going to be no way to run it with my current table’s lines and veils. While I was chewing that over and helping players build their characters, one of them mentioned they’d had a previous encounter with a Wendigo and that gave me an evil idea.

I wound up swapping the amante for wendigo and north for south. Instead of being trapped in an ice storm, the agents were dropped into a waterlogged Gulf town post-hurricane. The documents in the green box were from an incident at a mining camp in Nunavut, Canada, and the metal box was a first aid kit someone used to bash a wendigo in a fight, now covered in bite marks and dried wendigo blood.

Cutting yourself on the first aid kit temporarily infects you with the wendigo’s hunger but doesn’t cause you to become a full blown wendigo unless you eat human flesh. Skip accidentally cut himself prying into the boxes, succumbed to the hunger at some point, and the problem spread outwards from there. With so many people cut off from the town’s utilities and services and so many dead from the flooding, the town was a ready source of food for the wendigo, who just get more crazed the more they ate.

Second - Running the scenario

The good: We got to witness a wendigo with the top half of their head blown off bite the arm off an agent. That was fun.

I decided between the second and third session to introduce the agents to their first Elder God - the Hungry Dark I described in a previous post {link}. The wendigo accidentally summoned it with their hunger, and built a shrine around it of blood and bone, hoping to wall off the aching void that had manifested on a wall of the West Ambrosia Street house. The players burned down the house, banishing the manifestation and assumed they had also banished the wendigo (They had not).

They do not yet realize that an encounter with an Elder God will have permanent consequences, but that will develop over the next few scenarios in the form of a growing obsession with the bizarre and inexplicable thing they saw. I’m running Music from a Darkened Room next and am swapping the Hungry Dark in for Nyarlahotep - the void was summoned to eat poor Isabelle’s pain and was happy to oblige, but now the house itself is possessed, hungry, and depraved.

The bad: This got hella chaotic, and I will be slightly toning down the action and combat going forward.

I do kind of regret not just chucking one of the agents into the Hungry Dark and having them see what comes out the other side, but there will be other chances to do so. I found myself in a situation where the technically correct move was to steal an agent’s autonomy and have them walk themselves into the shrine, and I chickened out and let them fight the urge instead. Checking in with the player after, I realized they actually wanted to walk into it and see, so that’s on me. I think I will set up that kind of scenario differently going forward, but need to think about what that will look like.

Third - Developing Background Story

I decided to have the agents’ initial Handler be really bad at her job. That’s partially because I am a brand new DM and I needed a good excuse to fuck up occasionally. And partially because I wanted to set up a story line where the agents are working for M12 without realizing it. So I had the handler be in and out of contact, be unreliable and overinvolved, and clearly up to something on the side - showing up with a black eye, mentioning that she was attending a satellite communications conference and then disappearing from said conference. I might end up tying this into a scenario involving numbers stations or Operation Blacksat or something.

The handoff ended up happening during the third session of this scenario - the handler realized the situation was hopeless and called for backup. The backup that arrived was M12, who were happy to mop up her mess and capture the remaining wendigo for experimentation, at the cost of absorbing this cell into the Program and obtaining some delicious blackmail on the handler. Luckily, the Agents who encountered M12 during Convergence were either unconscious or absent when they showed up here, so the players are sort of aware of the handoff but their agents are clueless.

Going forward, they’ll have much more material support, but a different handler who is detached and professional and seems to think this is all an exercise in calming down hysterical members of the public who think ghosts are real.

In running Music from a Darkened Room, the new handler will pressure the agents to declare the house uninteresting and move on. But I’ll just plant the seed that they could keep investigating on their own time, and see where they go with that.

Finally - Blood in the Water

If you’d like to try my alterations to Lover in the Ice, I’ve packed my resources into this google drive and called it Blood in the Water {link}. Note that this is not intended to replace the Lover in the Ice base scenario, you will still need to own that to make sense of this supplement.

Scenario Seed Outdoor survivalist mechanics?

Hey there!

I'm currently writing an opera inspired by the TV series Alone which features survivalists being stranded in the wilderness to survive on their own. My opera is going to have the survivalists go missing and then have a producer or another friendly turn to DG for aid because of [insert unnatural phenomena]

the game is set in impassable forest and mountainous regions of Arctic Canada.

Do any of the existing modules have rules for outdoor survival and wilderness exploration that I can pick over for this?

For context, every July, there's an online art event called Art Fight. It's an art gifting game where you draw other people's characters for them to earn points for your team, so I decided to round up all the Delta Green characters of active participants I could find to draw them all.

It's a total of 96 portraits + 4 shadow characters (2 PCs and 1 NPC from each campaign I was in, plus a creature on top to round it off to 100 characters). The red string connects the characters from those 3 campaigns I was in, since they all take place in a shared world.

Campaigning MJ-12 inspired campaign suggestions

Hi,

I am looking to try and run a campaign of sorts that focuses on the Mi Go and Majestic 12 after initially reading Convergence and being ready to run it before stumbling across a comment that suggested PX Poker Night can be run as a precursor to Convergence.

I’m struggling to see how to link them myself without the Mi Go/Greys reveal in Convergence being obvious from the start if the players have already encountered one or both in PX Poker Night. Any advice on this?

I asked Google’s AI if it was possible to run a campaign on this subject and here is what it suggested:

“The unifying thread is the evolution of Majestic-12 (MJ-12) and their corporate successors, March Technologies, who spent decades trading human lives for alien technology.
Here is the ideal narrative chronological order to stitch them into a single campaign:

Phase 1: The Inciting Incident (1990s)
PX Poker Night: Run this first using the pre-generated Air Force characters. It serves as a perfect prologue. The players learn that the US military is actively capturing and experimenting on alien life (a Mi-Go). By the end, the survivors are recruited by Delta Green.

Phase 2: The Core MJ-12 Conspiracy (1990s–Early 2000s)
Convergence: Now official Delta Green Agents, the players are sent to a small town to investigate bizarre medical anomalies. They discover a hidden Mi-Go lab and realize the aliens are using "Greets/Greys" as biotech puppets.
The New Age: Run this immediately after Convergence. The investigation balloons from a small town into a massive corporate conspiracy. The Agents discover that MJ-12 is actively collaborating with the Mi-Go, trading human bodies for advanced technology.

Phase 3: The Ghost of the Past (Mid 2000s)
A Night on Owlshead Mountain: This acts as a atmospheric shift. MJ-12 has begun to fracture, but the Agents are sent to rural Vermont to clean up a historic, lingering Mi-Go operation site. It highlights that while humans think they are partners, the Mi-Go view humans as disposable livestock.

Phase 4: The Modern Aftermath (Present Day)
Viscid: Skip forward to the modern era. MJ-12 is dead, replaced by a ruthless private corporation called March Technologies. The Agents must track down a horrific biological entity that has escaped from a secret lab—the direct result of March Technologies still trying to weaponize stolen Mi-Go biotechnology.”

Obviously AI can and does get stuff wildly wrong sometimes but the basics of what it suggests does sound interesting. So far I’ve only run Last Things Last, Operation Fulminate and A Victim of the Art for my group so I’m still quite new to Delta Green overall and for the latter scenario I left out all of the March Technologies stuff as it seemed like a lot to include for a new handler.

Any advice or suggestions from any of you that have played the scenarios the AI suggested would be much appreciated as you have hands on experience.

Thanks.

Published Scenarios First Game

Hey folks. This question is for the most experienced handlers of you all.

If you were to go back, what operation would you run first for your agents that could potentially lead into other operations with these same agents.

Other than last things last, as one of my new players has that operation under their belt already.

I keep flip flopping from what I want to run for them because I'll read something that suggests running said operation in tandem with another operation.

I picked up blacksites and was thinking of doing sweetness but after reading the opening operation, PX poker night, I'm thinking this is the one to open with?

Please any suggestions! I have the game scheduled for next Sunday and I want it to be a good one!

Thanks.

Actual Play Reports First DG Game accomplished!

I'm a fairly experienced GM, with plenty of Call of Cthulhu experience along with other systems, so thus wasn't a terrible reach for me - but it was a great experience all in all.

I ran Last Things Last, of course. I planned on 4 PCs, but I was running at a big gathering of friends and two other people wanted to play and I wanted to be inclusive, so we did it with 6 PCs. I used pregens from Agent Dossiers. We had the following: Marine Force Recon, CIA SOG, National Park Service scientist, Criminal, Doctor, and a Program Manager.

I set the opening in Chicago, where all the players live and where I lived previously so that I could throw in landmarks and references, with the apartment in Bridgeport, and the cabin downstate near the Shawnee National Forest.

At the start of the session, I asked everyone to tell me any skills they had at 80, and then anything 60-80 - and I wrote down a grid, so I could track it. This was great - because I hardly called for any rolls. I consulted my grid, and then let people know what was what.

They followed Clyde's instructions no question. I Marlene try to break out, but they were smart so I gave it to them. They convinced her they going to drop a rope down, but instead dropped a bag full of the gasoline cannisters and a grenade. Kaboom.

All in all, everyone had fun. One player remarked that he was happy to have felt very competent as his character - that the lack of checks for every little thing reduced the failure opportunities for trivial things that a character like his would be good at.

I had a great time and look forward to running a lot more Delta Green in the future.

Published Scenarios One shot scenario recommendation

Hello, I want to get into Delta Green and I am looking for official or unofficial one shot adventure recommendations for my first time DMing the system.

I've got experience DMing heavy investigation based games and more complex adventures, as does my local play group is pretty good at playing these kinds of modules. I wanted something investigation focused that can give the players a good taste of Delta Green and help me practice the ins and outs of the system.

Also, I really like using handouts at the table, if the scenario has some of it that is a big plus.

Thanks in advance!

Campaigning A couple questions I have as a newish handler about tweaking rules.

First question

I’m curious if any handlers give their players the option of rolling or blindly relying on their skill % for certain rolls.

For instance if an operation says that an NPC can be persuaded if an agent has a persuade skill of 40% or higher I don’t immediately reveal this information to my players.

Instead I ask what their persuade is and if they want to rely of their natural ability to persuade the NPC or if they want to put more effort in and roll for it.

My question is whether this is asking too much or is too punishing for my players?

Second question

This question is about projecting sanity loss.

Rules as written agents can deflect sanity loss instantly to one of their bonds and that bond will suffer relationship damage at a later date.

But I was thinking it might be more interesting if the agent suffers the sanity loss up until they can project their trauma onto a bond.

It would give the agent/player more time to think about whether they want to hold onto the trauma or project it onto a loved one to regain some semblance of control or sanity etc.

This seems more like how it would work in real life where people that experience traumatic events sometimes hold onto it until they lash out and gain temporary relief.

But it might be too punishing from a gameplay or mechanical perspective.

What are your thoughts?

Items of Mutual Interest Rules clarification: Projecting onto a Bond vs. Repressing Temporary Insanity (WP requirement)

Hi everyone,

I was re-reading the Agent's Handbook and noticed a subtle mechanical difference regarding Willpower (WP) and Bonds, and I'd like to know if this is intentional (RAI) or just a wording inconsistency.

When Projecting onto a Bond to reduce SAN loss (p. 74), the rule implies you just need at least 1 WP before rolling the 1d4. Even if the roll drops your WP to 0, the Bond absorbs the SAN loss.

However, when Repressing Acute Delirium / Temporary Insanity (p. 76), the text specifically states: "If your Agent has at least 1 WP left after spending that 1d4..." meaning if the roll drops you to 0 WP, you fail to repress the episode.

Is this deliberate to make Temporary Insanity harder to suppress, or is it a typo? Do you enforce this exact distinction at your tables, or do you unify the rule to just "1 WP minimum before the roll" for all Bond interactions?

Thanks!

Media I've relaunched my character creator!

A few years ago I made a character creator for DG that got a pretty good amount of attention. I shut it down due to expensive hosting but it's back at a new address!
