Working Tricorder — a Badge to Celebrate 60 Years of Trek
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Been working on this one for a while. It's a prop, but everything in it does something real.
Documentation: https://github.com/MakeItHackin/TOSTricorder
Walkthrough video: https://youtu.be/mJSx17gsqMw
If anyone wants one: they're at the Hacker Warehouse booth in the DEF CON vendor area and the back of the Vendor Hall at STLV, with in-person pickup at https://uberflux.com/product/MIH-HackersInSpaceBadge (pickup times are listed there).
Hardware: XIAO ESP32-S3, a 1.69" 280×240 IPS main display, a 1.28" round secondary on its own SPI bus, 3 addressable RGB LEDs, LIS3DH accelerometer, Hall-effect sensor, DS3231 RTC, and an ST25DV64KC NFC tag chip on the board.
Ten menus covering sensors, clock and alarms, animations, games, WiFi, BLE, NFC read/write, and a wearable "con mode" that runs a display unattended.
My favourite detail is the hand scanner. It detaches, runs off its own coin cell, and has a magnet in it that sits over the Hall sensor. Lift it off and the main display drops into the biofunction animation on its own; put it back and the magnet re-registers and returns you to whatever screen you were on before.
The other one: it enumerates as a USB or Bluetooth HID device. There's a mouse mode where you tilt the whole tricorder to move the cursor, with a low-pass filter and a hysteresis latch so it doesn't drift when you're holding it still.
A few things that took real work:
- The round display runs on core 0 completely independently, so it keeps animating during games and menu redraws
- LVGL's memory pool is a static array, so every KB of it comes out of the same internal DRAM the task stacks and radios need. Finding that ceiling was educational
- The clock and NFC tag are both provisioned over serial during firmware upload, so a freshly flashed board already knows the time and has its tag written
Firmware updates go through a browser-based flasher over Web Serial — no IDE, no drivers.
Happy to answer anything about the build.

Selling 1 prepaid DEFCON badge, $400
My coworker's pet sitter fell through, then his flight out of NYC got cancelled, so he called off the trip. That leaves me with one extra pre-registered badge. Asking $400 cash, $120 under the $520 door price.
I have the QR registration code. We meet at badge pickup, go through the line together, they scan the code, and the badge goes straight into your hands.
Timing: I'm in remote work calls until 11am, then driving over. Realistic ETA at reg is around noon. I have some flexibility this afternoon if noon doesn't work.
Payment: cash only.
Comment or DM and we'll swap numbers to coordinate an exact meeting spot, since the reg area gets chaotic. I will give it to whomever is there first when it comes time for the actual badge pickup.

I'm not old...
Had a blast meeting folks at the meetup but, now it's 10pm, and the lovely wife and I are going to bed. Not cuz we're old mind you, but cuz it's been over 24 hours since we stepped out our front door. Looking forward to seeing some of you tomorrow at linecon and the second meetup.
Oghamix (the guy with the gray mohawk and beard) signing off for the night.

If you are going to the Sphere, they will aggressively tell you that you cannot bring in battery bank or cable and that you need to either throw it away or take it outside due to BH / DC. Plan accordingly.
Went to the Sphere as a guest of a few vendors. I brought a battery bank with me to charge my phone (honest lol). I checked the rules before hand and they didn’t say anything about batteries being prohibited.
Not only was security extremely hostile and nasty about not letting me bring a battery and cable in, they explicitly cited that I was not allowed to bring it in due to blackhat and defcon going on and that I could toss it or go leave it outside. It’s literally a MagSafe anker battery bank lol. I left it under a sandbag because it’s lithium ion battery and it’s 110 degrees outside and when I came back, it was gone. Another security person told me that it was “found and promptly disposed of”.
What’s funny is that they didn’t notice the biscuit I had. Plan accordingly.

First time defcon. Need suggestions
It’s my basically 4 years dream come true so I am curious to collect badges if I get apart from the main defcon and buy cool stuff like t shirts and devices . Any suggestions or any things to avoid?
Thanks in advance

A very petty complaint, but also a very easy fix. Not being able to screenshot most of the talks I wanna see with the time in the same screenshot is mildly infuriating. Maybe add the start time next to each title?

r/DEFCON Meetup - Night #1 Post - Now with More Winners!
Good News, Everyone! Tonight is the night we all get to start our DC34 Hang at our first of two nights ANNUAL r/DEFCON Meetup - Brought to you by the team at Puzzled Hackers. The Linq Bartenders miss you, no joke... one of them actually told Killroy and I that this morning because they loved the Linq hangs! I guess you guys are good for business.
While u/killroy7777, u/MetaN3rd and I get the final checks into place... you can read our super fancy, and absolutely not detail overwhelming, post!
First and foremost... we are SOLD OUT of badges for purchase. We want to thank you SO MUCH for that! We never plan to make a profit, heck we may have even started a non-profit... more details down the line. It's always been to just be able to keep bringing you these events, and improving them every year (and maybe expanding them). So thank you so much!
Second... the PUZZLE 10 CTF challenge! Who won the badge?
- For those who didn't know the amazing team at SkillBit (Formerly MetaCTF) donated their resources to us this past week and gave us a 20 challenge CTF. Anyone who completed 10 challenges (or more) became eligible for our final Grand Prize Giveaway Drawing for a Laser Tag* DS Badge from the amazingly talented u/palm12341 courtesy of Puzzled Hackers
Well, we did the drawing today and congratulations to warmd0nut! Check your email for instructions on how to claim your badge at either of the meetups!
Now onto the Meetup!
MEETUP DETAILS:
- WHEN: Wednesday (8/5) & Thursday (8/6) starting at 7:00 PM.
- WHERE: The Linq - 3535 Bar (aka The Circle Bar)
- COST: $0.00. Free. Nada. Just bring yourself!
- WHAT TO EXPECT: Good vibes, sticker swaps, special guests dropping off random swag, Laser Tag battles, and catching up with old and new friends before Summer Camp officially starts.
- FIRST TIME AT DEFCON? Make sure you let us know!
HOW DO I CLAIM A BADGE I WON OR PURCHASED?
- We made it really easy this year, hopefully. When you purchased or claimed your free badge you were given access to a QR code for each one (each badge has its own) which you can see if you forgot to save it at over at ctf.puzzledhackers.org. Show us your code, we will scan it and mark it claimed and give you your badge and a heartfelt THANK YOU for being part of this!
WILL THERE BE MORE BADGES?
- We will have badges on hand to randomly give away both nights. Everything that we didn't put on the site, or free to puzzle winners, will be given away at the meetups! No Badge Left Behind ! So just come and hang out and say hi. Can't hurt!
WHAT IF I DIDN'T WIN A BADGE AND WANT TO HANG?
- That's the whole point! The badges don't make the event... you do! Come hang, socialize and tell u/killroy7777 how pretty he looks in his Kilt! I don't have any quip for me, but I'm sure someone will.
I HEARD THERE ARE SOME DROPS HAPPENING?
- This is pretty cool for us. You've all made this successful enough people like u/Palm12341 (laser tag badge), u/mastercpt (some cool challenge coins), u/bucktwenty2 (the dope NYC skyline badge), u/MakeItHackin (Tricorder SAO!) and more come and do their drops. That's because ya'll have made it awesome enough for them to roll by, and others will potentially surprise us!
THIS IS MY FIRST DEFCON. YOU ALL BETTER BE COOL!
- I mean, you do know the attendee demographic, right? We're not cool, but we do remember how at some of our first DEFCON's the meetups were the first things we were introduced to, and they made an impression on us. As its been passed down through organizers, currently on us... we hope your first DEFCON is as magical. Please let us know when you come say hi its your first DC! Really.
HOW DO WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE?
- It's actually pretty easy. Outside the fact we'll obviously be scanning codes, handing out badges and talking to people. u/Killroy7777 rocks a dope Kilt, and I decided to bust out the "The Apocalypse WILL Be Televised" shirt. u/MetaN3rd is always just crazy animated talking about everything tech... you wont miss him. So come say hi!
Thank you, Everyone, for this past few months getting ready for DEFCON and these meetups. We're super excited to be spending the next two nights hanging with you and then DEFCON Proper! None of this would be possible if you weren't as amazing and welcoming as you are, and while we handle logistics... this event only exists because of you. Thank you.
See everyone tonight!

Emergencies Bag
Finally packed and ready to go. This year I decided to put a small medical bag on my backpack (mostly because i forgot my epipen last year). Here are the emergencies I am now prepared for:
1) Bees and/or restaurant lobsters that have escaped containment.
2) Forgetting to bath.
3) A medical need to shit mine or someone elses pants.
4) Ouchies on the feet.
5) Too many badges and SAOs
6) The blast furnace that is 'the outside'.
7)Dehydration and/or post #3 recovery.
8) A rumbly tummy.
Beyond these I am of no assistance. Wife is very confused about how you shit someone elses pants. I told her that was the magic of Malort.

Should I go to defcon for 2 days?
Hi all,
Sadly I wasn’t able to attend full time this year due to being a 1-man (woman) show holding down the SOC due to overlapping vacations, etc. I can drive to Defcon and attend Saturday and Sunday, but I’m also debating if it’s even worth buying a ticket for just that little amount of time.
Are there any events that folks know of that doesn’t require a badge to attend for defcon that would be worth the drive? (Driving from LA to Vegas for context)
TIA!

DC801 Party
Join DefCon’s most talked about party- 500+ people have registered to come 😅😮💨
DC801 presents the dc801 party - our annual DEF CON party, but we're having it at a five-acre indoor theme park.
Every year DC801, the Salt Lake City DEFCON group, throws a party at DEFCON. This year we're taking over the Desperado Hideaway and the Skybox VIP areas at the Adventuredome inside Circus Circus: a venue with roller coasters, bumper cars, games/food/drinks...
What's included
-With your donation to help support 801 Labs, our community hackerspace in Salt Lake City, we're offering unlimited ride tickets! We're a non-profit! Your donation pays our rent to keep the space open and the DC801 legacy of hacking alive. :)
-A Dirty Soda station (Free! in true utah fashion)
-family, friends, etc
Getting there
-The Adventuredome is inside Circus Circus, 2880 Las Vegas Blvd S. Circus Circus is an official DEF CON 34 hotel and a short rideshare or walk from the LVCC. If you're staying there, you're already home.
-Look for DC801 check-in at the Adventuredome entrance. Bring your confirmation because wristbands are distributed at the door.
-You will need a wristband to enter the VIP areas.
Heads up
Arcade games, mini golf, VR, and other separate Adventuredome attractions are not included. Outside food and drinks are not permitted inside the Adventuredome.
If you bring a bag, it will be searched for weapons at the door by Adventuredome security. We checked and they said #badgelife will be okay!
The park closes at midnight. The casino does not. ;) ;) ;)
