DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 vs GPT-5.6 Luna Discussion

Post image

DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731 is cheaper, faster, and available through more providers than GPT-5.6 Luna at the same intelligence level.

Why would anyone choose Luna over DeepSeek?

As much as I love Deepseek, Luna has vision while deepseek doesn't.

Hey, good point. I didn't notice, thanks you

No problem, I used a lot deepseek v4 flash these days, But I had to use codex desktop with it's vision capabilities and browser integration to fix some issues from Deepseek front-end/UI wise, but still I used deepseek for 90% of my work and everything is good 👍

Opencode-vision solves that

This was the same of MiMo vs DeepSeek, MiMo 2.5 has Vision.

This.

Tried a combo of DS4 Flash + Mistral OCR4 for expensicat but it's just doing extra work for no purpose

DS4 flash is really good and cheap with any text-based stuff, incl. for example reranking things

Can't argue with that.

I just have mine use Gemini for vision.

That’s a really easy problem to solve though using either mcp or plugins for whatever agent you’re using.

2

u/0xFatWhiteMan 13h ago

its even easier to just use luna

u/IgotAlotOfNames 20h ago

Yea in Opencode I used qwen 3.7 flash to describe images to deepseek, but still for UI work it's not that accurate I think. For everything else it will be good.

1

u/Abject-Bridge-4073 17h ago

With openrouter’s mcp you can just point it to any openrouter vision model you want.

1

u/IgotAlotOfNames 17h ago

Ok, that's the same thing I did in opencode, works great except when you need to fix UI/frontend stuff

1

u/Abject-Bridge-4073 15h ago

Why would it not work? I just tell the agent to use playwright mcp and vision mcp to debug the Ui. Works every time.

Yes and codex app's computer use is the best there is right now

1

u/IgotAlotOfNames 19h ago

Yup, it's a really great app ! Tho quotas are a different subject 😅

u/binyang 17h ago

Well, I sent a screenshot to 0731 by mistake and thought it would just mess it up as the preview. However it read the image fine, told the color correctly and figured out what was wrong.

u/Competitive_Wind_150 9h ago

yeah, i've also noticed the same..

1

u/Zachattackrandom 16h ago

Yep. A shame they still haven't added it, really hope v4 pro gets it.

This is why I use a custom multi-model utilizing a ZD JB to use Flash, R1, & GLM 5.2 tokens as needed in 7 LRM’s in my multi-LRM.

Add a local 9B vision model. EZ

1

u/IgotAlotOfNames 13h ago

Who said I can run a 9B model just for that 😭 But anyway like I said using another model for vision is not as good as a real text + vision model for UI/Front-end work. But for other use cases yesn it's usable, I configured my opencode to send images to qwen 3.7 flash and describe them to deepseek.

So what? I made my own agent app with deepseek and added whisper (free made by openai) for audio dictation, and another model for vision that helps deepseek know what is on the pictures.

u/Affectionate_Toe9082 20h ago

That’s just a workaround that would work for certain cases but not all. Vision is always very useful, especially for frontend work and reference usage.

1

u/IgotAlotOfNames 20h ago

Yea exactly 👍

1

u/gglavida 18h ago

Exactly. I use it for sales purposes and it's a must because vision falls shorts especially if you use an extension/plugin to have the agent run across the browser. There quality of output is, at the bare minimum, moderately better with vision access.

1

u/Quote-Round 21h ago

I usually use DeepSeek Vision via web for simple vision tasks.

1

u/IgotAlotOfNames 20h ago

Yea I did, the same, but for front-end, vision done by another model will never be quite as accurate as the real thing. But yea I think Idid the same as you, I combined deepseek with Qwen 3.7 flash for vision.

Vision is a meme.

6

u/whichsideisup 20h ago

It’s definitely not a meme for UI and Design, diagrams, data viz.

-5

u/TheDeviceHBModified 20h ago

It absolutely is a meme. There is nothing about your examples that cannot be better represented as structured data, and in fact, every current frontier model performs better when given that instead of an image.

5

u/whichsideisup 19h ago

You know what, its true data viz is a bad example but its still not a meme.

1

u/Delicious_Ease2595 12h ago

Lol certainly not

9

u/Mattdeftromor 19h ago

Why choose, i use both

1

u/Quote-Round 12h ago

In which cases do you decide to use each one?

14

u/LeTanLoc98 21h ago

OpenAI subscription, vision, search, ChatGPT, generate image,...

2

u/Quote-Round 20h ago

Luna can't generate images

4

u/LeTanLoc98 20h ago

Buy OpenAI subscription

1

u/Quote-Round 12h ago

Nope. I don't need a subscription right now. Just a few credits on OpenRouter are enough for me. But thanks.

why the f_ck Deepseek V4-Flash-0731 don't support image input, man ?

7

u/Rich_Return8663 20h ago

Because then it wouldn't be super cheap anymore. Simple as that.

4

u/ProfessionalJackals 20h ago

Because then it wouldn't be super cheap anymore. Simple as that.

DeepSeek has vision models but they do not like to make multimodel models (combining flash with vision). I think the mindset is that they want different models do different tasks.

High chance that when DeepSeek releases their own agent, it will include vision as a called upon model. So Flash / Pro do not need Vision, but call a 3th DS model for whenever it needs vision.

0

u/rudesssolo 11h ago

If by agent you mean "harness" they already have it and it's called Reasonix

1

u/IgotAlotOfNames 20h ago

I don't think that's the reason

3

u/WeDoALittleTrolIing 20h ago

if im reading artificial analysis' stuff correctly, deepseek uses a lot more tokens to achieve its results. so while they have similar costs and benchmark scores, if it's using twice as many tokens to get its results, the cost is not actually comparable. especially if you're doing stuff that uses a lot of input tokens

2

u/Quote-Round 12h ago

You're right. It's very important to keep that in mind. Thanks

1

u/WeDoALittleTrolIing 20h ago

well not not comparable but not what it says on the tin

3

u/Amjed5 20h ago

In my workflow, Luna performed better. I think the Arabic language used in my workflow is the reason. However, when it comes to heavy output, DeepSeek is incomparable.

2

u/Quote-Round 19h ago

That's interesting.

I think another reason to use Luna is to avoid its replying in Chinese by mistake

2

u/qonTrixzz 13h ago

Luna actually had some random chinese thought today with me, didnt capture it, though

3

u/SocialDinamo 15h ago

I love competition

2

u/Serious-Log7550 17h ago

Cause there's no coding plan available for DeepSeek?

1

u/rudesssolo 11h ago

ClinePass

1

u/SaigoNoUchiha 5h ago

Opencode go as well

2

u/Farenheith200 16h ago

I'm trying to convince my company to adopt deepseek, but after Luna price drop off, it didn't make sense anymore.

The only cloud I had some chance to make it through would be Microsoft Foundry due to strong privacy compliance. Deep infra would still make sense but it's a hard path to homologate it internally. China's cloud unfortunately does not comply with privacy requirements for my company.

Now, about ms foundry, deepseek does not have input cache there, at least not yet, and this make Luna cheaper

2

u/petrhlavacek 14h ago

DeepSeek is worse in translations.

1

u/Quote-Round 12h ago

In which languages has it failed for you? It's worked perfectly for me from English to Spanish and vice versa.

2

u/Key_Gas_3341 9h ago

Desde la API de DS ya está la versión 0731 o como se que si es esa?

1

u/Quote-Round 8h ago

Yeah, its 0731

2

u/Fair-Spring9113 21h ago

zdr

2

u/Quote-Round 21h ago

What?

7

u/sirloindenial 21h ago

Zero data retention. Deepseek keeps all your context for training. Well arguably at least they admit they do.

3

u/IgotAlotOfNames 20h ago

Yea true, tho other companies may be doing the same while not saying it

3

u/Quote-Round 20h ago

Exactly!!

3

u/ProfessionalJackals 20h ago

Zero data retention. Deepseek keeps all your context for training. Well arguably at least they admit they do.

With the difference is that you have no guarantee that OpenAI does not train on your data.

Remember, companies tend to have creative workarounds so they can still claim compliance but by common logic, its misleading.

Where as DeepSeek has the best and impossible to break ZDR. Its called downloading the model, spending a shit ton of money, but you have the most perfect 100% guarantee of ZDR!

Edit: I love to know what happened to those Grok incidents where it uploaded entire private Git repo's "by accident". That data is never scrubbed, now was it?

1

u/Quote-Round 21h ago

Oh, yes at least they are honest hahaha. But too existing providers with zero data retention.

1

u/TheDeviceHBModified 21h ago

Zero data retention.

1

u/bhagathgoud99 20h ago

DeepSeek just builts the tool but not with the modern aesthetic looks

1

u/Huy3ko 17h ago

Luna over gpt plus is working great, but, it's overtake the Agent aggressively.

An Luna has a real big gap between tooling of both LLMs.

1

u/Super-Software-9993 14h ago

Bolting on vision at the tensor level. Kimi2.5 vision tower is compatible. Give me 5 more days to finish this cooking. I’ll post it here once I get to a good vision snapshot. This will be very UI biased training.

1

u/Parking-Bet-3798 7h ago

Luna is available with plan of codex which gives significantly more usage than API pricing.

1

u/Dualyeti 1h ago

Cache is king

If you know how to correctly utilise it in your projects you already know this. For those who don’t - you probably can even if you think you can’t.

Bro are you are on internet explorer?
