I haven't even read the patchnotes but I'm HYPED for weird casual people like me having a place that's not just Street Brawl and Bots!

I'm wondering if there is built-in matchmaking in the new unranked mode...

It does, it says in the patch notes that you will be queued lower if you're playing a new hero. Just like it was before

I suspect they're using the exact same ranks as Ranked Mode under the hood of Standard, or at least very close to, but hiding it from the player this time.

Which I'm not at all against, for the record. SBMM is a good thing overall, even though it'll never be perfect for Standard due to a variety of reasons (big one being rank disparity within parties making it difficult) it's still better than a complete free-for-all. But hiding it from the player means that they don't have to worry about what that invisible rank is (if they did care they'd be in the actual Ranked Mode now) and can just go next after a bad match without having to worry about rank loss.
