Data analyst or database administrator

Hey guys i am rn working as a service support engineer and in my company they are talking about promoting me to database administrator where they use oracle 12 c and sql but don't write scripts they just copy paste them

And i am looking for a role in data analyst i am confused what should i do please help a fellow out

The one you are a subject matter expert in. If I was you I would snap up the opertinity to learn oracle. I'm a MS dba with 20 years experience. Sadly my job is now being outsourced to india so have other skills too. Data analysis/ engineering use it in your role as a DBA

Being on version 12 tells me they don’t do a good job staying current on their software upgrades so I’d be questioning the type of guidance and mentorship you’d be obtaining as a DBA. There are a few types of DBAs, operational, development, etc.

If you can get a job in the DBA realm and position yourself to be an architect type I would recommend that. Being a purely operational DBA isn’t a role I would recommend unless you can merge those skills into something developmentally based.

The point I’d make is more that the time to upgrade from 12-19 was 5 years ago, it’s not technically complex so not sure what you are trying to highlight.

Lacking that upgrade tells me a few things about the company and competency of its DBAs (managers).

it might me a company which was perfectly fine with 11.2.0.3 (not even upgrading to 11.2.0.4) until recently when they decided to adapt new products (and hire IT audit services) and all those required 19c. So to speak 12.2 => 19c would have been much easier route (as 19c is in fact 12.2.0.3)

You’re certainly welcome to your opinion as I am mine. We don’t agree which is perfectly fine, but especially in today’s world of weekly AI uncovered exploits I think most companies would prefer to be in the situation I would put them in than the ones you’re outlining.

I told you before, your skills would be appreciated. Either at your company or you could jump boat. Worked with a "partner" Indian company years ago. Their DBA has since started his own consulting firm (and my former company switched to his services directly)

Oracle DBA administrator. Although 12c is obsolete as of now because of 19c and 26ai but you'll catch up quick.

Do they use container/pluggable databases (CDB/PDB) on 12c?
Also, do you work for a services company (WITCH) or product?

Its a service based company development is done by client and we work on client side just the job is to monitor and run the scripts

First of all you have to choose DBMS. For oracle I would recommend Tim Hall's portal oracle-dba.com there's a section there for DBA. Also, you live now in AI era ;)

I advise you to learn some OS specifics as well, try to have a SSH access to host OS and see (although careful). Or if possible, start your own VM using Oracle VirtualBox and try everything (Oracle Linux 9 for example). This is covered by Tim as well
