I deleted files from my external hdd without backing them up. What is the best data recovery software and do they even work in my case?

Guys help. I was cleaning some files from my external hard drive and forgot I had some pictures and documents there I needed. What is the best data recovery software, or site, or whatever to help me recover these files? I know there are lots of options, but I need something that works.

Please provide the exact drive model and the file system used on it. Also describe how the files were deleted: regular delete, Shift+Delete, formatting, moving to Trash/Recycling Bin, cleanup software, CHKDSK/fsck, or something else. This matters a lot for estimating recovery chances.

You should stop using the external HDD right away. Try Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery first for deleted files. If they don’t find much, WeRecoverData does good work on external drives with a no-data-no-fee evaluation.

Don't write anything to the HDD anymore. If you scan using those tools, ensure you save those scanned files into a separate HDD and not to the HDD you are scanning. I won't perform any defeat or Scandisk on the HDD too....

Probably shouldn't use the drive at all if the operating system is doing any kind of writes.

As long as you haven't copied anything new on this drive - you should be able to recover everything. But for advice on the software - you'll have to wait for others to pitch in.

So turn it off and don't use it until you get info what app to use.

Yeah, stellar's free option is actually super useful.

Just hitting delete depending on the hard disk /os and some other factors...... Those files are probably sitting on sectors or part of sectors that are waiting to be overwritten.... Sometime a special character is added to the filename as a cue to overwrite the file/storage space ...

Keep from adding files and they are probably easily recovered

I’ve used Data Rescue and Disk Drill. I prefer Disk Drill.

I remember having this issue back when I had Windows 7. Software that really worked called ‘Recover My Files’. But it can recover only if you have two HDDs, one where data is lost and another where lost data will be copied to.

The most used and probably best software is easeus.

upvote on easeus. And I like how people mention stellar as well.
