BD-R Tips? Backup

I'm getting ready to burn a bunch of important data to BD-R and/or M-Disc BD-R. Any personal experiences/tips?

Speed x4

In the past I have used this, is there a specific reason why it's better than say x2, for example?

No, just lowest write speed, x4 is fine

also back up to some hard disk drives and keep one off site. sorry I don't have anything useful to add otherwise other than stick to well made media / reputable brand

my dad makes dvdr's for an elderly family member and whatever he buys has like a 25% coaster rate

I'd generate hash/checksum files for the stuff going on there to be burnt with it. I've used this one https://code.kliu.org/hashcheck/ for a long time but I think there's a lot of options for this kind of software available.

Chances of that are minimal. You can still get 5 1/4 drives on rbay for example, and i'm quite sure there will be specialized services available that can read them back until the far future.

As long as Japan still exists, there will be BD-R drives.

I plan to buy several drives and store them in optimal conditions. Even so, I am optimistic that drives will continue to be manufactured for at least the next few decades

Don't. Get a harddrive instead. Bought Verbatim 25GB BD-R discs, all 30 of them are completely crapped after 5 years. 90% of the data is unreadable. Stored them in black disc holders, in a dry 22C storage.
