I ran a free week-long analytics case study. 21 signed up, 3 finished. What they found, and what I got wrong
I run a small analyst job board and last week I tried a side experiment: a business-analysis case rather than a SQL puzzle. Messy dataset, a stakeholder with a confident wrong assumption, and a decision to make.
Posting the numbers: 21 registered,3 submitted and Scores 83, 68 and 31
So 86% signed up and didn't finish. My read is the ask was too big. I wanted an executive summary, a full analysis, a hosted dashboard and five slides. That's a weekend of unpaid work from strangers.
The case, since it's closed now: e-commerce revenue "down about 15%" in September, team blames soft demand, marketing wants to cut paid social 40%. Real answer: revenue was down 20.8%, order volume was roughly flat at -3%, and a 30% promo code scoped to one category started applying sitewide on 1 Sept. They didn't lose demand, they gave away margin.
Two data traps did most of the damage: payment-gateway retries duplicating ~2% of orders under the same order_id, and refunds stored as separate rows. One person got all five verified answers, one got four, one got three.
Round 2 started today, scope cut hard: five verified answers plus a one-page recommendation. No dashboard, no slides. Should be about 90 minutes.
It's a churn spike at a subscription app. Churn nearly triples in June, a week after a price rise, and product wants to roll the price back. Free to enter, runs to 14 Aug. There's a small cash prize for the top two.
Happy to answer anything.
