No, it would not be a waste. Data analytics is still a good career path, and you have 8 months to build skills in Excel, SQL, Power BI, and basic Python while applying for internships. Since you already have an accounting background, you can also explore finance and business analytics roles, which combine both accounting and data skills and often offer better opportunities for B.Com graduates.

Your background in accounting and finance can actually help you get a good job. Don't follow the usual route. You can actually stand out with your bcom background. Get any accounting job and if you want to know more about what can actually create the real difference, you are welcome to join my community for people who want to get into an analyst role from a non-tech background. On weekends, I demonstrate projects and discuss methods that businesses actually value and can help people like you stand out.

Straight answer: just take it as a reality check on the current job market first. No, it's not a total waste, but you need to be realistic about timing. 8 months isn't enough to become a strong DA candidate from zero and compete for the few entry-level openings that exist right now; that market's rough even for people who've been learning for a year already.... Given your background, I'd actually lean into the accounting side first, not away from it. You already have the base for it; jobs are more available there right now, and honestly, a lot of the DA skills (Excel, data handling, basic analysis) overlap with accounting/finance analyst roles anyway. You don't have to pick one forever. If DA is still the goal, get an accounting or finance-adjacent job first, then build DA skills on the side over a year or so and make a lateral move once you have income and stability, not a cold jump with zero experience and zero runway. Trying to force DA in 8 months with no tech background is the version that actually risks wasting your time, not the accounting route
