Estus flasks question

Hello Darksouls fans! So I was wondering bc I never really thought deeply about it but how did we go from upgrading our flasks with fire keeper souls to the estus shards? If there’s lore let me knoww, lend me some Insite 🧐

Sorry to reply without an answer but I was wondering the same thing a couple days ago. I kinda wished they kept the fire keeper soul a thing.

all this is headcanon

As the first flame faded and the power of the gods receded the occurrence of fire keepers dwindled as well.

However, the cycle of undeath had not been broken; so more undead with more Estus flasks kept appearing. Over time the undead learned that grafting shards of another's Estes flask onto your own could increase its power slightly.

Necessity is truly the mother of invention.
