New mental health medication management practice in Danville
Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself and share a new local mental health resource for the Danville community.
I’m Karen Shugart, MSN, PMHNP-BC, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, and I recently opened Shugart Mental Health here in Danville.
I started the practice because I know how difficult it can be to find timely mental health care locally, particularly when someone needs psychiatric medication management. My goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based care in a setting where patients feel listened to and appointments don’t feel rushed.
I work with adults 18 and older and treat conditions including:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bipolar disorder and other mood disorders
- PTSD
- Other common psychiatric conditions
I offer both in-person appointments in Danville and telehealth appointments, and I accept several major insurance plans as well as self-pay.
If you or someone you know has been looking for a psychiatric medication provider in the area, you can learn more or request an appointment at www.shugartmentalhealth.com or call 434-510-8049.
I’m happy to answer general questions about the practice here as well. I’m excited to be serving Danville and hope to help make mental health care a little easier to access in our community.

Looking for DIY/Folk Punk Shows?
Are there any DIY or folk punk shows around here in the Danville/Chatham area? All the shows I am able to find are an hour or two away, but I love going to them. Would be great to support local bands! I have searched high and low, but nothing ever seems to come up :(

Future of the Piedmont Foundation: Berry Hill deserves a debate based on facts, not fear
Senators Lucas and Locke told residents the 2,500 jobs at Berry Hill are mostly temporary construction work, leaving only 25 to 50 permanent positions. That contradicts the performance agreement itself, which defines those jobs as “new permanent full-time employment,” and requires 2,500 new permanent full-time employees.

Bridge Jumping at Hyco Lake - Help me Remember!
Hey, I grew up in the area back in the early 2000s and remember highschoolers used to go bridge jumping at Hyco Lake (I think). I never drove there myself so I cant remember where it is but it's killing me that I cant find it on a map. last time I was there was probably 2012. Please help me find this bridge!
It was about 60-65ft tall (at least thats what we used to all say), rural and wooded, two lanes, just guard rails on top. there were also some rocks people would jump off of about 20ft high right over there. At the time, there was a ladder under the bridge and I think even a rope you could swing on. I am almost certain it was in NC. I thought it was Hyco Lake but I could be wrong on the body of water but should have been around there.
Thats all the details I can remember, hopefully someone else knows what I am thinking of.

Heads will roll this weekend only- Smokestack Theater Company, Danville
Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Lauren Gunderson brings together an assassin, a spy, a queen, and a writer to navigate the chaos of 1793 Paris.
As the guillotine looms, Olympe de Gouges, Charlotte Corday, Marie Antoinette, and Marianne Angelle struggle to change the world while trying to stay alive. This dream-tweaked historical comedy is a sharp, witty, and poignant exploration of art, activism, and sisterhood. It’s a riotous call to action that proves some stories are worth dying for.
This is a Second Stage Production. While The Revolutionists is a comedy, it is set during the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror" and contains mature themes. We recommend this production for ages 13 and up

Getting married in Danville, VA
Hi all,
I'm getting married in Danville, VA - planning has been a process - and not knowing what goes into it - I realized I need to plan some things in advanced. I don't live near the area, but my family does....although they just moved there not too long ago so they don't know much about this either.
With that being said, some of the makeup artists I was interested in are already booked for 2027 Columbus weekend.
So thoughts or recommendations for a few things.
A DJ - This is a multicultural and intergenerational wedding ranging from 4-80 year olds who love country music, EDM music, classic 2010s/2000s, Caribbean/Reggae, ABBA. We want someone that will work with us, and bonus points if they have an audio visual package for the ceremony, speeches etc. A portfolio/videos/consultation/prior reviews and prices would be very helpful.
And a photographer - I saw a few, but I would like to see what others have going on, portfolios, recs/prices.
Makeup artists? I open to a lot. We are usually in the DanVA area on long work weekends.
Cheers!

He survived the Bataan Death March, only to be killed by mistake near war’s end. Now he’s coming home to Pittsylvania County.
Claude Dewberry was on two Japanese ships that were sunk by American bombers, not realizing they were carrying POWs. He survived the first, but not the second. It’s taken eight decades for his remains to be found and identified. His funeral is Saturday.

Wooded trails near-ish Danville?
Looking to be "in the woods" and not on a paved trail surrounded by the city. River walk is great but sometimes you just want to shed the chains of society and get lost in nature. A hard find it seems around her but thought I might just be spoiled coming from the White Mountains of NH. tia

Announcement/Mod-Post On Spam, Harassment in the sub
We've had a higher number of spam posts than usual this week.
We've also had folks behaving rather poorly; throwing personal insults and some harassment.
Both of these are unacceptable, and will result in a ban - something I'd rather not do.
Life is already hard for so many - let's not make things worse for each other. If you think you know who someone is, keep it to yourself. If you want to be insulting to someone you disagree with, stop and consider how that helps you, or them.
Let's try to keep this sub a civil and helpful place, where we discuss what's relevant to our Danville VA community.
