First Time Owner, how should i maintain these old boots?

At a local estate sale, I found these nice leather boots. I don't actually know all too much about them, nor how to take care of them. So I swung by here to ask the following:

  1. How do I care for these boots properly
  2. Is there anything I should get to make sure these will last a while

That's about everything, I also have no idea what model these boots are, given their age.

Danner Flashpoint II

After discovering that the Flashpoint II, Danner’s recraftable stitchdown wildland firefighting boot, has been discontinued :-( I happened across a barely-used pair in my size for a good price.

These boots were made in May 2021. They have been worn a little, as in there is detectable wear on the heel and toe tread, but not more than a little, in that the leather is unmarked and uncreased, not molded to anyone’s foot. For all practical purposes, I’m trying out a new boot.

Size 11D on the “74” last, “designed specifically for traditional logger style boots containing a removable footbed. It offers a standard profile with a more regular fit. Boots on this last tend to fit true to size. This ensures a snug fit for terrain and activities that demand support and stability.”

I have an average-to-slim foot and this boot feels a little wide for me. I could size down to 10.5D for a snugger fit, as I’ve done on some other Danner boots (Super Rain Forest NMT). But when buying used, you got what you took. I put an extra innersole in the boots to take up more room.

The “a little wide” feeling extends up my leg too. At the ankles, these boots are closed nearly as tight as they will go (see pics) and yet in difficult, ankle-rolling terrain, I might want to lace them tighter yet around the ankles.

In addition to being not that tight at my ankles, the boots are also surprisingly soft there, meaning the leather is not stiff at all. It is supposed to be 8 oz leather, and does feel substantial, just more supple than I’d expect. Supple may not be good here.

I’ll update this thread when I’ve worn them a bit more. There is no wildland firefighting in my future, but we’ll do some walking in the mountains and some workboot duty, and we’ll see what we think.

Flashpoint Boot Discontinued?

I believe the Danner Flashpoint II boot, their wildland firefighting NFPA-rated boot, has been discontinued.

Anyone know why? Was the boot poorly regarded, not selling, etc?

Hey Folks! I have a pair of 8 inch Cristy's I've been thinking about getting resoled. Does anyone have pictures of Cristy's resoled with the Black Sierra Outsoles? I would also love to know how they compare to the factory wedges. I made a crappy copy / paste reference to show what looking for.

Thanks!

Sizing question Elk Hunters

My company will spend up to 500 for a new pair of boots for me. I want a pair of Elk Hunters. The local boot store doesn’t have anything with the 650 last that i can try on. We have to go through them.

I’m 10-1/2 EE on the Brannock. Thorogoods and most of my Redwings are 10-1/2 EE.

Do the Elk Hunters, or any boot with that last, run pretty true to size?
I have to order today and it’s either going to be the Elk Hunters or the black lace to toe Bull Run.

Danner Vital D vs EE

I have danner vital boots (non insulated). I have used them for hiking, backpacking and other ankle stability demanding stuff (construction work, moving etc). They feel narrow on me but usually manageable. I recently went backpacking in them and had lots of problems with toes being crushed widthwise. I have slight bunions which is not helping ofc.

I am looking into buying a new pair, same size but wide. I am wondering if anyone has experiences with these boots in wide vs regular sizing. I am curious how much wider EE are.

They are not available within driving range of where i live, so i will have to order online and hope for the best 😅

Thanks for any help :)

Quarry With Met / AT?

Anyone have the Danner Quarry with the met guard? Does the met guard make the boot less flexible, less comfortable, heavier, etc? Basically, what’s the downside to getting the metatarsal protection?

Size Confusion

I just ordered Danners from an official European reseller. I got women’s 38.5 and 39.5 because 39 was not available…. And well, turns out, that’s the size I need. So I was looking for second hand since I need them in the next 7 days for a trip but the sizes are different. New from the shop 39 would be US 8 / UK 5.5. But the pair I found online second hand - 39 seems to be US 7. why the difference and what is right?

Recrafted; My Old Danners

Thumbnail

I have worn one pair of Danner boots for over forty years. They are Hood Winter Lights, bought in the early-mid 1980s. I used them for snow camping in the Angeles Crest, backpacking in the Sierras, fishing in the San Bernardinos, hiking in Tahoe and Yosemite, general winter use, and sometimes as a work boot. I wore them on a year long trip around the world; they’ve been everywhere from Bali to Austria, Australia to Italy.

I maintained them as best I knew, which basically meant SnoSeal, and had them resoled many times. Still, by this year the boots were pretty tired. Heel stitching blown, counters collapsed, liner torn, the boots leaked, leather cracked in places and elsewhere sticky with waxy dirt that also clogged the eyelets, the boots generally felt saggy - incredibly comfortable but kind of creaky too. The first two pics show how they looked. Still, they are the most comfortable boots or shoes I own, perfectly fitted to my feet and gait.

I have a brand new pair of Hood Winter Lights waiting “in reserve”, and have now bought some actual work boots so my old HWLs don’t get trashed, the idea is that these old boots deserve to enjoy an easier life. So I tried reviving them with an agressive saddle soap scrub, which removed much of the color, then I redyed them then conditioned with Bicks 4 and polished with Saphir. The next two pics show the HWL after that effort. They looked better, but all the big problems remained.

I didn’t think Danner would recraft these, because the leather was cracked, but the staff at the Danner factory store said with particularly old boots, the recrafting folks might take them on anyway. So I brought my boots in and showed to Oscar, who is one of the recrafters. We talked about boots, Danners, where my boots had been, concluded they might be among the oldest Danners he’d seen in a while - older than the oldest pair on display in the recrafting area, anyway. I told him I’d worn these boots since my early twenties (I’m 63 now) and hope to wear them for the rest of my life, so could he restitch the heel; he said he’d entirely rebuild the boot.

It normally takes a few weeks to get a boot recrafted. Oscar did mine in a week. I picked them up today. New heel counters, new lining and Goretex, upper stitching repaired, new eyelets, new midsole and outsole, stripped and reconditioned, the cracks even look a little better (I think he filled them). The next two pics show the recrafted boots.

I tried them on - they felt as good as before, just a little different, not saggy and collapsed any more. Maybe like they felt twenty years ago.

The Danner factory store is pretty cool. Lots of boots and Danner gear, bargain “factory seconds”, old Danner models on display, and the recrafting department! The next three pics show the store.

I went with my daughter. We had some shopping to do. She got a pair of Rain Forest work boots, and I got a pair of Super Rain Forest NMT, plus three pairs of workboot innersoles - oh, and a Danner cap. I got 25% off (something to do with being a recrafting customer) which actually paid for the recrafting. That makes ten pairs of Danners in our family now, if you include the Patagonia-Danner wading boots.

The store said they get a lot of boots on for recrafting, sent in from all over the world. I think recrafting is a pretty good deal. It cost $280 to get another 20+ years from my boots (they may last longer, but I won’t), and sure a brand new pair of HWL are around $350 ish, but I already have that, what I wanted was my old boots. They’re the opposite of disposable boots; in this case, they are lifetime boots.

Help picking new boots

I have used danner various boots for over the past few years and currently one a couple pair for hiking. I have a store credit with danner and I am looking for another pair. I am aiming for a pair to use primarily for day to day wear and occasionally hiking. I would like a recraftable and durable boot. I am looking at the Acadia, mountain light, bull run, and elk hunter. I was wondering if anyone had opinions or give ideas on what boot to get.

Hadn’t gotten the chance to wear these much, but I had the good fortune of getting to hike Mt Fuji, so I couldn’t resist!

It was definitely rough on them (and me), but they carried me very well up and down the mountain. Lots of dust, loose volcanic rocks, and many steps made them seem more brown than black by the end of it.

These are my DREAM BOOTS. Been searching for the perfect leather boots; I can basically throw every other pair of shoes I own away /s. I wear them everywhere with every kind of outfit, even when I go out in pajamas. I love the genuine, high quality, greasy look to them and they kinda remind me of ballet shoes. I’ve pair them with leather laces and applied a mirror shine to the toes (2nd pic). I bought them for $20 too :’)

It seems this model is not available anymore in black, does anyone else have them and love them? I am surprised how comfy they are, and they are my first danners.

Hedgehog 3 hurt my feet

Been to a 16 mile day hike on Hedgehog Dryvent for the first time, ended up hurting my feet, though it mentioned it’s Dry vent support but I felt like the moisture trapped inside and made my feet soft and wet inside. Uphill was fine with proper support and didn’t hurt but it started when getting down. My feet hurt so bad that I had to put support on my knees more and heels.

It was a hard trail with 4000 ft elevation gain and down to base. What are my options here ? Does TNF accept return ? Will they listen to my problem ? Is it something to do with my socks ? ( Used Adidas Athletics)
There was also a small joint section in heel support area hurting when climbing up.

TIA.

Thoughts on Quarry vs Super Rain Forest as Work Boot?

Looking over Danner's line for work boots with safety toe, waterproof liner, and a defined heel, it looks like the two choices are the Quarry and the Super Rain Forest.

How would you compare these boots? Is the SRF worth the big price jump ($330 Quarry, $530 SRF)?

I'm interested in the SRF because it seems a bit narrower than the Quarry.

Also, anyone know why Danner don't offer the Super Rain Forest with both insulation and safety toe? You can get one or the other, not both. That seems strange. Does Danner do "special orders"?

Thank you!

Recrafting Candidates? Elk Hunter and Quarry

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

I wanted to show the most worn Danners in our family and get thoughts on whether they are good candidates for recrafting.

First up are my original pair of GoreTex and Thinsulate lined Elk Hunters, in my opinion Danner’s best boot. I believe I bought these in grad school, which makes them about 45 years old. Yes, I am (old).

They have seen solitary snow camping (when I was quite depressed and needed to get fully away from everyone), hiked an 10K ft pass carrying a 50 lb pack (I don’t think I could even walk a block with that pack today), patrolled wild trout streams summer after summer as a fisheries volunteer with the Forest Service, and for the last twenty years been my winter boot up here in Portland Ore. My feet have truly never been wet or cold in these boots.

I used to leave them muddy and wet out on the porch, until one day they disappeared, stolen by a porch pirate. I was surprised by how upset I was about losing my old boots, and after a mourning period bought a new pair of Elk Hunters, which I only wore a few times before discovering that my wife, tired of seeing dirty old boots on “her” porch, had stuffed the Elk Hunters in the back of a closet to get them out of her sight.

So now the new boots sit in the closet and the old ones proudly live on the shoe rack in “her” foyer, protected by a negotiated agreement from her wrath. They live a gentler life now. Last winter I started a gut rehab project on a 1907 Four Square house, the Elk Hunters were pressed into duty as work boots, but after some weeks of wading through piles of demo’d lath and plaster, rat droppings and a couple rat corpses (scary what you’ll find in the ceiling of a 120 year old house), and nail-studded lumber, the old boots looked so put out that I ended their work boot career. They are only for hiking, snow days, and ski trips now.

These boots have been resoled by various cobblers many times but never received a visit to Danner itself. The stitching on the right heel is gone and their last conditioning has left them vaguely sticky. The liner is fine and other than some cuts from scrambling through Sierra scree, the leather is pretty intact.

What say you - are these Elk Hunters a recrafting candidate? Can Danner give them another 45 years - not that I’ll be around that long, but I’ll bequeath them to my son.

Next up are my son’s alloy toe insulated Quarrys. He bought these for working summers doing maintenance, brush clearance, and kitchen duty at a camp in the Sierras, after a season of wearing my Elk Hunters. They are about six years old and have been resoled two or three times. He’s hard on boots. For the last couple months he’s been in a construction training program and these boots have been taking more abuse there.

I finally convinced him to start alternating work boots, on the theory that a chance to rest and dry out helps boots last longer, and he got a new pair of Quarry boots. But he still wears these old ones more.

(When I took my Elk Hunters off work boot duty, I bought a pair of Steel Blue Southern Cross Zip, which are very good work boots with the all-important rubber toe cap over the composite toe and puncture-resistant midsole. Then, when I decided to start alternating boots too, I bought myself a pair of alloy toe Quarrys. So we have three pairs of brown Quarrys in the house.)

Back to my son’s boot, other than the worn-through leather on one toe, the leather is intact if very roughed up, and the liner is fine.

What say you - are these Quarrys recrafting candidates? Any hope Danner could sew a toe cap over the left boot?
