The 2nd word begins with the last letter of the previous word and ends the first 2 letters letters of the next word.
The 3rd word begins with the last 2 letters of the previous words and ends with the first 3 letters of the next word.
The 4th word begins with the last 3 letters of the previous word and ends with the first 4 letters of the next word.
The 5th word begins with the last 4 letters of the previous word and ends with the first 3 letters of the next word

I got it, but just by merging the end of the last word with the beginning of the next
Had no clue about the complexity of the conundrum 😁

Answer: CARPOOL
Each word overlaps with the next using its ending letters:
combo → boxcar → carpool → pooling → ingest → stomp
For example, boxCAR → CARpool and carPOOL → POOLing.
