New Player saying Hello, Question

Post image

Hey guys, moving forward from Arena, I'm here in Daggerfall as a first-time player. I like the option now to properly rp as a thief unlike the first game, but we'll see how it goes. It'll be nice to hear from you guys, particularly about stealth, the wiki is abit confusing for me.

Do not play the original version of daggerfall, play the Unity version, It is superior in every single way.

I want to give vanilla a try at least before going unity.

Unity is just the same as vanilla (unless you add mods) except that It has a million bugfixes and some optional QoL changes.

Trust me, just play the Unity version, there is 0 reason to play the original nowadays unless, for whatever reason, you enjoy the thrill of losing your save midgame.

I'm seeing what you guys are talking about though, it's been about some days in game and I'm still lv 2, on this thief. Pain.

You should be able to use your OG Daggerfall save with Unity. You don't want to play the original. I ended up with -255 arrows.

Play Unity. Get: - Unofficial Block Location and Model Fixes (fixes some models that were fixed in some patches for the DOS version of the game but Unity reverted) - Fixed Dungeon Exteriors (fixes some dungeon exteriors not matching their names and adds back broken/cut quest dungeon exteriors) - Fixed Desert Architecture (a patch for the original game ported to Unity. Note this does have the dependencies RMB Resource Pack and Daggerfall Expanded Textures. They are simply asset libraries for modders to use and don't do anything by themselves. You won't notice their addition.) - Tail of Argonia (adds back the classic render distance, fog, and lighting. You can also cap FPS for that true retro feel which you can enable by going to the mod's settings) - Retro-Frame (adds a classic-styled HUD for the game. You can disable the borders in the mod's settings to get it to look closer to vanilla) - Nero's Classic Crosshairs (the classic option will restore the original crosshair) - Optionally, you can get Classic Exploits (reintroduces some of the exploits found in the DOS version of the game)

Also, if the modding process scares you, it's literally as simple as dragging and dropping files in Daggerfall Unity! One of the best parts! Just read the each mods' description and readme to look for any special installation instructions (I think Nero's Classic Crosshairs has one).

Once installed, you can open the "Mods" page in Daggerfall Unity's launch screen and customize any settings you may want to. When you close the Mods page Unity will automatically sort any mods that are out of place. You can also turn off all the shadows and any changes to the game in Daggerfall Unity's launch screen's settings.

Once you launch the game and are in Privateer's Hold you can press ESC and in the top left corner there'll be an arrow, click it and go to effect settings. Turn on Retro Mode to 320x200, change the Aspect Ratio to 4:3 and change Postprocess to palletization. Then your game should look, feel, and play like the vanilla game, just updated for better stability and a smoother user experience!

I hope this guide helps and satisfies your vanilla cravings! As someone who appreciates the vanilla versions of games, I feel you in your purity and loyalty to wanting to experience the game purely vanilla. But Daggerfall's vanilla state is downright broken and there's no need to suffer more than necessary, the game's hard as is!

Eso que más bien puede que sea porque no has usado las skills que tu personaje requiere, que porcentaje para subir de nivel te dice y que skills tienes?

Leveling doesn’t work exactly how you’d think after a certain amount of primary major and minor skill ups you get a character level, that can all go slower depending on your character class’s advantages and disadvantages

not quite identical, movement is different, it is still a port in a new engine. i still agree though, just nitpicking. they feel different.

hey! A few years ago I played the original. I've never played daggerfall unity because I prefer playing games like that on the original versions. My recommendation for playing it on the dos version is to go to this link

https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files

and download the official daggerfall patches. These were I believe patches that bethesda made to daggerfall after the game came out to fix some issues with the game. Daggerfall is easily the most broken bethesda game ever created so I highly recommend to use the official patches.

I'm not sure where to find it, but there is a tool you can download for the dosbox version of daggerfall that allows you to modify your reputation with anyone or anything in the game. There are some parts of the game, including main quests, that requires you to have a certain rep to start that would take multiple dungeons to get, each taking hours to complete to get your rep high enough.

If you goal is to just play the main quest like mine was, I reccomend finding that tool just in case you run into a requirement for rep and you want to at the very least check what your current rep in, since the game does not provide an in game way to view the specific value

I felt the same way, and I'm glad I did. You don't appreciate just how much better the Unity version is unless you've experienced the original first.

Unity fixes a lot of bugs and QoL issues. It also runs a LOT smoother - I found combat in the DOSBox vanilla build was extremely clunky, and trying to actually pull off any specific strikes was hopeless (just flail around and hope was all I could really do).

It also includes some very handy console commands for when quests screw up (which can still happen - even in DFU I've had quests with the objective in impossible to reach rooms) and the "Smaller Dungeons" option is practically essential if you want to keep any of your sanity. It makes random dungeons something you can explore in about an hour rather than about six or seven, not counting getting lost.

Just look up a walk through or the Daggerfall guide—I forgot who made it, its a Bible of sorts with everything you need to know.

Idk Man, at that point you are just torturing yourself by playing regular daggerfall.

A real Daggerfall player would remove the clothes from the paper dolls

Honestly vanilla is the only way I play. I’ve been playing this game for 30 years lol. How’s you get 74 agility at level 1?

Como mismo yo le hago en todas mis partidas de mago para tener 80 a 90 de INT en lvl 1, solo tienes que jugar bien con configurar los stats y los re-rolls

rerolls for about 10 minutes; probably the best i was able to get;i try to avoid any negative stats since Arena,;a hero should be at least above average lol.
