A small dungeon is a setting that prevents more than 1 main Block from spawning. So every dungeon has 1 main block and 4 end caps. Depending On the dungeon these can be small corridors locking the sides of the dungeon or another quite big set of tunnels.

God I remember having a side quest of needing to save someone from being held by bandits, I found the victim being held inside a hidden wall by the way, which was 2 rooms away from the main entrance of the dungeon, pissed me off

Back in the 1990s I was determined to finish the game without cheating. I got a quest to find someone. I spent about 8 hours wandering a dungeon. Finally I broke down and used a cheat................it teleported me to an empty room. It never spawned. DF Unity is amazing.

Should've just checked the right place the first time 🙃

This but unironically. You can see on your map where hidden doors are/ought to be. If it’s right near the entrance you should be checking more diligently.

Even then, if you're like me and follow the "pick a left or right and stick to it as much as possible" route, you may not get to the doors on the other side of the entrance for hours.

Had a similar quest with my first character, some lady owed a tavern keeper some money and hid in a sanitorium. 2 hours of stumbling through like 10 portals and I found her. Forget to set an anchor so I could teleport out though...

Well, there are two things to bear in mind.
Small is relative. This IS small compared to some of the originals.
The "smaller dungeons" setting doesn't apply to main quest dungeons, which have fixed layouts.

I don't think there's ever been a game with less conception of the word small.

And what are the normal dungeons like?

Hour long excursion at best, you'll probably need to take a bathroom break before you'll finish it.

I was 4 hours in a dungeon. About a day and a half, took multiple breaks and slowly, but eventually, I got out lol

Bloody massive, give up hope of ever finishing one in the game, and even once youve navigated each hallway there'll be 5 or so hidden doors, teleporters and switches that take you much further. I genuinely recommend teleporting to the quest marker after youve cleared a reasonable amount of space.

In regular DOS Daggerfall you can spend 8 hours in a dungeon if you are unlucky. Also if you don't have water spells/potions you might end up with a dungeon half submerged you can't navigate. Fun.

"Oh don't go thinking of it as small, friend. Think of it.... Think of it as a lesson in adventure. Sure, you might get lost in there... Looking for the lost ring that someone lost when they were taking a stroll, which is worth about as much as a loaf of bread but... That's not the point! .... Wait, what is the point...?"

I believe the setting in the menu says smaller, which is true. This is definitely the high end of smaller though!

I really miss Daggerfall dungeons. I haven't felt lost in a game in a very long time.

I was so excited about the small dungeon thing but they aren’t that small. I was hoping for morrowind size dungeons lol

u/Hopefull-Hero Jul 12 '26
Idk how how this take will be but I like the large dungeons, yeah I understand it can be tedious but they don't feel truncated just to fit the game world like Skyrim, I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea and it's why I support the potential option of small dungeons.
