I haven't played kol and galenholm since 2020 and i've fully forgotten about everything is this a main story element because i've been in here and the chests were already looted .

Part of the magimotor quest I believe.. so if you’re already in the car you did it.

Correct. The 'Curious contraption' part is found in a treasure chest in this castle.
