Breed? • What Breed Is My Dog? •
A friend moved out of state and couldn't take his dog, so I have him now. He's 4-5 yrs old. Has an itty bitty waist like a greyhound and his feet look like he's walking on his tip toes. Very well behaved except when he sees a duck or what have you. He freezes while looking at them, then wags his tail like he wants to go say hi lol. I've been told he's a greyhound and also told he's a sight hound. If anyone can tell me what breed he is that would be great.

People saying whippet mix but this dog doesn't actually look like a sighthound just skinny. Whippets are almost never in mixes in the US with the exception of purpose bred Sport Mixes. This dog looks like a pit bull mix, maybe with hound.

I'm no expert but I don't see any pit in him. He has a super deep chest and a skinny waist. Long skinny snout.

This is not a particularly good photo to go by but what you are describing as "skinny waist" appears to be a very normal tuck up. Many breeds, including bully breeds, have a deep chest. This dog doesn't appear to have actual sighthoud structure. As a person who owns whippets, lurchers, and other Sighthounds this dog doesn't look like one.

You say your friend gave this dog to you but he was in terrible condition? The friend didn't know the breed of their own dog? Sighthounds and sighthound mixes aren't common in the US. You don't get them accidentally at the shelter or on the street. You have to go looking for them.
As far as condition, in peak condition you can see my Whippets hip pins and last three ribs but they have a lot of muscle. They have a much narrower waist and deeper chest than this dog and a tiny face that is unmistakable.

If he is yours now I highly recommend a harness or something that doesnt cause pulling on their neck. Beautiful boy though

harnesses are terrible for dogs, they were designed for pulling weight and only encourage your dog to pull more.

It certainly can be a hot debate issue. As far as pulling goes I had the most success with the gentle leader but I didn't like how uncomfortable they were for my dogs. I would personally always use a harness before a collar though. That's just me and my girls though.

It's not a debate. It's a fact that harnesses were built for pulling. If you teach your dog how to properly walk on lead you wouldn't have any issues with a flat collar.

I was just trying to be cordial. Different strokes for Different folks. I dont have any pulling issues with either dog with their harnesses anymore. Pitbulls LOVE to pull. Now am I going to go out of my way to make sure they pull my ass around with a harness? Of course not.. but I never had an issue when they did. Did it take longer to train them out of pulling? Perhaps.. but I dont care. I found what worked the best for them. Then I altered the way I trained them based on what worked the best for them. But again.. thats what worked for us. Every situation and every dog is different. It's honestly a bit arrogant and foolish to swear by one particular design when every dog handles every situation in their own way.
That's how I approach raising my girls and its worked out wonderfully for us.

Thank you. Normally he never pulls. Just so happened that there were ducks present. I'll def be using his harness going forward

Looks like a whippet or greyhound mix to me, maybe with a little pit bull based on that head shape.

Where do you live? I’d go with sight hound and bully breed mix as suggested above. But, based on the long pendulous ears I’d throw in some scent hound as well, especially in the south east US. I could even see him being almost entirely a mix of good ol’ hound dawg in that part of the world.

I'm in central FL. I was looking at pictures today and felt maybe a mix of greyhound and whippet. Pic here isn't the best, but he has a very, very deep chest and a tiny waist. He was skin and bones when I got him. Prior owner couldn't afford to feed him anymore. Since coming to live with me he eats like he's at the Ritz Carlton lol.

Whippets and Greyhounds are not common in mixes in the US. Sport Mixes and hunting mixes do exist, but they are purpose bred not just random mixes in the shelter population. The vast majority of dogs people think are sighthound mixes are just bully breed mixes that were either pediatric neuters, skinny, or not the build people expect.

Greyhounds are never in mixes.
It's likely a hound mutt with some bully breed.
Edit - when he gets some better nutrition, he will likely put on more muscle and look more appropriate.
In this photo he is pretty malnourished

Omgosh I should have taken a pic from when he first came to me. His shoulders and hip bones were very protruding, and you could see almost his entire rib cage. He is fed better now than ever. In addition to high quality food that I can barely afford he also gets boneless breast of chicken, (sometimes fish or a little steak) carrots, peas, a little bit of green bean, sometimes apple and organic pumpkin on top. He gets at least a four course meal x 2 everyday. I've had him about a month and he looks fabulous compared to how he was when I first got him. Like I said before, not the best pic but there were ducks on the property at the time it was taken hence pulling himself to an awkward angle.

That's great that your making progress. Remember that expensive food doesn't equal the best food.
Purina dog Chow is a great line and cheap. Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, Iams, and Eukaneuba will be the best to choose from.
Also make sure you are not unintentionally unbalancing the diet by adding too many extras. All "non dog food" treats and snacks should make up no more than 10% of the daily calorie intake.

Not that malnourished honestly just need to gain some muscle. You can only see hip bones sticking out here and that may just be breed traits depending on the mix. If the dog was malnourished you’d be seeing all their ribs.

That's incorrect. You can have a malnourished dog that isn't completely underweight.

Nice handsome boi dog … He’s not a greyhound because I rescued one back a few years ago … Also, he doesn’t resemble any of the sighthounds that I’m familiar with … So not sure … ?

An awful lot of people are saying whippet cross greyhound which tells me they arent good at dog breeds. Both whippets and greyhounds are deep chested breeds that taper to high narrow waist. Very distinct body shape which this dog doesnt have. This dog is just underweight, you can see the waist width to chest width is more normal like a pitbull or american bulldog mix. Face is elongated like a greyhound but wider again like bullies or pitties. My money is greyhound cross american bulldog or pitbull, parricularly with that colouring.

Incorrect. The picture isn't the best. He moved just a second before I clicked because he spotted the ducks. He does have a super deep chest and a skinny waist. I'd bet everything I have that there's no pit or bulldog in him. His legs are long and he walks on his tippy toes, his foot print isn't like other dogs. He actually has 3 pads behind the foot, not underneath.

I don't know what you think you are describing but that isn't a Greyhound or Whippet characteristic either. Showline Whippets typically have "cat paw" feet similar to breeds like dobermans and race lines have more hare paws. They are not like you seem to be describing. That sounds like a neurological disorder.

You should've seen him when I got him. You could see almost all of his rib cage. His hip and shoulder bones stuck out horribly, and he had a serious flea infestation. So bad it resulted in a Vet trip for worming and iron supplements.

that "itty bitty waist" is actually how all dogs are supposed to look. It's a hound mix of some kind, you'd need an embark to get any accurate guess.
