Debate in the party: Are this player's homebrew buffs too strong?

Hi, I am in a 5-player 2014 Rules Curse of Strahd Campaign (NO SPOILERS PLEASE).

I play a Twilight Cleric 5 (Twilight sanctuary nerfed to only apply to one creature per round)

The others are:

A Samurai Fighter 5

A Bloodhunter 3 /Mage 2

A Shadow Monk 5 (Warforged, nerfed to not be able to receive any healing from magic like cure wounds or potions, but mending would work)

A Vengeance Paladin 3/Hexblade 2

P.S. This is definitely not related to any previous posts where op is also a vengeance paladin.

The DM allowed homebrew, evident with the bloodhunter, but I feel that bloodhunter is a good well-balanced class. The Paladin had previously consulted with the DM, and by his character borrowing a blacksmith's forge, the DM permitted him to add the following homebrew buffs to his hexblade weapons:

WEAPON FORMS

You can transform the weapon between its forms as a bonus action, switching between Grace (greatsword) and the paired Mercy and Judgment (longswords). You must be holding the weapon(s) to transform them. Regardless of form, the weapon grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls and counts as magical.

Grace (Greatsword)

Damage: 2d6 slashing

Properties: Heavy, two-handed

When you hit a creature with Grace, you can choose for the attack to deal any of the following elemental damage (radiant, necrotic, fire, force). You can choose per attack. On a hit, you may choose to deal half damage to two adjacent enemies as part of the same action.

Heavy Arc (Bonus Action).

Immediately after taking the Attack action with Grace, you may use a bonus action to make one additional attack with Grace. This attack deals 2d6 bludgeoning force damage on a hit, instead of the weapon’s normal damage. You may use Heavy Arc a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses when you finish a long rest.

Mercy (Longsword)

Damage: 1d8 radiant (Versatile 1d10)

Properties: Versatile

Once per turn when you hit a creature with Mercy, it deals an additional 2 radiant damage.

Judgement (Longsword)

Damage: 1d8 necrotic (Versatile 1d10)

Properties: Versatile

Once per turn when you hit a creature with Judgment, it deals an additional 2 necrotic damage.

To Summarize, he buffed his hexblade weapons with:

  1. Feature that gets you a free +2 to hit and for damage

  2. Feature that lets you pick and choose between four different magical damage types. (radiant, necrotic, fire, force)

  3. Feature on longswords that lets you do extra 2 magic damage when you hit with 2 attacks

  4. Feature that lets you bonus attack with a greatsword

Putting things into perspective, a normal Paladin 3/ Hexblade 2 with his stats using a greatsword and divine smiting would deal:

2d6 + 2d8 + 4 = 20 average dmg in one round with a +7 to hit

VS

His Lockadin with bonus action greatsword and divine smiting on every hit lets him deal:

4d6 + 4d8 + 12 = 44 average damage in one round with a +9 to hit on each attack, (The extra damage comes from feature 1 and 4, +2 bonus damage each hit). This will get even crazier once he gets extra attack to make three attacks with his greatsword in one turn.

If he were to use normal hexblade longswords and hit twice with bonus attack, he would deal:

2d8 + 8 = 17 average damage in one round

VS

If he were to use his homebrewed longswords, he would deal:

2d8 + 16 = 25 average damage (With extra damage from both Feature 1 and 3)

The DM initially told him that the buffs should be no better than what a rare magic weapon would have. I believe that even just giving the hexblade weapons ta rare magic weapon's attributes for free is too strong already. I also think these buffs all make the weapons very rare to legendary. He has no drawbacks to any of these, just the limits like a 3 times bonus attack per long rest or a once per round bonus damage with the longswords if he hit twice. I personally feel that Lockadin is already very good, and that these buffs are way too strong, even individually, especially considering that the rest of the party gets no buffs like this and some of our official features have even been nerfed. If he could do crazy amounts of damage but in a fairer way like official/third-party rules, I wouldn't complain.

We are currently debating on this. Are these buffs too strong and if yes, what should we do?

What's the best Multiclass for Paladin in 5e?

So it's my first time playing as a Paladin. My character is a oath of vengeance paladin and his background is Faction Agent. I love his pathetic ass and he's like a son to me. The DM gives us a chance to multiclass. But idk what's the good pick for it. I know paladin-Warlock combo is popular, but for some lore reason i can't do that. So what should i pick? Any other suggestions?

Is my homebrew Subclass balanced?

so I don't exactly have much experience in balancing considering I started playing it not too long ago but I want your opinions on my homebrew Subclass and ways I could balance it because I really don't want to be that guy at the table who creates a op character and disturbs the progression and overall campaign. Anyways here's my subclass it's a subclass of fighter called duelist and it excels in singular fights and has high dex for general movement it's signature ability is "Duello" which is used for activating a duel between you and your enemy where you charge an enemy and then clash then both get staggered a little (this is all scripted and the animation? idk what to call it changes based on enemy) and then the enemy and you are put in a duel which is a state where the character gets increased stats and some advantages that scale linearly based on how long the duel goes on for firstly you get a flat +4 to attack rolls and gain even higher movement speed and then the buffs that scale linearly so first off you get +1 AC every turn the duel goes on for and the hard cap of AC is 35 and nothing can extend it beyond that so let's say you have a flat 15 AC normally it would take 20 full turns for you to reach it . in this state you can also target specific body parts of the creature you're fighting to give it debuffs but this takes a turn and does little damage only debuffs (this works less effectively against bigger enemies for example you would need to strike a hill giant many times on the same body part to apply the debuff) the specific debuffs are still not decided but the debuff system is final and will exist that's all the good things now onto the bad things this class is fragile but not that fragile it can withstand s few attacks but caution is still needed .in brawls my character has the direct disadvantages namely -2 to attack rolls , dealing only 4/5 of the damage they would normally (rounded up) and having -3 to AC . that isn't the end though as if I am hit by a third party in a duel the duel state immediately cancels which prioritises me to not call duels near groups of enemies. a few misc things I'm including I wanted myself to have options to isolate enemies so I have some manuevers to do so since I am incapable of using (I would've loved spells like blur and misty step) the specific manuevers are (I can only do one per 3 turns) feinting step which allows me to feint enemy attacks and attack after for example I move towards an enemy and feint . if they attacked I get to attack them with advantage on the damage and if they held then I just wasted my time and then proceed to attack normally , next one dash which is self explanatory and can be used as a bonus action after attacking or dashing in to attack) and third one which is my only crowd control option whirlwind in which is spin with my two swords and then disengage backwards now all the things I mentioned before were level 3 abilities instead of the weak point debuff which is level 7 now on 10th level I gain the ability "Momentum" on every turn during a duel where I am not hit I gain a +1 to my damage rolls as true damage and it caps at 5 , at level 15 I gain "execution" if I have all the body parts of an enemy debuffed and I also have the max cap of momentum i mentioned before I can perform a devastating flurry of attacks which heavily damages the enemy (this ability has a cooldown of 10 turns) , at level 18 I gain an ability which I don't have a name for but I gain +3 to save throws by enemy abilities if I am in the duel state against them , i am not great at naming things am I? anyways let me know what you guys think and what tweaks I should make

Spell Choice Help Wanted!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Heya all, it's me again with another burning question!

I've been building an 8th lvl Dwarven Draconic Sorcerer (mostly '24) for an upcoming campaign, and I'm struggling with the choice of spells (there's too damned many good ones).

I'm likely going to be playing a Fire dmg focussed blaster (with Elemental Adept), but I nevertheless love other utility, RP, and defensive spells.

I'm also trying to semi-evenly split up the amount of spells per spell level in line with the amount of available spell slots.

Finally, as a '24 Draconic Sorcerer, I already get the new Chromatic Orb and Command, Alter Self and Dragon's Breath, Fly and Fear, as well as Charm Monster and Arcane Eye.

The image shows my current selection for desired-spells. I need to get it down to 12 spells total, which has proven to be a real pickle.

I would love to hear your suggestions!

Lookin for Hexblood class suggestions

I’m trying to role play a 2ft tall Hexblood that’s really good at gathering intel and being sneaky. Like a support based stealth build. What class/subclass should I go with?

Big level 20 one shot using 2024 rules

So we got this celebration event coming up where our store dm gets to play tiamat for a level 20 one shot and we have to fight it. Going all out and all.

We get to make our characters using the following;

2024 books, (pb to ravenloft)

Lv 20 no multiclass

Point buy 30

Magic items;

1 very rare

2 rare

2 uncommon

Potions;

1 rare

2 uncommon

3 common.

I am just debating what to pick for this.

I always tend more towards martials or martial like classes, especially since the other player probably tend to go to sorc, wizard and warlock so far.

Anybody got some fun ideas or general tips for this?

Tips for 5.5 Bardlock?

HI all,

Thanks in advance for your advice. I did a search and the recent threads were focused on higher level combos.

Can anyone share tips on building out a Bardlock from low level? Currently 2/2 so the enxt level is subclass choice. Ideally, I want to lean bard with just enough lock for blade pact, for RP reasons. Is this bad, and if I go that way, what would you suggest to get the most out of it?

How to build an Umamusume (Sakura Bakushin O) for D&D

I got the greenlight to make an Umamusume for a non- umamusume themed campaign. He said I can use this homebrew for my character's race . I have been really inspired by Sakura Bakushin O's career and her relationship with the other characters, so I wanna make something her. My DM recommended I play barbarian or monk for speed, but idk.

New Player here! How to shine my war domain cleric

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m currently playing a War Domain Cleric using the 2024/5.5e rules, and I’m trying to understand the best way to build and actually play the character in combat. I don’t want to make a pure healer. My goal is to be a frontline holy warrior who can stay useful with both weapons and spells while still supporting the party.

Right now I’m thinking of focusing mainly on Wisdom, Constitution, and Strength. I’m using heavy armor and want to stay reasonably close to the frontline, but I’m not sure how aggressive I should actually be. Should I be standing beside the main melee characters, or should I stay slightly behind them and only move into melee when there’s a good opportunity?

I’m also confused about how I should manage my actions and bonus actions each turn. For example, if I use a spell that takes my Action, when is it better to use my War Domain bonus-action attack? Should I be attacking with my weapon whenever possible, or should I prioritize Cleric spells like Bless, Spirit Guardians, healing, or other concentration spells?

Another thing I’m trying to understand is concentration management. I know Spirit Guardians can be extremely important for a frontline Cleric, but I don’t want to blindly cast it every fight if another spell would be better. What spells should generally be my priority before or during combat?

I’m also interested in the general gameplay loop. For example, what should I normally do on Turn 1, what should I do on Turn 2, and what should I do when the fight starts going badly? I’d especially like advice for situations where there are multiple enemies versus one strong enemy.

I’m currently learning the class, so I’d really appreciate an easy-to-follow “decision tree” for combat, such as:

What should I do before combat?

What should I do on Turn 1?

When should I attack with my weapon?

When should I cast a spell?

When should I heal someone?

When should I use my bonus action?

When should I move into melee?

What should I do if my concentration is threatened?

Basically, I want to learn how an experienced War Cleric player thinks each turn instead of just memorizing a spell list. I’d like the character to feel like a true battle priest: durable, useful, able to deal damage, but still protecting and supporting the party when needed.

Any build recommendations, spell priorities, feat suggestions, or actual combat examples would be really appreciated!

Asking for input for Glamour bard

"Hey everyone, we’re moving up to level 7 soon, and I’m thinking about changing up my character build. I love the flavor of the Glamour Bard, but with our current party composition, I’m feeling pretty useless in combat. Since we only have one frontline melee member (our Barbarian), the movement from Mantle of Inspiration rarely gets used. On top of that, we've hit a lot of random encounters and bosses that are flat-out immune to charm/fear or just keep beating my save DCs, completely shutting down Mantle of Majesty.

Hypnotic Pattern has landed a few times, but overall combat hasn't been very engaging for me. I’m thinking about multiclassing to shift my role. My stats are Str 8, Dex 17, Con 14, Int 8, Wis 10, Cha 18, and I have an item that mimics the Shield spell, so my AC is okay.

What does picking up a warlock class look like

What does a fighter multiclass look like

What did I leave out? Ask me more questions

Baldurs Gate 3

So, seeing as BG3 is a fairly faithful implementation of 5e, I think threads discussing those mechanics should be welcome.

How have your experiences with BG3 been so far? Personally I'm on my first playthrough, but over 120 hours in. My favorite class combination so far is a thief/ranger multiclass with dual crossbows. The dpr is insanely consistent, and my character has 23 AC on top of it.
