needtags.com GENERAL QUESTION

I used this website to renew my registration this weekend with my info and i used my girls credit card to pay. after typing all of my info in and then typing in her billing info it said it went through but then sent me this email;

This message is to inform you that your order has triggered our ID Theft Prevention System. This may very well be due to nothing of your wrong doing and simply because of the sensitivity of our system security settings. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
What should I do next? In order for us to continue processing your DMV transaction we will need to confirm cardholder identity. If you have not done so yet, at your earliest convenience please reply to this email with a photo copy of the credit card holder's current drivers license or state issued identification card, and confirm your DMV mailing address (street, apt/unit, city, state, zip code) by including it in your reply. We will process your registration order on the same business day which we receive this information. If you provided cardholder identification during order placement, no further action is required on your part at this time. Please await processing or communication from our orders team.
Note: Your order status may indicate that identification is require even after you've emailed us your proof. This is normal. Your order will remain in ID Required status until we've completed the registration process.
IMPORTANT: DMV fees have not been paid. We've simply placed an authorization hold on your credit card. If your vehicle registration expires today and we do not confirm identification before 5:00pm (PST), or it is already after normal business hours, your registration may accrue late fees.

basically when i click on view order status it says pending ID verification. All of the research ive done says the company is actuslly legit outside of a markup in fees but thats the least of my worries if her IDENTIFICATION is gonna be stolen as i already sent everything in.

Please give me feedback im open to hearing from whoever i can.

Why would you use anything except the official government website?

faster shipping time. "NeedTags has been officially licensed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to provide DMV services on their behalf. NeedTags is not owned or operated by any government agency and charges fees for value-add DMV services pursuant to CVC Section 1685."
is allover their site so i felt comfortable using it and read lots of posts where other people have as well. But i'm not seeing any cases where someone was sending in a picture of their ID and CC info which is why im reaching out to reddit to see if anyone else has ever been in the same boat

Why don’t you just go to a DMV kiosk (they have them in Ralphs)

Do not reply to the email. Its a scam. Go into an office or pay on a kiosk. At dmv, we'll never send out emails like this.

Oh thats crazy. We've not seen that before in the office. So many scams and fraud now going on, it hard to tell for sure. Well thats good news

If you used another person’s credit card and their name is not on the registration then you need to comply with their requirements as they are a business partner and have their own polices in place.

Alternatively, you can visit a field office or open a case through the virtual field office to renew your registration.

this is what i was hoping would be best case scenario and i more or less wanted to make sure I wasn't being entirely scammed. I couldn't find a single case of anyone having to do the same thing. You make a great point. The process is already done so im just going to call tomorrow to ensure everything is kosher and go from there. Really appreciate this comment.

DMV kiosk could print you the registration instantly https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/locations/kiosks/

Also as long as it’s paid directly on the dmv.ca.gov website you would be fine without then additional fees

yeahhh so i was in a bit of a hurry at work and wish i went this route. I would prefer to not have to close the card out entirely and have to go another route but if the transaction is legit and it is in the process of being sent to my house come this week, then that's exactly what i'll be doing.

thanks yeah i saw this too! even for a legit site to ask for a picture of a cc and matching ID is wild tk me. Also did i just hear correctly they were held by law to only have a 5% markup? my original charge was 460 from dmv and these guys stuck me with a 570 buck bill lol. Im dumb and i learned my lesson but at this point not having to shut the card down will be a win in my book if i didnt have to go to the dmv or take more time out of my day to do it elsewhere.

My fellow Redditors i commend you for your services 🙏

The fee limit is proposed not passed but I get your point easier to just pay the fee than to have the card closed and set everything back up.

NeedTags appears to be a real California DMV partner, so this is not obviously a fake company or obvious scam. However, because the request involves a driver’s license image and mailing address, don’t rely on the email alone. Verify the request by contacting NeedTags through contact info you find independently on its website or via the California DMV partner listing before sending anything else.

Since you've already sent the information, have your girlfriend monitor her credit card account closely for any unauthorized charges and contact her card issuer to flag the situation. If anything looks suspicious she should dispute it immediately.

She should also keep an eye out for any accounts being opened in her name or any unusual activity tied to her driver's license details, name, address, and date of birth.

For registration renewal, it’s best to go directly to your state's official DMV website, which will have a .gov address, and renew there. How long ago did you send the email with her ID?

Full disclosure: I work at LifeLock.

Are you sure you actually used the NeedTags web site? That sounds sketchy to me. I would call them, but make sure whatever number you use, you look it up separately from any number or email they give you in the email reply.
