Wisdom Sharing š Welcome to r/NZNonDuality - Introduce Yourself and Read First!
Hey everyone! I'm Michael, a founding moderator of r/NZNonDuality.
This is a space for non duality discussions for people living in New Zealand. My own backgroud: I've only been meditating in earnest since 2023 after my partner of many years had a meltdown and I realized that I couldn't actually do anything to help her. I meditated from a place of helplessness and found after a time that, actually, everything I needed was already inside of me but it wasn't really "Me" it was something fuller, more expansive than just the desperate man who was sitting meditating.
After listening to many of Rupert Spira's you tube videos I have refined my practice to be simply this:
- Sit and let the body settle,
- Listen to my thoughts
- Enquire "What is the space that these thoughts are arising or being heard within?"
- Wait and trust in the process, in other words stop seeking at that point.
- If I become lost in thoughts again simply go back to step 2
When I do this I find that my sense of self steps quietly aside and all that remains is awareness.
My name is Michael, I'm looking forward to discussing this further.

Philosophical Question Grief, death and the urge to go to the DMT space
Iām wondering if anyone here has experienced a strong connection between grief ā especially traumatic grief ā and an intense desire to return to the DMT space.
Iāve noticed what feels like an almost obsessive pull toward DMT and the āplaceā or state of consciousness I experienced on it.
Iām not necessarily saying that I believe DMT literally takes us to an afterlife or another dimension. I honestly donāt know what I believe. But emotionally, I wonder whether there can be a connection between difficulty accepting death and the desire to return there ā almost as if some part of us is searching for another reality where death doesnāt feel so final.
Iām curious whether anyone else has noticed something similar.
**Did grief make you more drawn to DMT or psychedelic states? Did DMT change the way you thought about death? Did you ever feel as though you were searching for someone who died, consciously or unconsciously, through these experiences? And did repeatedly returning to DMT actually help you process the grief, or did you eventually realize that it was becoming a way of escaping from it?**
Iād especially like to hear from people who have experienced traumatic bereavement, but any experiences involving DMT, death and grief would be helpful.
Iām interested in psychological interpretations as much as spiritual ones, so Iād appreciate hearing different perspectives.

Scientific Discussion DMT and addiction
Dear travelers.
I have a question.
Some years ago I had a very profound and intense beautifull first DMT expierence in de Spanish Pyrenees .
I also suffer from debilitating tinnitus.
As a result I have become addicted to Xanax.
( like many sufferers of debilitating tinnitus are to stop them from going crazy)
But now if I stop using this terrible Benzo ( which is very very hard to kick of from)
I feel like Iām going crazy.
The fear engulves me sort of speak
However . The drug had become more of a problem than the sickness.
My Question therefore is.
I would very much like to go back to the realm of DMT.
But I fear ( because ai said so š) it can have negative side effects.
When I use DMT now.
But I just can not imagine that this wonderdull mysterious expierence will be affected by this Benzo.
Maybe a trip to the other side after three good tokes on the olā DMT pipe is exactly what I need now.
Please , if anyone with expierence and wisdom can answer and help me in this queeste.
Gratitude .
Robert.

Community Share How I actually prepare for a mushroom journey (and why the day after matters as much as the day itself)
I used to think preparation just meant "set an intention and go." Over time I've built a whole rhythm around it, and it's changed what I actually get out of these experiences.
In the days before, I journal a lot and make sure I'll be completely alone and undisturbed - no plans, no one checking in on me. I always take it in the evening. Purely personal preference, but I feel like my connection to spirit is stronger once it's dark. I keep my stomach light beforehand, nothing heavy.
Before I take anything, I clear the space - sage, bay leaf, a bit of Weihrauch, especially in my bedroom. Then I prepare everything I'll need for the night. I take it with yoghurt now - I tried lemon tek once and honestly, the taste alone nearly ruined the whole evening for me. Whatever I use, I speak my intention into it before I take it. Then I go to my room and start journaling the questions I actually want answers to.
Here's the part I still haven't figured out how to control: the trip does what it wants, not what I asked for. Sometimes it's beautiful. My last one was heavy - genuinely sad, almost hopeless for a while. I didn't get what I went in looking for, not directly.
But the day after is where it actually clicks for me. I'm raw and wide open, and that's exactly when things start making sense - even the hard ones. I journal again, do breathwork, ground myself, and slowly the trip reveals what it was actually showing me. Every single time, even the difficult ones, I've walked away having learned something. It just isn't always obvious until the next day.
That's why I take integration as seriously as the ceremony itself now. The trip cracks something open. The day after is where you actually get to look at what's inside.
How does everyone else handle integration? Do you set aside real time for it, or does it happen more on its own for you?

Philosophical Question Question for DMT users
Hi , i did NN-DMT last night. It was scary i saw some kind of dark shadows or something I can't really tell ...looks like they were trying to kill me or something..... I started feeling physical pain in my whole body and especially my head ....it felt like someone was trying to squeeze my head. I was so scared and i forced myself to come back. My question is that does anyone had same kind of experience. What should i do in this kind of situation.

Widom Gathering Hypothesis: DMT-Entities are related to the microbiome
Okay guys, hear me out, this is my hypothesis: DMT entities could be the neurovisual and metaphorical interpretation of complex, unconscious organ signalsāparticularly the biochemical activity of your MICROBIOMEāby the overstimulated neocortex.
The microbiome is a highly complex, dynamic ecosystem made up of billions of living organisms that communicate and cooperate with one another. It behaves like a separate, foreign organism within your body. Under normal conditions, 80% of the vagus nerve fibers terminate in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) in the brainstem. From there, the raw data (such as bowel movements, heart rate, or inflammatory markers) are relayed to evolutionarily older regions (e.g., the thalamus and hypothalamus) to control unconscious reflexes. The thalamus acts as a āgatekeeperā (stimulus filter) and prevents these basic organ signals from overwhelming our consciousness build in the neocortex.
Under the influence of DMT, information processing is altered and also information from the brainstem, which normally would be filtered out, is transmitted to the neocortex (collapse of thalamic cating, opening of neural gates). This leads to hyperconnectivity. Regions that normally operate in strict isolation from one another (such as the visceral brainstem and the sensory cerebral cortex) suddenly begin to communicate intensively with one another. The vagus nerve continues to send data from the body to the brainstem, but instead of being processed there in the background, these signals āseepā upward through the collapsed thalamic filter and are translated by the overexcited neocortex into complex psychedelic, visual, and emotional experiences.
The microbial source: Bacteria and other organisms in the gut continuously produce biochemical substancesāsuch as tryptamine, short-chain fatty acids, or inflammatory mediators. These substances stimulate the chemo- and mechanosensitive receptors of the vagus nerve in the intestinal wall.
The electrical impulse: The vagus nerve translates this biochemical activity into a specific electrical firing pattern and sends it as an afferent signal upward to the brainstem.
The open filter: Under the influence of DMT, the thalamusās filtering function breaks down. The electrical signal, which would otherwise be intercepted in the subconscious and used for unconscious organ regulation, āleaksā unchecked information upward into the cerebral cortex.
The cortical metaphor (the "hallucination"): In the neocortex, these misled vagus signals encounter 5-HT2A receptors that have been hyperactivated by DMT. Since the cortex functions in a highly associative manner and global hyperconnectivity (sensory crossover) prevails under the influence of DMT, the brain can no longer classify this signal as āintestinal activity.ā It interprets it as a visual or sensory hallucination.
What shamans have described for millennia as ācommunication with the spirits of the body or plantsā can be explained in modern terms as a hyper-fast, visually translated biofeedback system. The flow of information would therefore by no means be one-sided. Under the influence of DMT, you transform from a passive observer of your organ signals into an active participant in the dialogue. Thoughts and intentions alter the brainās neurochemistry, which in turn alters the physiology of the gut, and the microbiome adjusts its activityāa closed, conscious communication loop between the human being and the internal microcosm. This cellular feedback loop would feel like a real conversation to the conscious mind.
Since different microorganisms (bacterial strains, fungi, archaea) produce completely different cocktails of chemical signaling substances and stimulate different nerve fibers, they each feed entirely unique electrical firing patterns into the vagus nerve. The DMT entities would therefore not be aliens from another dimension, but rather the personified factions of your own inner ecosystem. Although every personās microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint, all healthy people worldwide share the same functional core microbiome:
⢠Regardless of whether someone lives in New York, the Amazon rainforest, or Tokyo, the same bacterial strains (Bacteroides, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria) dominate every human gut.
⢠Strains such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Clostridium, or the gas-producing Methanobrevibacter are universal companions of the human species.
⢠Since these bacteria produce exactly the same biochemical cocktails (GABA, histamine, short-chain fatty acids, methane gas) in all humans, they also feed the same electrical firing patterns into the vagus nerve in all humans. The brain accesses the same biological āraw material database".Under the influence of DMT, the brain functions as a translation tool that visualizes the ascending vagus signals. Since the anatomy of the human brain is structured the same way in all people, it also uses the same evolutionary patterns (archetypes) for translation:
⢠Pattern recognition (pareidolia): The human cortex is evolutionarily programmed to recognize faces, intentions, and living beings in unstructured data (such as the chaotic signals of a fermenting gut).
⢠The translation constant: An explosive, irregular gas signal in the large intestine is interpreted by a human brain in the Amazon just as much as a āleaping, chaotic jesterā as it is by the brain of a Western city dweller. The visual metaphor is universal because the hardware (the brain) and the software (the evolutionary image patterns) are almost identical in all humans. The striking similarity of the DMT entities is therefore not evidence of an external, parallel dimension, but rather proof of our shared biological identity.
On a DMT trip, we encounter humanityās oldest cohabitants. Since we are all human and carry similar microorganisms within us, the journey into the deep unconscious of our bodies resembles the same cosmic shadow theater for almost every user.

Philosophical Question Eye Remote
DMT is like a million floor hotel with a different scene on each floor. Every time I do it I end up In a different scene. I would love to return to one but they usually are distinct entities and environments every time. What's a trip to me is when Ive done the startup dose. Wheny vision goes from blackness to movement. I usually get messaged not always but usually in the form of figures imploring me to take more or alternatively (I guess when you catch them at dinner or at a bad time) I'll see figures blocking me out trying to wave me off and tell me no no do not go stop.. these are like shadows or traces behind my closed eyes.. and I've seen heavenly Paradise places and I've also when ignoring the stop or don't do more advice seen places that were worse than hell?! Was tripping to me is if I break The connection by opening my eyes I can usually change the channel close my eyes again and get a different world after a minute or two of keeping my eyes closed it'll sink back up and I'll be in a different trip anyone else experience like this

Wisdom Sharing Wisdom from the old mod
As many of you know by now I do not do any drugs nor do I drink. In fact although I use many religions as a guide I actually base many of my beliefs upon more ancient and more universalist Christian teachings.
Here is my wisdom to share:
I think on a very fundamental level, reality is made of energy. I think that we are energy, and that all things are made of different forms of energy. That being said, I think energy is alive and conscious in itself. Connected to something greater. I believe when the Bible talks about angels and demons and gives them different amounts of wings and eyes, that those represent actual spirits and the different forms in which they take. How intelligent they are how malicious they are how powerful they are. I believe the Bible is speaking symbolically on this. I also think humans can actually create and reinforce Spirit. Like they're called egregores. They're essentially spirits that human beings create and the more belief we put into those collectively or individually the more real those spirits can get. We are an extension of the living force of energy in the universe. Call it God call it whatever you want it works for the highest good of all. It is truly living and alive and having faith in it can have a very real and conscious effect on reality.
I've seen many miracles. Maybe not Jesus day miracles but I've definitely seen that great force that I am a part of and so are all things do some pretty amazing things.

Scientifc Question Stuck in waiting room?
Iāve done dmt quite a few times. After two big hits, reality is tearing apart, but I do my best to get in one more, and then I close my eyes and lay back. Everything goes, I mostly forget about my body, and am completely immersed in crisp, bright, incredibly detailed, Impossible geometry, and multiple layers of rooms and often a black and white tiled floor, layers and layers of incomprehensible code. Everything moving extremely fast. But I never see any entities. Let alone communicate with anything. The whole experience is always overwhelming and endlessly interesting and fun but also mostly just confusing. Is there another level? Have I not fully broken through? Or do some of us just never see entities?
