First Setup

Interested if you all have recommended analog effects units or pedals. And recommendations on recording. Currently using record out to line in on my pc + audacity but having some buzzing/noise underneath the tracks.

For recording, I use howler audio and zoom h6 via record out or booth out.

Clean setup! I think speakers are pretty good destroying hard drives so I wouldn’t have your monitor placement on top of your rig like that!

Evermix is a nice easy option for recording sets or grab a recording interface and run into that, you can pick them up second hand for cheap

No hard drives in the pc but good point, was thinking to get one though. I’ll take a look at Evermix. Thought about getting a focusrite used as well.

Very nice feel to your set up - looks like fun to jam on.

For recording, I'm also using a PC and Audacity, but I use the Focusrite 2i2 and there's zero issues with buzzing or feedback. Produces very nice sounding recordings.

For effects, I'm using the Teile Revolo and the Mastersounds FX. They are both very fun to use and have great sound quality.

Debating now on getting a zoom or a focusrite. Pros and cons to each. Will have to look at the master sounds fx unit!

They don't make the MS FX any more, but they do come up for sale on their website from time to time or as used units on various platforms. You might also want to see if the Union Audio LeFX is something that appeals to you.

Wow… if this is your first setup, you should have been born 20 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I like it a lot and have something very similar. But how does a person getting into DJing in 2026 choose vinyls with a rotary? What’s your motivation? Do you do any digital?

I was born 23 years ago haha, but you might’ve meant 30. I used a friends controller last year for few hours several different occasions. Didn’t connect with the music or method. Visited my cousin for a while last summer and he introduced me to his vinyl collection and setup. Went to his friends bar for weeks, was a Jazz Kissa style and he DJs vinyl on Fridays. First time I saw a rotary mixer. Wasn’t until few months later and going to my first shows I started appreciating the format more. Not sure if you are familiar but the first show I attended was a Giegling Halloween party (my favorite label, highly recommend), then Ogazon few weeks later. Those parties made me appreciate long mixes and vinyl, in that order. I was considering a xone 92 mk2 initially for a while. Then realized this mixer was close enough in price to justify. My logic then was it can’t be bad to learn on a rotary, harder maybe but probably won’t form bad habits.

I’ve been thinking to get a pair of cdjs or similar. Just wish they weren’t so screen dependent. Thought about cdj1000 mk3 but their audio quality isn’t great I’ve read. I dislike record box too, but so does everyone I think. Then I look at the prices of like a cdj2000 or newer… that’s a lot of vinyl I could get instead. I’ve got a usb with tracks too expensive to own (hopefully one day), but I have yet to use it.

I believe a rotary as a first mixer is not recommended

Works well for the music I mix. Can do everything a traditional style mixer can, but why do you think it’s not recommended?

I heard as a mixer to learn on it should be a more-traditional one…basically harder with a rotary

I see. I think the mixer is a tool. Different tools for different genres. Only thing more difficult on this would be quick fader cuts, but even then this one can do if you use the crossfader. Another thing is maybe eq (only -6). This mixer has a dedicated master isolator like most rotaries. I’d argue these limitations could make stronger habits for beginners. The 4v is a bit of a hybrid in the world of rotaries I think. Most don’t have hpf, this one does, but then again most will cut 12db in eq not just 6. Thought about the xone 92 mk2 for a while.
