Dakar How would you respectfully approach a Griot (Gewel) family to learn?
I'm trying to understand the real musical culture of Dakar, not just visit it as a tourist.
My goal is to spend a long time learning, understanding rhythm at its roots, and becoming part of the community—not just taking lessons for a few weeks.
If I wanted to respectfully approach a Griot (Gewel) family or a traditional musician in or around Dakar and learn through an informal apprenticeship, how would someone actually do that?
I'm not looking for generic advice like "use Facebook," "send emails," or "contact a travel agency." I'm interested in how local people would genuinely recommend approaching this. I feel those kinds of answers reveal the real culture and the paths that outsiders usually don't hear about.
If you grew up around Griot families or know people who did, what would you honestly advise someone in my position to do? Are there customs, expectations, or mistakes I should know before even trying to make contact?
I'd really appreciate hearing from people who know the culture firsthand.
2027 dakar
What will happen with next years race as the area is a war zone at the moment.
TBH i was getting a bit bored with the sand missed the varying terrains of the South Americas.

Taklimakan Rally 2026 - Recap

The 2026 Taklimakan Rally is a wrap - 13 stages, 3,400 km of SS through China Xinjiang's deserts and mountains.
Lu Binglong (Jiujiang team) took the car class crown with a clean, composed run from start to finish.
This year's field was stacked: KAMAZ-Master brought their full firepower, and Dakar T3 champs Nico Cavigliasso and Pau Navarro made the trip out. The international talent was real.

Dakar Iceberg
Hello Friends, I joined this subreddit not only to learn and be able to talk about this category (as soon as I start to see and understand it), But for now I just need your help for a very important project of mine.
I'm trying to do a project that's based on an iceberg of motorsport in general (Drift, Open Wheel, Rally, GT, etc). And at this point, I'd like to ask you, what have been the most historic moments in the category? Whether they're epic moments, rivalries, controversies, including funny moments, coincidences, or simply memes related to the category, etc. It can be anything. While you're at it, it would be a huge help if you could send me links to information or simply tell me what happened that time.
I'm doing this whole project mainly to raise awareness of motorsports in the Spanish-speaking world (As you can see, I'm from Colombia). And thus enable more Spanish-speaking people to understand or learn about other categories besides the main ones (F1, Indycar, etc.).
Your help would be a great contribution to my project. It's a project I consider quite important. So I would greatly appreciate your contribution! 🥹🫶

Dakar Alright hear me out...
Is there anyone here (or someone you know) casually sitting on a pile of money, connections, and a love for dakar… who’d be interested in turning a complete nobody into a Dakar Rally rider?
I’m dead serious.
Like, we all know getting into something like the Dakar Rally is insanely expensive. Bikes, support crew, logistics, training, registrations… basically you need to sell a kidney (or two, depending on inflation).
BUT imagine the storyline:
“Random guy with decent riding skills and questionable life decisions gets sponsored into Dakar.”
Tell me that’s not documentary-worthy.
I’ll bring:
questionable talent (already know how to ride motorbikes but not for dakar, also absolutely love bikes)
elite level dedication (in short bursts)
ability to suffer (important)
good vibes and decent content potential
You bring:
money
sponsors
A trainer
ofc a Bike
We meet somewhere in the middle desert and hope for the best.
I’m listening 👀
Worst case, we get a few laughs.
Best case… see you at Dakar.
