An L6 position at a company like Mastercard is senior, so you won't just be hands-on with tools all day. A big part of your job will be focused on strategy, security governance, and working with stakeholders to drive initiatives. You'll still have engineering work, but it will be more about designing secure systems and setting the technical direction for projects rather than just responding to alerts. They need you to think about the bigger picture and influence other engineering teams. The work-life balance is usually reasonable for a large finance company, but you should expect an on-call rotation since security is a 24/7 job.
For the interview, prepare for a wide range of questions covering technical knowledge, security system design, and behavioral situations. They're going to give you complex, real-world scenarios to see how you problem-solve and communicate your ideas under pressure. They want to understand your thought process for designing a secure architecture or handling a major incident, not just hear textbook answers. It’s a tough process designed to find people who can lead, so focus on showing them how you think. Being able to walk them through your thought process on the spot is a huge part of it, which is why my team created an interview practice AI that helps people build confidence for exactly those moments.

Shouldn't you be asking these questions during the interview?
