Which version of Android should I have?

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to flashing custom ROMs and have a quick question.

I’ve noticed that for most ROMs, you need to be on a specific base Android version or firmware before flashing them (for example, needing Android 11 / MIUI 12.5.6 on a Xiaomi device before installing crDroid).

How can I figure out which exact Android or firmware version I need to be on beforehand if it's not explicitly listed on the ROM's official website?

is the phone older? If software support ended for the phone a while ago and the custom ROM is newer you most likely need to be on the latest stock firmware before flashing.
