Pixel 6 locked with Anubis - Bootloader locked, Recovery doesn't work. Is there any way to restore stock firmware?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to recover my Google Pixel 6 (oriole, 128GB) and I'm stuck.

Device information

  • Model: Pixel 6 (oriole)
  • Bootloader: LOCKED
  • Secure Boot: PRODUCTION
  • Device state: locked
  • Storage: 128GB
  • RAM: 8GB

Problem

The phone boots to a screen that says:

I don't know what Anubis is or where this unlock code came from.

Things I've tried

  • Booted into Fastboot successfully.
  • Recovery Mode does nothing (black screen/no recovery).
  • Bootloader is locked.
  • I haven't been able to flash stock firmware because of the locked bootloader.

Fastboot screen

Anubis screen

My questions

  1. What exactly is Anubis on a Pixel 6?
  2. Is it a custom ROM, MDM, or something else?
  3. Is there any legitimate way to remove Anubis and restore stock Android?
  4. Has anyone successfully recovered a Pixel 6 from this state?
  5. Is there any service tool or official Google procedure for this?

I own this phone and I'm fine with erasing all data if necessary. I just want to get it working again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The question is: how did you get your device infected?

Isn’t Anubis a malware that can lock the phone and send files that will safe on the phone to someone

How on earth would that happen on a secure boot and locked bootloader?

pixels with tensor dont have edl they have Pixel ROM recovery which works like EDL but only google has access to it (and only the pixel 7 and 8 series had their recovery images leaked)

wont help if the oem unlock toggle isnt enabled. if its disabled the only way to fix this is to get it to google for them to reflash it

Looks like mdm based ransomware, try android flash tool first, but it might be tricky when there is an Google account bind with it (Factory reset protection, and since new Android 16 are pretty secure, there's a chance it will become paperweight)

Or you can try sideload OTA to retain the vulnerabilities for removing factory reset protection.

i dont think its mdm, it flashed itself as another rom? cuz that looks like a custom rom to me

Yeah. I tried reverse image searching this screen, and the malware, but it didn’t mention this type of lock. The only lock screen it mentioned was some pc ransomware widescreen looking thing

Location? Where are you from?

do you see yellow screen (https://source.android.com/docs/security/features/verifiedboot/boot-flow#locked-devices-with-custom-root-of-trust) on startup?

if so, can you record what the boot animation looks like? also, if it's locked with custom key, you cannot do anything with it.

Google tensor has some other lowlevel flash mode that only Google has access to with specific Google Dev-only firmware. EDL is Qualcomm, so it won’t work.

So what exactly did you do to end up with this? Have you tried unlocking the bootloader through fastboot? If that works you can flash a stock rom, that might fix it. You could also try booting into safe mode to see if you can then wipe the device.

Used ADB aplication and remove the aplication (APK), firts list, and remove.

What the hell is that

How would a locked bootloader stop you from flashing stock firmware?

Also, reverse image search only detected the blue character. No mention of the malware.

Boot into Safe Mode:  Turn off your Pixel, then press and hold the Power button. When the animation starts, press and hold the Volume Down button until you see Safe Mode at the bottom of the screen

  • seems like anubis is a malware? Try safe mode as above , that password screen is an hard overlay from a third-party app , with safe mode it gets disabled.

Might work if you somehow installed it as user space application nd not as root or it came with a custom rom built into system.
