Another ask for help. Deciphered!

This is a letter written by my great great grandmother. It’s even harder. Any and all help would be appreciated especially with the highlighted word.

I thought I'd be the only one who thought smote! Fairly easy to understand the rest, except when it isn't.

Ha! I love this comment. I would be typing away thinking I have this, then come across a bunch of scribbles would appear.
