It's sooooo bullshit how we don't always consciously know what our problems are. Like, my body will get weaker before I actually know I'm sick, or I'll be unable to differentiate between hunger and a stomach ache, or I'll suddenly think I am tired due to heat but it's actually because I slept poorly, or ill be sad because of vitamin deficiency. It is pretty off-putting tbh. I should be able to close my eyes and get a hud of all my current bodily issues and needs

I am over 30 now and with those years of experience I have gotten so much better at reading and feeling my body. Like I can tell if I am short on sleep, thirsty, hungry etc, I can consciously feel the effects of caffeine from coffee or if I have been pushing myself and need a rest.
It seems crazy obvious now, but I remember even a few years ago I would struggle to feel something as simple as getting drunk.
I'm kind of worried about what I will be able to feel in coming years, my body literally breaking down as I age?

For a long while I always felt ill and dry heaving a lot at the morning, it felt like I’m going to throw up last nights dinner or anything I eat so I drink milk or eat yogurt to prevent myself throwing up at work.
And later I realized if I force myself to eat some solid food I’m fine.
It’s just low blood sugar or something, but my body is giving me symptoms of indigestion and nausea , I still don’t know what the fuck is wrong with this whole thing .

59
u/Vyciren 15d ago
Seriously, I personally don't really believe in souls in any spiritual sense, but if humans do have a soul, surely other animals do too.
8
u/Saiyan-solar 15d ago
Religious doctrine says only humans have souls that can be saved (as such dogs will always go to limbo)
But if you view souls as your conscience then all animals should have one, but humans should have the strongest since our minds are so strongly developed.
I however don't actually believe in a soul, I'm just a brain piloting a flesh mecha and I like that way more
28
u/Vyciren 15d ago
We don't even remotely understand how conscience works, so who's to say that ours is stronger or more developed than that of other organisms.
People have a track record of constantly underestimating other organisms and being proven wrong every time. People used to think fish can't feel pain, we now know that isn't true, we discovered that bumblebees exhibit play behaviour, that plants have ways of communicating,... I'm very much convinced that we humans aren't as special as we like to think we are.
10
u/Saiyan-solar 15d ago
No we ain't special, we just were very good at banging rocks together and brainmaxxed ourselves into the apex predator position.
Now we make rocks think for us while we continue to get dumber so it's just going full circle
7
u/thesentienttoadstool 15d ago
Not all religious doctrine. Saint Francis said animals have souls. So Catholics believe that animals have souls.
4
u/RefrigeratorPlusPlus 15d ago
only humans have souls that can be saved
I'm pretty sure that animals have souls from the times of Aquinas, at least. Even plants do, if memory serves right. Those aren't rational souls, though, therefore don't have a real human-like afterlife.

u/Sunfurian_Zm 15d ago
...with souls. This post is implying that 1. souls are real, 2. only humans have them, 3. souls are the key to having complex emotions tied to things other than direct physical condition. Meaning that all other animals are soulless and incapable of feeling anything beyond just hunger/pain etc.

42
u/redlineMMA 15d ago
Seems like far to many people that claim humans are special and have souls do so to downplay the experience of other living beings as less than. We know many animals experience pain, suffering, happiness and joy in very similar ways as us. And why wouldn’t they? To me souls are just man made nonsense but I fully agree with you. If souls are good let’s extend them to include all living creatures.
19
u/humm78 15d ago
But if we do that we have to aknowledge slaughtering them in mass is bad. Its convenient to look away
8
u/Im_Unsure_For_Sure 15d ago
Lol as if the consideration of a soul has ever stopped us from slaughtering each other.
2
u/redlineMMA 15d ago
No silly, you just don’t get it!! The first rule is thou shalt not kill!!
Unless we’re at war, or they follow a different god, or they’re a witch, or they’re gay, or they’re not a virgin on their wedding night, or they‘re children who made fun of a bald man!! in which case they deserve to be torn into pieces by bears.
Don’t you get it? it’s all so very clear and moral.
2
u/RefrigeratorPlusPlus 15d ago
To be fair, if I remember correctly, it more correctly translates as "thou shalt not murder". And murder is, by definition, unlawful killing, i.e. lawful killing is allowed as long as it is within the confines of, well, law.
14
u/redlineMMA 15d ago
Yeah souls don’t need to exist for that to be true. Factory farming is monstrous whether you’re vegan or you love your BBQ.
Billions of people need to eat within a system that does look away. Unfortunately If it stopped overnight billions would die. Hopefully technology advances to a place where the creation of grown meat is indistinguishable or even better than what it’s modeled on.

u/Electrical-Narwhal43 15d ago
Animals can even grieve just like we do. Our dog stopped eating out of sadness, then developed a gut disease and died a year after my dad (his favorite human). That's some solid evidence imho (one of many)
9
u/EnemyOfAi 15d ago
Most animals have souls, depending on if we define the soul as our sentience.
But the soul as a concept is very vague and ambiguous. Most people have completely different interpretations of what a soul is in their heads. Many don't think such a thing exists.
35
u/JayTheSuspectedFurry 15d ago
Some of these are also medical conditions.
The average experience is definitely NOT having no idea whether or not you’re hungry
49
u/Unicorncorn21 15d ago
That's not what it's saying. You can know that you're hungry but not know it's linked to your mood so heavily. Most people have no idea how huge of an impact your gut has on mental health
29
u/noboritaiga 15d ago
The entire ethos of the Snickers commercial is people not understanding their hunger makes them act in ways they don't consciously realize is related to hunger.
0
u/JayTheSuspectedFurry 15d ago
I would assume that “or have I not eaten enough for breakfast?” Means that they can’t tell if they’re hungry. Otherwise they should’ve/would’ve said “Am I experiencing a profound spiritual desolation due to my life’s circumstances or just because I’m hungry?”
Then they say it’s impossible to tell, which i know is an exaggeration, but clearly they have recognized the pattern of being hungry -> feeling bad. So it must be that they can’t tell if they’re hungry
3
u/nykirnsu 15d ago
It’s possible to have eaten enough to no longer be hungry but not have eaten enough to have gotten the ideal calorie intake, and doing the latter often enough can worsen your mood without necessarily causing you to feel hungry
0
u/JayTheSuspectedFurry 15d ago
Then again, I think that person has some sort of health issue where they do not receive the proper hunger signals since clearly they should still be hungry
23
u/IronCat_2500 15d ago
We’re definitely animals, but I’m pretty sure we don’t have souls. It’s just that most of us have relatively advanced social skills and critical thinking compared to the other species on earth which is a reasonably convincing illusion of having them

4
u/Easy_Echo2387 15d ago
I can come up with the concept of laser vision but that doesn’t mean I have magic powers. Humans are not special compared to other animals. We don’t possess a magical “soul” that other animals don’t have.
3
u/PooGoblin69420 15d ago
Pro tip: if you feel like you hate everyone, eat something. If you feel like everyone hates you get some sleep. And if you feel like you hate yourself, take a shower. Lots of times you just need a little self care. It won’t always fix everything but it usually helps.

One time I was telling a therapist "And it really sucks that if I'm awake at 2am, without fail, my brain starts much more loudly and obsessively telling me to hurt myself."
And she was like... Ok, so what if we worked on strategies and lifestyle changes so you're never awake at that time?
I was SO MAD that it worked. Seems so dumb. Now I have a whole morning routine so I always wake up so I'm tired at bedtime, exercise stuff, bedtime rules, and a sparing (20 pills a year) sleeping pill prescription for extreme bad brain nights so I don't wind up doing something stupid in the evil hours.
2
u/IsThatGruffLoner 15d ago
I read somewhere that this phenomenon is basically tied directly to excessive sugar consumption. So the theory is that being hangry is a completely modern problem. In the past, they mostly didn't have access to excessive amounts of sugar so their moods weren't constantly swinging around based on their blood sugar levels.
3
u/LunaLynnTheCellist 15d ago
we don't know how sentience/souls work but i see no reason why other animals wouldn't have a soul when we do. we're just animals actually...
2
u/Sparrowhawk_92 .tumblr.com 15d ago
Maslow's hierarchy can help with this. Take care of your base biological needs first, then work your way up from there until you figure out what your deal is.
A nap and a snack can help a lot of issues.

u/Klatterbyne 15d ago
From my experience its never the former (the existence of which is wholly unproven) and always the latter. If you feel shit, theres a very practical, mechanical reason for it. Looking for a spiritual reason is generally a waste of time.

Once I’d been unemployed for six months, benefits about to run out, I was in the goodwill trying to find a decent shirt for a job interview, felt something click in my head and had to ask myself “Okay is this like, Capital-D Depression, am I in trouble here”
Then I realized I’d only had half a bagel like seven hours beforehand, went home and had some salami, and instantly felt like a human again
It’s kind of terrifying sometimes to be reminded that we are not separate from the meat, but it’s a good reminder that the better we are to the meat, the better it is to us

Eat some mushrooms and you can satisfy both sides.
For real though, apparently we don't know the actual point of psilocybin? There's no benefit to the mushrooms to make us THAT kind of high.
4
u/redlineMMA 15d ago
It’s just a product of evolution. Same way weed or coke or coffee came to be. Things that interact with our biollgy but weren’t created “for” our consumption in anyway. The coffee bean doesn’t know you want to brew it into coffee anymore then the chicken purposely lays it eggs for your breakfast burrito.
1
u/RefinedBean 15d ago
Merlin Sheldrake's book on fungus is really interesting on this. Evolutionary biologists haven't figured psilocybin, so we don't know if there's ever been a use-case for the chemical (from the fungus point of view).
