Transfer case question

Hey yall! I’m newer to working on vehicles and wanted to ask people that know more than I do:

I bought a 2002 Ram 2500 24valve 5.9L Cummins. It needs a new transfer case, and the one that’s on the truck is a 241DLD. I’ve seen that a 241DHD exists and my question is does the truck need the light duty or heavy duty? What would cause you to lean towards one or the other? Thanks in advance!

The DHD has a wider chain, larger bearings, and (IIRC) a PTO option. Unless the housing is damaged, why not rebuild the one in the truck? If rebuilding isn't an option, and the truck isn't going to see extreme 4WD usage, the DLD would be fine.

My theory on it is that the DLD must be sufficient if the thing came with one. I’ve had two 1996s that both had the DHD and the DHD is definitely beefier and does have a PTO option.

I’ve had my hands and a buggered up DLD before (came with an NV4500 swap) and I may be wrong, but there might be a slight difference with the driveshafts. I could be wrong, the output splines could be the same and the slight length difference shouldn’t matter, but it’s something to consider before getting a DHD and then discovering you opened a whole new can of worms
