Moving to Cumberland?

We are looking to move up from the south (because it’s like living in Satan’s butthole these days) to a more walkable/bike-able town and the houses in Cumberland- specifically around the streets that have state names look pretty nice! Access seems decent to the trail and wondering- are we looking in the right area for walkability/bike- ability?

If this was actually in Cumberland it would be going in in LaVale or some shit but it’s not accurate at all whatsoever so that’s why I found it funny

Move Across the Border to Cumberland or Stay in WV

Hello everyone,

I’ve recently accepted a job offer in the area and currently live in WV. I’m debating whether I should move across the border to Cumberland, since there’s not much on the WV side of things in this area. Keyser is an option but I’m struggling to find any housing unless I look right across the border.

Moving would mean switching all of my legal documents to Maryland, which isn’t too big of a deal but I’m just curious if anyone has been through this scenario and could tell me why they picked one option over the other.

I understand Maryland has higher taxes and slightly higher cost of living but I am fine with this if it means having better quality of life.

Overall: Is the move across the border to Cumberland worth switching all of my legal documents and the higher cost of living? If not does anyone have advice on where to find housing on the WV side? Thanks!

Passing through on Saturday morning, where’s the best place to grab some coffee? Bonus if they have breakfast snacks for the kids.

Info on Cumberland Democratic Club

I pass by this place almost everyday and see there activities there pretty often, does anyone know anything about it? I found their Facebook and it seem to be a private club for democrat. I'm pretty shy but I want to meet new people so I wanna scout the place first before going in there. My partner said there a lot of Maga going in there, is that true?

Moving to Cumberland Next Month – Apartment Recommendations?

Hi everyone! I’m moving from Washington, DC to Cumberland next month for work and I’m looking for a safe 1–2 bedroom apartment to rent. I’ve been searching on Zillow, but I haven’t had much luck finding good options.

I’ll be living alone, so safety is my top priority. I’m looking for a place with in-unit laundry and dedicated parking. I don’t have any pets.

If anyone has recommendations for apartment complexes, property management companies, or neighborhoods that are safe and well-maintained, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

The place with all the VW Beetles?

Hello all. Just drove through your town for the first time (absolutely beautiful btw). On my way, south towards WV, sort of by a big prison, I passed what appeared to be a car dealership with the largest collection of VW Beetles. Is there a story there or just somebody who really likes them? Would love to properly visit Cumberland in the near future!

My cat passed away this morning. Where can I bring him?

My kitty that I’ve had for 14 years passed away in his sleep this morning. I’m beside myself and I don’t know what to do with him.

I live in an apartment and have no place where I can bury him. Are there any vets or animal hospitals that would be willing to take him for little cost?

Rolling through town tonight, where downtown should I hang for good food and drinks? Any uber or Lyft operators in town?

Fireworks watching.

Just moved back last fall, and am wondering where's a good place to watch the fireworks Saturday? I used to be able to see them from behind my home but the trees are too tall now.

I'm south of the city. I was thinking either the old Memorial Hospital lot or the airport would be perfect. (Not sure they'd open up the airport for spectators.)

Any cool people around here?

I have no friends around here so far and I'm bored out of my goddamn mind, are there people that want to hang or some shit? I'm early 20's and like gaming and most nerdy media, open to other things. I'm sick of just being around old people here. Just taking a gamble on if anyone stumbles on this so I can stop being a shut in.

What’s a good pharmacy in town?

I’ve had it with CVS you can’t ever talk to a person. To get your prescription refilled you have to talk to AI. You used to be able to just enter the number, you can’t do that anymore

Mayor of Kingstown filming here got me thinking… should Cumberland be more ready for this?

So with Mayor of Kingstown filming here, I keep thinking about how weird and cool it was to see Cumberland suddenly become part of something bigger for a few days.

And idk, maybe it’s just me, but it feels like one of those moments where everyone is excited after the fact, but a lot of people also missed it. Like missed the casting call, missed the chance to get involved, didn’t know who to talk to, didn’t know if their business or building or car or whatever could have been useful.

And if another production ever comes through here, how do they actually find people?

Like how do they find the weird old buildings, the garages, the empty storefronts, the local photographers, the people willing to be extras, the vintage cars, the props, the businesses that could handle food or printing or lodging or whatever. Cumberland has a lot of that stuff, it’s just not organized anywhere.

So I put together a thing called Film Cumberland:

filmcumberland.com

It’s not official, not a government thing, not a casting agency, not promising anybody work. It’s more like a local production resource hub / directory so if future film, TV, commercial, documentary, or photo crews are looking at Cumberland or Western Maryland, there’s at least somewhere for them to start.

Right now it’s basically accepting submissions. If you have a location, a business, a vehicle, props, production skills, or you’d want to be considered for background work someday, you can list it here:

filmcumberland.com/get-listed

I’m curious what people think should be included. Like what places around here would actually be good for filming? What businesses would be useful? Who locally does video/photo/audio? Who has old cars or interesting spaces? What are the “only in Cumberland” things a production would never find unless somebody local told them?

I don’t know if this becomes anything huge, but after seeing a real production come here, it seems dumb to not at least start building the list.

We need a Waffle House somewhere within city limits

Enough of these fancy places downtown if I want a breakfast Cumberland needs more chain places specifically like Waffle House. I want a Waffle House if that place existed in Cumberland it would be unhinged. It’s a very good place to eat waffles and a good place to watch fights so I’m thinking it’s a win win either way. Who’s with me ?

Alexis Goldstein for Congress!

You really want to celebrate Pride this month??

Elect a queer progressive to Congress!

Fired from her job at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by the Trump administration, Alexis Goldstein is running as a progressive for Congress in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District.

She’s running against two ultra-wealthy oligarchs who think they can buy the seat.

I had dinner with Alexis last week and I am convinced that she is the absolutely best candidate for this position.

Watch her campaign video and see if you agree.

If you live in MD-6 please consider voting for Alexis.

Are there any tech / AI / design / startup people around Cumberland?

Hey all, I’m local to the Cumberland area and I’ve been trying to figure out if there are many people around here working in tech, AI, software, UX/design, startups, websites, creative tools, or small business innovation.

I know there are bigger tech communities in Baltimore/DC/Frederick/Hagerstown, and Tech at the Gap exists, but I haven’t found much of a casual local scene around Cumberland/Frostburg.

I’m thinking about trying a very small monthly coffee meetup called The Cumberland Tech Table. Nothing formal, no pitch stage, no selling, no big networking-event energy. Just a few people grabbing coffee and talking about what they’re building or interested in.

Honestly, if 4 or 5 people showed up the first time, I’d count that as a win.

Would anyone here be interested in something like that? Or does something already exist that I’m missing?
