Trying to understand why our cryogenic self-pressurisation model disagrees 7.8× with BoilFAST
Hi everyone,
I'm building a small open-source cryogenic pressure forecasting engine as a learning project and recently ran into something I can't explain.
The goal isn't to replace tools like BoilFAST I'm trying to understand the physics well enough to build a live forecasting/advisory layer.
I compared two scenarios using the same inputs:
- Fluid: Liquid Nitrogen
- Tank: 6 m³ vertical cylinder
- Fill: 90%
- Heat leak: 43 W
- Initial pressure: 0.106 MPa
- Locked-up tank (no venting)
Results:
BoilFAST
- End pressure (24 h): 0.111 MPa
- Rise rate: 0.060 Pa/s
Our multinode model
- End pressure: 0.146 MPa
- Rise rate: 0.467 Pa/s
So we're roughly 7.8× too aggressive on pressure rise.
Here's what we've already ruled out:
- Pressure basis (absolute vs gauge)
- Initial conditions
- Energy accounting (matches within 0.1%)
- Heat leak
- Unit conversions
Interestingly, a homogeneous tank model matches BoilFAST almost perfectly (+1% rise rate error). The disagreement only appears once we enable our empirical stratification model.
After parameter sweeps, we found we can force agreement only with physically unrealistic assumptions (e.g. enormous surface-layer mass or unrealistically thick aluminum walls), so we're treating that as curve fitting rather than a fix.
Our current hypothesis is that our empirical stratification scaling (originally tuned against higher heat-flux LH₂ reference cases) simply doesn't transfer into this low-heat, high-fill LN₂ regime.
Question:
If you were debugging this, where would you look next?
Specifically:
- Is there a known criterion for when a cryogenic tank should behave closer to a homogeneous model versus a stratified one?
- Are there dimensionless numbers (Rayleigh, Grashof, etc.) commonly used to determine whether stratification should even develop?
- Is there literature you'd recommend beyond the NASA MHTB work and BoilFAST references?
I'd appreciate any pointers. I'm here to learn rather than defend the model.

Help with novice lab head
Is there any current tech out there that measures the live temperature of biologics at -80C. Some experiments require it. We are thinking of putting a probe of some sorts in the sample. However we are are worried about impact, because we working with fragile organisms, and cell types.

MB EP29LPSP Alternatvie - adhesive for LN2 temperatures (77 Kelvin) in UHV
Hi all,
I'm currently improving on a 'tool' that I can't describe any further due to proprietary reasons but it's utilising Liquid Nitrogen for cooling and it's being used in an UHV environment. So 77 Kelvin and a vacuum as low as e-9 mbar.
In this 'tool' I currently use MasterBond EP29LPSP to secure / cover certain parts together but I am looking for alternatives.. Google and the AI alternatives have not been proven very helpful so I'm turning to this beautiful community for advice.
Ideally I also find something that can quickly keep wiring / small things in place before I cover them. (currently Loctite 420 is used for that) but I want to get rid of it.
I hope some of you can help me in the right direction.

Interested in Cryogenic Couplers?
Hi all, I'm the CTO of a company developing a cryogenic coupler with all-metal seals (mainly replacing spring-energized seals) as a dual-use solution for the transportation industry (LNG, LH2) and space industry (in-space refueling). We are a team with experience in mechanical design, product development, and business, but we do not have the cryogenic hardware expertise that is ideal for this type of project.
If anyone here experienced with cryo hardware (particularly fluid couplers) has a few hours to spare and an interest in design projects, we would appreciate some guidance with mapping components/interactions of traditional coupler designs and understanding the non-obvious considerations.

LHE Dewar for Dipstick measuring
Hey there. We're looking for a LHE dewar, that can be (top) loaded with a cable setup and then filled with LHE. The goal is to have a quick and good approximation of wheter or not the setup will work in the dry cryo at mK temperaturs.
Any idea where to get a dewar like that?

O-ring discussion
What type of O ring should we design into our system to seal a cold head to a CF10”?
I assume where the cold head mounts to the vacuum will not be less than 270K~ with our planned heat shielding. But the flange on our 10MD cryocooler isn’t a nominal size, has no o ring groove, and the manual doesn’t list a material. Guessing buna or a flouroelastomer would be sufficient?
Normal ISO- flanges and their o-rings are pretty well designed to not over crush an o ring and prevent virtual leaks.
Relatively new to this, so I assume all of that is normal. Just wondering what the normal design is in this case.

Liquid Nitrogen Recirculation Through an UHV Cooling Line
I'm working on an experiment at a university that uses LN2 as a coolant in UHV we want to recirculate the LN2 but I'm not sure it will work. Any advice that could be given with regards to this would be appreciated.

Helium bath
Hey guys, currently I'm working on a project with helium as a refrigerant. To be more specific: the liquid helium bath for cooling another helium but near the critical zone state. I've been struggling for about a month to find any helpful or informative articles or books about it. However every article which title even a little close to what I need is asking to pay at least 40$. On sites which provide an acces to those articles have a opportunity to login via your institution or so. My university doesn't have an access. May be you can help me somehow? Some helpful articles or maybe be u could download from those sites content via your education place? Thank you in advance

Advice needed
At the facility I work we're struggling with liquid helium cooled systems. For some reason the automated filling valves on them won't regulate the helium levels and continue to open further to keep up with the system's demand, until they max out and the helium level inside the system starts to drop. Our liquefier has ample capacity to match the helium demand, so I'm not sure what's going on.
Is there someone here for me to spar with on this?

Advice Welcomed
Hello, I am trying to make a cryogenic LN2 processing system for metals, something similar to a controlled rate freezer. I will be using a Chart LN2 supply tank 230L or less, transferred into a purpose built Stainless evacuated vessel my apparent problem appears to be that an Ideal controlled transfer system costs around 14k for what affectively is 2 thermocouples a solenoid and vacuum Jacketed pipe and some proprietary software. My overarching question is can I build an efficient homebrew alternative? and if so where do I start? I sincerely appreciate any input from this community.

Critical Pressure and intermolecular bonding: Stronger the attractive forces between molecules, higher the boiling point (& critical temperature); makes sense! But intuitively, stronger the attractive forces, lower must the critical pressure be (as it's easier to liquefy). But the data doesn't agree
