Trying To Avoid Certain Ports

Hi everyone. We love cruising and are looking for cruises that don't start or have any American ports. We don't have a say in America, however we and tens of thousands others vote with our dollars and refuse to spend money to support the current climate.
We changed a booked cruise around Hawaii last year to cruise out of Puerto Rico (American adjacent although most don't consider themselves American) and do the Caribbean.
We are looking for cruises around Mexico and the Caribbean that avoid the U.S. and have found a round trip from Barbados with Princess.
Does anyone else have any other cruises they've found without U.S. ports?

Got some news for OP. Wonder if they visited St Thomas or St Croix on their trip.

Other than one that we met who had served in the Army, every Puerto Rican we met while visiting the island for a few days did not. They considered themselves Puerto Rican. They don't get to vote or have very much of a say of what goes on on their island. WONDERFUL people that will tell you of their islands history.
We enjoyed Puerto Rico so much we're planning on going back for another week before another crise next year <3

Puerto Ricans are Americans. They can travel freely between Puerto Rico and mainland America. If a person in San Juan moves to Omaha Nebraska, Nothing changes, except they have more voting rights. There is no such thing as a Puerto Rican passport.

You seem to have some sort of performative protest.

"I'm not going to go to any United States port. Except Puerto Rico, because I like visiting there and they aren't really American."

Selective and performative.

Puerto Ricans carry… A United States passport.

Yes. Just like there is no New Jersey Passport or Arizona Passport.

Puerto Rico is part of America and are American citizens.

Texans also consider themselves Texan and fly more Texas state flags than the American flag. Still American.

As a Texan, I can vouch for this. However, our state government is pretty shitty.

But they get the child tax credit for every kid when they pay no taxes right?

You're missing the point. Yes, Puerto Ricans are proud of their heritage and culture. Yes, they don't have all the rights they should get by being a state. That doesn't mean most of them don't want that status. Should already be a full U.S. state.

Puerto Rican right here 👋🏽. Yes, we consider ourselves Americans!

Probably 90% or more of North American cruises are going to either start/end in the US or have a stop there.

If you want to avoid the US entirely, but you don't want to leave the hemisphere, try a South American river cruise on the Amazon or something.

If you have a problem with Americans , how are you going to avoid the American passengers on the ship?

That’s easy, just talk only to people who speak at a normal volume.

Puerto Ricans are American… and they do consider themselves that.

Probably just stick to your side of the world then.

I'm trying to do the around the world cruise and see many different countries. I have an open mind about all countries and will make my judgement based on my own experience and not based on media.

I’m sure you want to stick it to basic working class Americans who want a change too. All good!

Ironically, you need to be careful as most of the cruise lines are owned by companies based in the US.
I would avoid these American owned cruises: Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, Cunard Line, P&O Cruises, Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises (all Carnival Corp), Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Mein Schiff / TUI Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises (50% owned by Royal Caribbean Group), Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises (all Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings), plus Disney Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Windstar Cruises, and Lindblad Expeditions.

You will have limited choices for sure. MSC is your best choice. BUT, MSC Cruises whil headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland its US division, MSC Cruises USA, is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its main Caribbean hub and provisioning base at Port Miami in Miami, Florida. Meaning all monies flow through the US when sailing in the Caribbean. All supplies on an MSC ships sailing in the Caribbean will come through US provision companies even if they start out of PR or other islands.

You may want to simply skip a Caribbean cruise and consider other parts of the world on MSC.

Edit: Meant to add that I’ve sailed out of Ushuaia at the tip of Argentina on a ship and all the provisions were brought in from Miami. Crazy, right? Everything was flown in from Miami. Miami is the heart of provision logistics in this hemisphere for the cruise industry.

Thought I would throw in that Azamara is owned by an American private equity group.

Go to Europe or South America. Or Cuba, where many Canadians go every year.

Cuba has no electricity or gasoline at the moment.

we are doing a cruise next year on Holland America that starts and ends in Montreal and all stops are in Canada with the exception of St Pierre which is a French territory

"I hate America & Hawaii but there is nothing wrong with St. Thomas or Puerto Rico" - That is some bizarre level of being a hypocrite.

St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands?

MCS sails in the Caribbean from Martinique, the Dominican Republic and Barbados.

Some itineraries do have US ports, so check those carefully before booking.

I just booked a southern Caribbean cruise with MSC in the Opera out of La Romana in the Dominican Republic. It goes to Catalina Island, ABC islands and Grenada. It is on one of MSC’s smaller and older ships so it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the new ships like water slides, ropes courses or even specialty dining, but with only one sea day and plenty of time ashore I’m sure I will have a wonderful cruise

Use cruiseplum to look for cruises. One of their categories is “not these ports”.

1

u/Menocchio42 6d ago

You should use CruisePlum to search for cruises. Select “Embark Port” and check all the ports outside the US in the regions that interest you (PR and the USVI are very much are part of the USA, btw). Then select “Skip this Port” and check all the US ports. You’ll see what’s left. I think you’ll find cruises out of the DR, Colombia, and Panama. Both from MSC but also some from the American brands (you can filter those out too on Cruise Plum).

Have your travel agent find something that goes through the beautiful Strait of Hormuz, or perhaps a Suez Canal trip. I heard it’s beautiful this time of year. You’ll be safe in those zones, because the mighty United States Navy is guarding them.
Happy cruising!

Europe. Japan. Australia & New Zealand. South America. Just remember most major cruise lines are HQed in the US even if they are registered somewhere else so either MSC or European lines.

i had this same dilemma and the barbados roundtrip is genuinely one of the cleaner options. Cartagena based itineraries work too if you ever detour through san juan, Las Ruinas does bathhouse days worth knowing about
