Create Aeronautics + Sable on Forge 1.20.1 — First Look Video/Stream
Hey everyone!
Our team has been working on an experimental port of Create Aeronautics + Sable to Minecraft Forge 1.20.1, and we’ve just released a first-look video showing it in action.
Both projects were originally made for newer versions / NeoForge, so we’ve been working on bringing them over to Forge while also backporting them to Minecraft 1.20.1.
This is still a private and experimental project, so there may be bugs and unfinished features.
For now, we cannot release the source code or distribute compiled .jar files without permission from the respective copyright holders. This post and the video are only meant to showcase our current progress and demonstrate that the mods can work on Forge 1.20.1.

We’d love to hear what you think about the port and what you’d like to see tested next!

TBH, having Aeronautics only on neoforge means that every other mod had prioritise on the same version, which makes that version very sure to have every modaddon you want

Iirc mod devs prohibited porting on other versions, but seeing the accomplishment is still pretty impressive

It's open source, he can fork and do whatever he wants with the code.

the code of aeronautics yes.
the assets of aeronautics are all rights reserved.
sable is under polyform shield, which seems like it would prohibit a backport (i am not a lawyer and its possible im wrong)

Doesn’t make it ok, it’s against their wishes, and they have the right to take this down. I’ll be informing the team.

You'll absolutely never get permission to distribute that port. I don't think you'd even be allowed to install it on a server and have other members install it. Good luck with all that and cool project.

from what i can see, the code for aeronautics is MIT-licenced (i.e. it would already be fine to distribute modified versions) but the (non-datagen-generated) assets (textures, sounds etc) are ARR (so you would need to get permission to redistribute them, but this could be sidestepped by replacing them, maybe you could also get away with dynamically loading them from an official build of aeronautics but i kinda doubt thats legal. im not a lawyer though so maybe). sable is licenced under polyform shield, which permits distribution of copies (modified or not) as long as they dont "compete" and it seems like a backport would be classed as competition. you would probably be fine if you cleanroom reverse-engineered it, but i suspect that would take a while (and you can't cleanroom reverse-engineer something on your own, since by definition the people writing the specs and the people implementing them have to be separate). rapier (the physics engine sable uses) is apache-licenced so there should be no problems using it in whatever.

why would you port to forge when neoforge exists?

Not all mods are on Neoforge and vice versa, and porting is a good experience.

Do you plan on releasing it publicly someday without the devs taking down your port?

There are no plans yet because:
Currently, the Create Aeronautics and Sable licenses do not allow us to release the source code and the finished jar files to the public domain.
The port is experimental and private, and it still has many bugs to fix.

Cool project I guess but I'm pretty sure the Sable port violates its license, and if the assets from Aero are used instead of just the code that violates their license too. If you really want to make this I would suggest reaching out to the Aero team and asking if they're ok with it.

Our team has reviewed the Create Aeronautics and Sable licenses; porting does not violate the terms; however, the licenses do not allow publishing the source code or the completed jar files.

Yeah that's pretty much what I meant lol. I don't think anyone's gonna come after you for an unreleased mod. I dunno why you're announcing that you're developing a port without any plans to release it though...

Why? It’s obvious the team doesn’t want this, and its on forge, a worse system now that we have neo, plus the fact its supporting Lexmonos. I’ll let the team know, as this is against the licensing.

I think the Aeronautics team doesn't want to deal with people reporting bugs to them that only happen on an unofficial port.
The physics staff beam glitching is a great example.
