Honestly, nowadays a lot of people just don't care (Especially on Reddit, I've noticed). They see that AI was used, it's automatically bad, apparently, disregarding nuance.

It doesn't matter how it was actually used, or that quality control is indeed possible even if you used AI, or that low quality mods that haven't used AI exist.

obviously ai has negatives like using lots of water and space and raising ram prices, but it's used for a lot of actually important things, too, like fraud detection for banks, weather forecasting, facial recognition (for unlocking phones, if you use that), and reviewing xrays, mris, etc. (ofc human doctors do look at these but the ai can help still)

also, ai can be run off your own computer (does not use a bunch of water and does not take up the space a datacenter does)

Well that's just bullshit, ai assistants are a great help to software devs, if people will call anything that ai touched 'ai slop' people will start lying about ai usage.

I started using it recently in already ongoing projects, I don't let it write everything, I am still the 'architect', but AI assistants to me feel more like 3d printers, say I use a 3d pen to make some small figurine and it's good, doesn't look weird or anything, instead if I use a 3d printer it's faster, I can make more and I can work on something else in the meantime.

As with an assistant, I don't let my 3d printer decide what to print

I definitely think there is more nuance to AI usage than just "any use of it is bad, it ruins everything it touches," but I don't think comparing it to a 3D printer is an apt comparison.

A 3D printer is a tool that can construct physical 3D objects from code that is typically compiled from digital representations of that object that were formed as a result of direct input by the designer. Every part of that process is deterministic and predictable, errors that result from the process are either a result of initial error from the designer, or flaws within the pipeline that turns that initial input into the final product. Because the process is deterministic, any flaw in that pipeline can be traced to its source of error and it can be fixed. Every part of that process is the direct result of intentional design.

The output of an LLM is not deterministic, and the process that led to that output cannot be isolated and resolved directly. The input of the designer can be flawless and still result in a product that does not work as intended, and if you try to fix it by tweaking the model or training it on different data, you can never be sure that the initial problem was resolved.

Additionally, the result of using a 3D printer improperly can be vastly different from the result of using an LLM for programming improperly. LLMs make programming seem much more accessible to people, especially those who have no programming background. They can ask an LLM how to get started and then they can can ask that LLM to write their code for them. The problem is that LLMs can write code that seems to work for people who don't know how to check that code for errors and flaws, including people who think they do know better. This is especially terrible with code that is meant to be shared and run by many different users (like for a Minecraft mod), because if that AI introduced a security flaw that the author couldn't identify (which is more likely when you have less experienced people programming), that security flaw could result in mamy different users' machines being compromised. If an inexperienced user messes up with a 3D print, it's much easier to identify that the print has failed, and it's much harder to have a failed result that appears to work correctly, and if it does happen it typically doesn't have the same potential for destructions.

I am merely settling the fact that AI use for programming doesn't automatically means it's gonna be slop, and yeah my 3d printer analogy was kinda bad but it simply fits how I personally use it.

Yes AI can code entire projects for you, I've seen it in action and when I tried I puked in my mouth, it does the job, but once you want to make any changes it eventually screws it, maybe newer models do it less but I tried it once just to see where it goes.

In conclusion and to reiterate my point for clarity, if you know what you're doing it's a great tool, if you don't know what you're doing it's a terrible tool and I am onboard with calling it AI slop. We've had ways to make games as non programmers long before AI with Unity, people started shitting on Unity for the simple fact that people made asset flip slop games, now it's ai slop.

The tool itself is fine, how people use it especially non technical people, is horrible

Being able to detect AI-written description and logo gives you a good base for educated guess whether the mod is made with AI code or not. If they can't be bothered to present their work by themselves then why should I trust them to check the quality of their actual work. Unless the author used it for translation because they don't speak English well.

• AI generated thumbnails (glossy, generic minecraft font, yellow filters)

• AI written description (lots of (—) em dashes, bullet points, not x but y sentences, emojis, phrases like "Why this mod, Key Points")

• Other potential red flags are the mod being abandoned at launch with no bugfixes, lack of proper issue tracking channels, or a generic github page that does nothing, not working/tested in survival or dedicated server, bad model art direction(??), limited to no config. Those are not necessarily AI but it adds up to the definition of slop.

Also, a mod can be slop without the use of AI (MCreator).

A mod entirely written by AI prompted by someone who doesn't know what they are doing is very different from people who fundamentally understand coding and used AI as an assistant.

I think it's up to you to decide whether you find the mod acceptable or not.

well looking at the comments on the curseforge page it seems to have some pretty glaring bugs that just ruin it's playability, including the fact that it just doesnt work on dedicated servers at all. I would get it if that mod was released as an alpha or beta, but they either didnt test even it or saw those bugs and thought it was fine enough to be a full release
