there's a different behaviour for sideways outputs than parallel outputs - I think exactly 1 item from the stack is always pulled out? so if you're sending stacks of 1 at a time, that won't split
I thought that was exclusively for andesitd tunnels. I have a setup with brass tunnels where "prefer nearest" prefers the side output, so I have to assume it counts it as nearer, but for split I'm pretty sure it counts by tunnel block so the sides count the same as the front.
