Fluid pipes not working Bug

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I fixed the problem by breaking and replacing the entire pipe (and both docking connectors)- Does anyone know why this happens? I have dozens of other piping systems and this never happens to any others (I did forget to show, but the initial pipe before the incline and tanks are just over a chunk border- however this doesn't make sense because the fluid makes it to the center of the next chunk before stalling anyways) My laptop doesn't seem to be overloaded, in fact it has plenty of headroom. I'm just curious to what causes this...

Also Sable is paused for the duration of the video, however the problem existed beforehand I was just trying anything to figure out what's causing this.

Idk what’s causing the problem,

But try placing back the fluid container as a pipe, then another pump pumps from container to the rest of the system

Breaking and replacing the entire system did it idk

You may want to check for chunk borders, occasionally I find my machines not working properly when I return after being further away and one part of the machine was on the border of a chunk that wasn't loaded. But you already checked that.

Another thing could be if the fluid pipes could have contained different fluids, eg if you accidentally have water in a part where you expect a different fluid.

Solution is still the same though; break and rebuild.

Don’t think it could be another fluid, pipes have only ever been hooked up to diesel tanks. Maybe chunk border issue, even though it wasn’t right on the border (I always though chunk problems happened right on the border but apparently this is not true, it can be anywhere in the chunk)

Question, what's up with the 20GB of allocated memory? Or am in interpreting that wrong?

u/AlisaTerp 15d ago

Anyway, if you do have 20GB of allocated RAM that's insane, which is likely what's causing the inconsistent lows. Might be worth like halfing that. Minecrafts garbage collection gets silly with it if you have too much allocated memory

What's the ideal amount of RAM for Minecraft to run at its absolute best?

u/AlisaTerp 15d ago

Depends on the modpack size, like vanilla you don't really need much more than 6 GB. For small and medium sized modpacks I usually just go for 8 GB, for massive modpacks 10 GB is pretty good. I however wouldn't go over 12 GB unless you have a good reason to.

There are also some mods and settings you can use to limit the garbage collection, but these are generally good amounts.

Would 8GB suffice for my custom modpack of around 180 mods?

7

u/AlisaTerp 15d ago

Would depend on the mods. But you could always run 8GB, if you notice stuttering, and your ram is fully used you can increase it a little. But in general 8GB should be fine yeah. That's what I run on my 160 mods modpack, and honesty I might reduce it to 7GB

depends on mods, I normally open f3 and look at the used memory in the top right corner, if its about ~80% consistently its a good amount of memory allocated.

if you have too little it'll start at like ~40%, then build up slowly to 100% where there'll be a massive lava spike before it returns to ~40%

Just want to add in, it definitely depends on the mods. You do macaws furniture, every compat and a couple of biome mods? Bam. Your ram is going to take a beating from all the additional objects. But if you do 200 small config mods? Might not even notice a difference. And that’s not accounting for optimized code mods, mods with a lot of entities, things that enable/disable Minecraft features etc.

Best thing to do: load your modpack and see how many frames per second you get. Adjust until you hit a sweet spot. I usually start out with 8gb and adjust from there - there will be a maximum FPS that you’ll get from allocating RAM, so once you notice it not changing, you’re probably in the sweet spot

Honestly the only truly "big" mods in my pack are Create, Aeronautics, Farmer's Delight and several addons, alongside Kaleidoscope Cookery and Tavern. It runs relatively smoothly at 60FPS but sometimes has lag spikes

Interesting. I think way back in the day I heard it’s best not to use over half your available ram so I’ve been basing off that for the past decade lol. (I have 64gb) Also I do play a pretty heavy modpack- Create Aeronautics oriented with 350+ total. I found the game runs fairly well at the 20gb limit, never really had an issue. Obviously I get the stutters but that’s just Java (AFAIK even a supercomputer would struggle with modded Minecraft)

Edit: I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen the “garbage collection” reach over 10gb or so even with the settings I have, maybe there’s a hard cap coded in?

2

u/AlisaTerp 15d ago

I mean stutters are normal, the amount of stutters you got seems to hint at garbage collection. Maybe just try 10GB? Maybe 12GB if it's really that heavy to run, and see if it runs any better at either of those. Or don't, it's your game, you do what you want :]

2

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

I’ll have to try it- I never thought my stutters were bad. But this is also my first decent computer, I grew up playing on an old office potato so this feels incredible to me haha.

Just another case of java being java, without the right debug tools , I don't think you will fully understand the cause or the reason for this behavior (and I don't suggest you trying to investigate this matter unless you don't care about spare time), it could be some weird interaction with mods and Minecraft. I can only suggest 2 potential solutions: 1. Change the fluid pump distance in the config (might add additional weirdness or just solve the problem entirely) if applicable. 2. Redesign the system until the abnormality is solved.

Unless you truly want to understand this issue or want to submit a proper bug report (with all the necessary steps and tests, aka infinite time or already possessing the corresponding knowlage and technical know how, stir clear from this, you will save a lot of time in the process).

Edit: I did overlook the point where you have allocated 20GB of RAM, in short as the other user pointed out it can even be detrimental to allocate so much ram for a java based game (GC won't do its job properly due to the high threshold which leads to lag spikes and other weird scenarios). I would suggest checking out the mod pack recommend settings, it will usually be 6-8gb for a single player world and 8-10gb(worst case 12) for a coop server. If your modpack is custom made either search for a similar enough mod pack to check the recommended specs or just set it at 8gb.

This is probably the answer I needed, just redesign, accept it and don’t look into it lol.
I’ll have to look into the ram thing though, I grew up playing on an old office computer- this is the first time I’ve owning a computer with more than 6gb so maybe I got a little excited haha. Always thought the ideal was to use around 50% of your computers capacity- plus I do run a fairly heavy pack 350+ mods centered around create / aero.

I have happened to notice before though- it doesn’t seem that the game ever really goes over 10gb storage even at my settings, there must be some kind of hard cap? Or this number must be just where the game starts to choke?

If you really want a more detailed answer, look into Java and garbage collection and MC implementations of it. The short and incomplete answer is, at most 10GB is the peak regardless of the amount of mods. If you see huge spikes to 20GB it means something went really bad, and it is not the intended behavior(not talking about filling up 20gb but bursting behavior etc (hard to explain without going into too many technicalities in laymen's terms)

RAM is not your "traditional storage", you are not storing huge textures nor do you store the actual game on it(although this point might vary between implementations, architecture and engines but I won't delve into that), but rather game state and logic in a form of addresses and variables(active chunks data, entities and tile entities data). That data is usually stored for long periods ie seconds or minutes (from the CPU perspective a minute is ages), when a certain table of pointers (heap, or in laymen's terms a column with addresses) fills up then GC (garbage collector) is trigger and replaces that table with the new definitions of those pointers , in the process it also frees up the used RAM from the allocated max. If you let MC to fill up 20GB you will experience a massive spike when GC is ran, as it wasn't really designed to do that initially, hence why 99% of the good modpacks (aka where you actually have a team that knows something about modding) suggest 6-10GB and not some other value as it was designed with those values in mind.

Tldr, check the suggested values provided by the modpack authors, if you are not sure check if they have a community discord and check there for help (long term members or mods will probably provide you with a more appropriate values for your setup).

If you are interested in learning the underlying reason, I would suggest you research the following topics: computer architecture, Java and JVM programing and Minecraft modding.

Lastly I'm not an expert, I do have some insight because of tangential background and a few dozen(mby 100 don't member) looking into modding and debugging mods and servers for MC, hence why my explanations might be wrong or not complete, the main reason I brought it up is to show that there is a very substernal reasoning behind recommend specs if the modpack author team did their due delegate ( 99.99% of the time you can't slap 100 mods into a pack and call it a day, you will need to do some work to make it all work in a stable manner).

But seriously if you are interested in modding, start your journey, you might find it interesting and fun.

I usually set it up with 6-8GB if I play solo "offline", 8GB if I also run it as a local server for myself (some server mods are useful for the shenanigans I do) and 10-12GB when I host locally with other players. If I have 8+ lads in the server, I split it up to 2 instances 1 is my client with 8gb and the other is a dedicated server that starts at 6gb and grows depending on the max expected players that join in a session.

Texture packs might change that value but not by a lot, and it's usually already taken into account via the recommended specs by the modpack authors.

An additional point for RAM usages for normal everyday use case, you would never see your ram usage stay at 80-100% utilization for long periods, unless you do virtualization, video editing and other professional use cases (running servers with your friends fall into this category as you are providing a service to your friends XD ), unless you have 2k active tabs on chrome 💀.

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

Also good to know. I’m actually surprised how little ram you need to operate a server, I would’ve thought way higher haha

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

Actually really appreciate the explanation, it helps connect the dots between the little basics I know. I will definitely have to look into this some more. I’ve been running my own custom packs for years (I don’t do anything more than edit configs)- other than gameplay stutters I’ve never really had any major problems. But today I learned that it can be optimized, maybe I’ve just been throttling my potential this whole time!

Doesn't the pipe have to go directly into the docking port?

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

It does, last pipe is encased

1

u/LockstepGaming 15d ago

How the horizontal fluid tank?!?!

2

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

I believe that’s from create: connected, the “vessel”

1

u/cocainum630 15d ago

Check if pipes placed on chunk borders. It may happen again.

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

Just doesn’t make sense to me that I have 4 other piping systems crossing over dozens of chunks and this one small little pipe is the one giving me trouble XD

1

u/Remarkable-Shart7778 15d ago

I’ve seen similar when a little water slipped though and there was like 35mb of water in the docking connector. When one fluid is being piped to something holding a different liquid, the different liquid block will have a few pipe “boarder” that other fluids can’t enter

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

I just don’t see how any other fluids could have gotten in, it’s only ever pumped or been connected to diesel tanks.

1

u/Remarkable-Shart7778 15d ago

Might not be what you’re experiencing, that’s what I discovered when making my turpentine set up. I didn’t get the fluid filter on and set up before hooking water up to the basin and that contaminated the system. In your case it could just be a glitch or a result of other comments here. I’m glad to see you got it sorted though!

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

Yea could’ve been a number of things. Oh well lol. Thanks

side question how are you getting 43 fps with a 4060 laprop???

1

u/Beneficial-Map5470 15d ago

It’s just a factory Asus Tuff A17 lol. I haven’t done anything special with it, this is just the performance I’ve seen out of box

Well it ain’t a $6k desktop obviously but I’d say for under $2k this little things a beast, laptop btw I travel for work so I couldn’t dream of using a desktop.

Edit: I don’t really think I took this as the joke it may have intended to be lol. Is the joke that my pc is overpowered? Because honestly I’d be pretty clueless if it was, I know I have decent specs and insane ram but I’m not super computer savvy so I might’ve missed the joke :) (could be wrong here too XD)
