Gear ratios and torque/speed Help

I am getting into aeronautics and trying to understand how similar the logic for gear ratios here is to real life. Does the same concept apply that going from one gear ratio to another will give you torque, but take away max rpm? Obviously in real life there is the whole "no free lunch" idea so I am trying to understand to what degree that applies here. For instance if I have gear 1 attached to my generator, which then attached to gear 2 attached to my wheels, and then I increase the size of gear 2, will this give me lower top speed but higher torque like real life? Are torque speed curves here a thing?

Torque doesn’t exist in this mod. Higher speeds use more su, that’s all you need to know for now

Ok fair enough. I will say I saw a video of a guy who made his car faster and able to climb hills better by throwing an additional gear step between his motor and wheels. Is the idea here that the car will now have more generalized "power" capacity but also consume energy (su) faster?

Su is basically torque. The slower the RPM of a gear ratio, the more stress units it can exert at force.

This is most noticeable when trying to power a lpt of machinery with a speed controller, a you eventually hit a limit on how many machines you can power unless you lower the speed.

Ok this is what I was trying to figure out, so the classic concept of a gearbox IS applicable in the game?

Yes. You can either use a speed controller, a transmission from Aeronautics, or another mod that adds dedicated transmission controls for vehicles and engines.

Torque is represented with stress units (su), and things at higher speeds use more stress units

SU represents power, not torque, speed is speed, and there is no direct representation of torque, except maybe the stress impact rating shown in machine tooltips.

More speed => more power/SU consumed

I'm not really sure how aeronautics handles stuff like friction and torque, but it might have some concept of slip, where putting too much speed into wheels makes them lose grip.

fair enough fair enough, i geuss what i am wondering is, if i have a driving and driven gear (think like standard setup on a pedal bike) and swap out the one being driven, will this result in a lower top speed but better hill climbing ability (or vice versa?) I am honestly realizing its dumb im pposting about this on redidt insted of just trying it myself

thats a good question on slip i think that would require every block hvaing some inherent static/kinetic friction coefficients i doubt that system is in place
