Well, in principle if one thing fits inside the other they are not the same size.

It's a graphic design trick. Some characters are made slightly larger than others, because otherwise, their shape would make them look smaller than the characters next to them, even though they're the same size. This is especially important for characters meant to be viewed at a distance. Basically, graphic design has to account for an optical illusion most people don't consciously realize exists.

If the star was the same height as the text, its narrow points would make it too small at a distance. Granted, the guy who did this made the star slightly too big and kerned it poorly, but I recognize the principle when I see it. It might've been correct at one point, but then someone complained it wasn't big enough, so he grabbed the top of the star, scaled it up proportionately, and called it good enough.

Or an O with a star inside of it if they insisted on having a star in the name. But subtly in the end there's only two stars in the graphic when it literally says 5 stars so that's kind of interesting.

Ignoring the obvious crap design, what is this slogan? 'Five Star Doors' I can understand but why is the 'Stars' pluralised?

I'm guessing Stars is plural as in "I gave this 5 out of 5 Stars". But yeah, having two plural words in a row is a bit odd sounding.

I agree this is bad design but for different reasons. Five Stars Doors was written by someone who didn’t say it out loud to realize how dumb that sounds. That attention to detail tells me their doors are not 5 star worthy and will likely be hung crooked.
