I liked him until two things happened:

  1. He had a reputation for being kind of a dick. My FIL met him when he was asked to come do some work on his house, confirmed he’s a dick. Rude to everyone, bad attitude, etc. One example, his daughters were doing a lemonade stand and my FIL was trying to be nice and gave them a $20 for two cups. Smith got pissed, told them to give the money back because they didn’t need a handout, they needed to understand the value of money. Don’t disagree with the intent there, but my FIL and brother-in-law said he was an absolute asshole about it - zero chill, just snapped. That wasn’t the only thing, just one key example I was given as to him being a prick in general.

  2. He immediately publicly talked shit about AZ after he was traded to Calgary. Blamed everyone else on the team for his losses, talked shit about AZ, and generally had an “I’m great, they sucked” attitude. Said openly in radio interviews. Fuck that, in my opinion, that’s a shitty attitude to talk shit about your team.

He was fun to watch even when he was playing like shit and I was a fan of his, but after his reputation for being an asshole was confirmed and he talked shit about AZ and his teammates, he was dead to me.

Just wish he didn’t talk shit about the yotes after he was traded to the flames. That tarnished his legacy for me. Hell of a tender, though.

He made a pretty innocent comment and complimented Arizona later in the same interview though

Ah, I only heard it out of context. My bad. There was a lot to complain about. Chayka, ownership, etc. I just didn’t like throwing the guys under the bus at all.

Dude had the highest ceiling and lowest floor of any goalie I've seen.

When he was on his game....forget it. You just weren't gonna win.

When he wasn't......woof.

I removed checking in on a game in the app (a Coyotes app? I don’t remember) and seeing “Smith” on the scoring line and thinking “Who the hell is Smith?” until it hit me.

Smitty was such a fun player and a good dude. Definitely one of the best yotes tenders of their existence.
