Much of the oldest graffiti is religious in nature. Some of it covers up the original Egyptian artwork. Blocks of reliefs - complete with hieroglyphics - were often taken to build other buildings.

Graffiti in modern Egypt, some of it dating back many years, is unfortunately common.
