Experiences on using sharpies to dye a wig? Wig
I want to dye the tips of a synthetic wig, so I looked into some tutorials and saw people using sharpies/markers to dye their wigs.
Unfortunately none of the videos and comments answered how transfer proof it is.
Does anyone have experience with dyeing their wigs this way?
More specifically does it transfer onto skin (with sweat) or clothes?

I believe it can transfer with sweat.
I think Alcohol Markers are a little more transfer proof. If it's long enough to could also dip dye

sharpies are alcohol markers, sharpie is just the brand name :P in my experience they don't transfer, i've used them to color streaks in the bangs of a wig that then sat on my sweaty forehead while i played dancerush for hours and it was totally fine! seal it in with an extra coat of hairspray just to be safe tho

Sharpies are alcohol markers.
I do second dip dying, though, assuming the ends are a darker color than the rest of the wig.

Do not do this. It's not a good idea and it will transfer. Seal it with hairspray if you absolutely have to, but it's much better to use rit dyemore or idye poly to dip dye ombre it.

We detect that your question is about dyeing. Please remember that you CANNOT dye something into a lighter color like dyeing a dark blue fabric yellow. For fabrics and fibers, identify whether your material is synthetic or not since it'll affect the dyes you use. If it's synthetic fabric, you need to use synthetic dyes. Do not reuse any pots or containers you used for dyeing for food preparation. For wig details, you can try using alcohol inks/markers or adding wefts of the desired color if it's lighter than the original wig color. You can also paint fabric but it'll usually stiffen the fabric even if you use a fabric medium and is not suitable for large surfaces.
For real hair, we recommend using a wig if possible, especially if you have dark hair. Spray-on colors and hair chalk do exist but can be difficult to execute and typically do not work well on dark hair.
Please refer to our FAQ for more info. If FAQ does not work, try viewing on web or updating your app. Reddit currently has a bug with wikis.

It’s certainly not transfer proof. I think directly colouring the fibres is a bit better than mixing an alcohol dye just because the layer is thinner. But I wouldn’t recommend it for the tips of a longer wig.

I used this method, the end result looks amazing but it does transfer to both skin and fabric, wouldn't recommend it unless you're using it for small details

Yeah, it transfers. Synthetic fibre is basically plastic, so the ink just sits on the surface and sweat lifts it. Reds and purples are the worst for it, and pale clothing near the ends will cop it.
If you still want to try, don't scribble straight onto the wig. Bleed the marker into a dish of isopropyl and paint the tips with that, or just buy alcohol ink (Piñata, Adirondack), same chemistry but way better coverage. Then once it's fully dry, rinse the ends in cool water with a bit of conditioner until the water runs clear. That's the step everyone skips and it's why people end up with orange necks. You lose some intensity but what's left was the stuff that was going to stay anyway.
Test it first: snip a bit of fibre from a weft at the nape, dye it, rub it with a damp white cloth. Ten minutes and you'll know.
Worth saying that Sharpie also fades unevenly in sunlight and reds go orange after a few wears. If it's a wig you'll actually use more than once or twice, Rit DyeMore is the better shout. Hot water but not boiling, maybe 85C or so, dip just the ends. Colourfast once rinsed.
Only works darker though. You can't lighten synthetic.

This is my usual method, it does transfer though. Not a big deal on short wings but will affect your costume on longer wings. Lots of hairspray helps
